This song was originally sung by a Superstar singer in Hong Kong named Leslie Cheung, who was a fantastic artist, with ultimate successful acting and singing career awarded countlessly. He was gay, perfectionist, heartwarming likeable nice guy in person, everyone loved him and he committed suicide on April Fool 2003. This song is about loving and being yourself bravely as everyone is unique and a treasure on this earth, along with emotions of gratitude, faith, melancholy and loneliness. HuaHua ‘s rendition of this song is touching hearts in hell and heaven. Speechless. Love it.

It's actually not a love story. The backstory of this song about the life of the original singer, Leslie Cheung. As one of the most influential singer/actor in China, he had had way too many outstanding performances for ppl to remember. Unfortunately, his life was a total disaster. He had a broken family ever since he was born, and the only person he could rely on were his boyfriend Deffy Tong and his best friend Anita Mui. However his sexuality was exposed and questioned by the Hong Kong media. Later on Leslie and Deffy broke up due to an unknown reason which leaded him into his depression. Thereafter he started to shift his focus onto acting and singing, but his work was not adapted by most audiences.On April 3rd, 2003, Leslie chose to end his suffering from depression and committed suicide. His friend Anita who also one-sidedly loved Leslie died in the same year from cervical cancer... To me the song does not only illustrate the love experience but also his urge of wanting people to understand him and his work more. I believe whenever people see this title they would think of something encouraging and stimulating. However, however in fact, it's a sad poem written by the greatest and also loneliest artist in China...

Its not about love story.

This song is a very touching song for all Chinese. It was written by Leslie Cheung, one of the most famous movie stars and singers in history. He was gay and he wrote this song to show his attitude, "I am who I am, I am the star which shines in my own way". He killed himself in 2004, the reason is still not clear.

The original version was sang by one of the most popular singer in late'80s HK China,name Leslie Cheung(past away in April 2003) Hua sing this song very often for remember this super star (used to sing in the competition and his concerts ).... Always remember Leslie and support Hua a very talent musician.

One of my favourite all time Hua's performance too! The essence of the song actually lies in the lyrics. The lyrics are exceptionally beautiful. This song was composed and sang by a renowned Chinese singer : Leslie Chung. Leslie was undoubtedly one of the most talented and popular artiste ever in the Chinese music scene. He is to the Chinese what Michael Jackson is to the West. Sadly he suffered from depression and jumped off from a hotel in Hong Kong in 2003. Hua sang this song to pay tribute to Leslie as it was a few days before his death anniversary. By the way Hua won the Best Song award for Singer 2018 for his song ‘Wukong' in Ep 4. Hua performed this song to commemorate the famous chinese pop singer Leslie Cheung who died on lst April 15 yrs ago. Leslie was depressed n committed suicide. Notice Hua wore a robe ? That was bcos he wanted to show his respect to Leslie who in his time also wore a robe to perform the song. . The song is also Hua's favourite . The lyrics about self esteem and believing in yourself no matter what others say about you resonates with Hua who has his fair share of detractors

I must admit when I first heard Hua Hua was going to sing this song years ago, I was slightly offended and afraid as I am a huge Gor Gor (Leslie Cheung) fan. I was afraid he would mangle the song and ruin my good impression of him. But I was wrong as he has always done the song and Gor Gor justice. I still can never hear this song without crying and missing Gor Gor but I would listen to Hua Hua even if it hurts

Cassie Nix I think Hua gave tremendous respect to Gor Gor through the entrance of this song, the robe, the long hair, the standing and mic-holding gesture when he sang, his hand inside the pocket etc., when he first sang “I’m what I’m”, my tears broken and My heart just hope Gor Gor can hear this, if he hear, he knew his spirit, his love and his music continues to influence singer worldwide, I was so touched by his heartfelt tribute but in a low profile but most thankful way of singing.

The author of this song is the idol of Hua chen yu.He jumped from a building in 2003 and committed suicide.At that time, he was a superstar in China and even in Asia.His name is Zhang Guorong.We all call him brother.We've always loved him.

This song was originally sung by Leslie Chang, a Hong Kong superstar, singer and actor, who decided to published that he was a gay and finally committed a suicide because of depression. Leslie composed this song himself. He performed this song on his concert, wearing a bathrobe. It is a song about himself, and he told people “I am what I am. Everyone is the honor to the Creator. I love myself!” This is such a meaningful song! Hua Chengyu must like this song very much, cause he sang this song at the end of every of his concerts. Not like other songs’ performance, Hua didn’t adapted this song, and he only used a piano as the accompaniment, also wearing a robe. It shows his respect to Leslie and this song.
