Ғылым және технология

The Vive, a powerful but unvarnished virtual reality headset from Valve and HTC, is a worthy competitor to the Oculus Rift.

    Crazy how much VR has evolved, i remember thinking it would take forever for there to be a headset like the quest 2. I still have my pre ordered htc vive.

    The Vive is going to compete with Oculus Rift once its polished? Wait, isnt that the other way around? Oculus Rift doesnt even have hand trackers for sale yet, while Vive have excellent tracking, and above all, a large volume for you to move around in, also much more solid and portable head tracking, a REAL software platform through Steam. How can the Rift even compete with this?

  • @corvexlovrok

    +blackmagic x For me the only thing I like about the Oculus is how light it is on your face......I've already preordered a Vive though lol

  • @noalarmsplease5872

    @noalarmsplease5872

    8 жыл бұрын

    +blackmagic x She was talking about the actual headset, not the experience you get with the headset. The rift is more comfortable and polished but less advanced. The Vive is more advanced but is less comfortable and polished. Also Oculus Home is more simple, intuitive and focused than Steam VR, which could be good or bad depending on your personal experience. It sounds like she is arguing that the Vive does have some advantages over the Rift, but these advantages will be negligible once the touch controls are released. But if you are someone who doesn't want to wait for room scale with motion controllers, Vive is your best option for now.

  • @erikm9768

    @erikm9768

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Jody Brennan I think we can agree that the Oculus is more ergonomic. For a polished experience, i dont know if I agree. The tracking system that Vive uses is far superior to Oculus (camera based tracking) and is less glitchy. Large tracking volume will not be negligible just because Rift gets hand tracking, especially as hand tracking isnt for seated experience.

  • @noalarmsplease5872

    @noalarmsplease5872

    8 жыл бұрын

    blackmagic x That's what I said. The Rift's headset itself is better than the Vive but the technology (tracking) is less advanced. However, for the majority of users, the tracking will be identical between both Vive and Rift because the play area for most users will be small enough that the Vive's superior tracking won't actually make a difference. It's like having a car with 450 horsepower and a car with 500 horsepower. Sure, one is technically better than the other but most people will never be in a situation where they can take advantage of that extra horsepower.

  • @erikm9768

    @erikm9768

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Jody Brennan Okay. But until Rift have hand tracking and two cameras to allow a larger volume its quite a bigger difference than that. And for a Rift user to pay for all that they will have paid more or the same as a Vive anyway... i wouldnt choose the Rift unless I knew i would be seated all the time and uninterested in exploring VR in bigger depth.

    Is that her apartment? like her actual home? that's a really nice apartment, I like the way the living room is set up. Also, I would totally buy a vive, but it's $1,149.00 in Canada, and that's way too expensive, that's like half a pay check and for many people an entire paycheck or more, I could buy a motorcycle for that amount of money.

    My biggest question would be the effects of long-term sessions. I know that all headsets have improved tremendously in reducing eye fatigue, but what about perception? I hear of people who have difficulty with depth perception and an unclear sense of space outside of VR after extended use, having to wait before their brains readjust to the normal world. I haven't heard much else about it lately but I'm wondering if this is still a problem.

    I used this in a mall a few times for about an hour of total use. It has come a LONG way but has a LONG way to go. Paired with a kick ass alienware this headset really gives you amazing VR experience. We are talking FPS indistinguishable from reality. But of course, the quality isn't quite there. Whoever buys these early VR's is going to hate themselves. These little guys will be 100X better in about a year or so. But find your nearest microsoft store and try this.

    This seems like a huge difference in expectations than what the Oculus Rift has in the immediate future. I want to be able to walk around and feel like I'm in the world and it looks like now ONLY the Vive can provide that. But what about the reverse? Oculus is suposed to have very precise rotation so when you are sitting down it feels very 1:1. Does the Vive also have this precision or is that the caveat to making your whole room a part of the game?

  • @aohige

    @aohige

    8 жыл бұрын

    +piclemaniscool tracking is smooth on both, but VIVE has the advantage here. Oculus uses a single directional camera with a cone view in front of it, and not really ideal for tracking anything that's not immediately in front of it. In other words, Vive can do what Oculus can, but not vice versa. Oculus's advantage is primarily its price, polished aesthetics, and having a different set of library of games. Obviously the latter may not be a long term advantage, as profiles will likely be built for both systems eventually. I'm not saying the Vive will be a clear winner from here on though, as Rift can definitely improve in the next versions, and Rift Touch will close the gap between the two products by a little.

The Vive definitely looks to be the best of the bunch, but why they heck couldn't they make the headset more ergonomic? Sony really nailed the design of theirs. I think I will keep waiting, but if Vive makes it to the next generation, I will seriously consider i t. Any comment's on HTC's customer support? I've read many reviews on Amazon saying it's atrocious. That right there is enough to turn me off from buying their product.

    I think VR gaming will pick up steam over the next years as VR and AR interactions will bring a new user experience for people who use the internet and want to see different worlds. Ironically it kind of makes perfect sense for us to be using VR with Covid19 shutting down the real world.
