Thanks for this quick video, although the sound reproduction in the video wasn't recorded using high end gear, but i am glad that to find this quick review......because it's so hard to find anything on the internet about HSU Research. I am contemplating to buy their VTF3 MK5 (15inch), still thinking whether to buy one or go for dual. My current living room size is 24ft D X 13ft W with high ceiling around 12ft. Further more, i have a L shape section in the size of 12X12.

My living room is 17x30, listen position is about 13ft, and I found one vft2 was adequate for my setup. I probably tap into only 35% of its potential and it rocks the house at that! Still have enough head room for more power and volume. Few reasons I didnt go dual was cost, space, power consumption, and keeping the wife happy lol. Also, if I had a change of heart then only way to get full refund was if I return in person at their location. Which is about 70miles for me, return shipping would cost me. The VFT3s are behemoths and a thing of beauty. I did demo it during my visit at HSU headquarters, OMG! It's heart pounding. They have u sit front of the sub and demoed Interstellar, I was one with space jump! I soooo wanted it, but chickened, Love the idea of dual setup 😁

Interesting, your room size is large too and you said it's enough for your usage. I am not sure now...lol... Maybe because of my high ceiling and the L shape part. Yeah the shipping cost is the only thing I am concerned what if I don't like and want to return. Maybe just treat as a weekend drive with family to Anaheim to return it...... About 5.5 hours one way....lol

I just got dual VRF-2 MK5 and when I set to auto mode it does not turn unless I increase the volume quite a bit. Do you use the auto mode? If you do, does it turn on at relatively low volume (-30db)?

Congrats on the subs! Yeah I use auto on mine, usually it kicks when I have volume atleast 50% in the AVR.. but when watching movies (depends on what), I have to increase volume 60-70%.. it's a big sub and needs a strong enough signal to get the woofer going. HSU support said you can always leave the sub in on position, but I don't mind leaving it auto. My AVR sub cut off is at 120hz, with -5db gain, input source +5db... So far it works out pretty well, took a while to calibrate and find the sweet spot, but I love it!

@@mikedavis9554 yeah, they were good, sub was very strong pounding bass but.. my reason for changing was to get a sub that play at lower frequency for less cost. So I ended up with BIC PL200ii, cost like $300 and can play low 22hz which give that deep bass, vs the Klipsch r120sw will cost $380 and play as low as 29hz

I dont regret this purchase nor do i think i need an upgrade, my room size is 20x30... BUT.. takes a bit of tweaking, I had to reach out to their support team with details of my setup and they were nice enough to walk me through it... especially when adjusting distance, crossover, q-control, or eq, and other settings on your AVR to match your speakers and this SUB... avoid using any 'auto setup' from ur AVR, it doesnt know what kinda sub you have and will give out wrong reading

I prefer two ports open, which makes 20s and 30s frequency slight stronger and a better listen experience for me. It's what I consider close to movie theater. Having one port open was weird, I didn't enjoy it, I felt the vibration of 18-20hz wasn't enjoyable to my ears. The rest of my setup with 2 ports open, Q set to 0.3, volume knob quarter way, AVR crossover at 100hz, AVR distance set at 7ft (my couch is 13ft away), AVR sub gain -5db

When you listen to them side by side, they sound very close.. but! you get the upper hand with HSU subs with the amount of control you have over bass and it looooves high volume. Built quality is alot better too, feels very durable. I was on the fence like, then I got my hands on both of them and kept the HSU VTF-2 :D Happy every since!

Not sure if you made your choice but I have two HSU VTF2 MK5s and it can go low. I can feel the floor shaking 30 feet away and not really hear it because of how low in hz it is hitting. From my understanding Dr. Hsu actually designed the BIC PL200. Can't go wrong with HSU though. I love mine.

And as Sazzad said, you do need to play with it to get it how you want. I ultimately went one port open. I believe Q5. Played mass effect 3 and when shooting certain guns I thought I was gonna be sick from how hard it was hitting. I have mine turned up about 1/4 volume and subwoofer level 4db lower in my speaker level calibration than my other speakers or its insanely loud. Couldn't hear words over the bass in some war movies when machine guns are firing if you have it matched with the other speakers db levels

Yes, I have two subs, klipsch r120sw and the Hsu... I prefer to run my Hsu sub solo, only because it can deliver huge amount of bass for my taste. VTF MK5 is very powerful by itself!!! I felt adding a 2nd sub overpowered the low frequency sound effects, and I had to scale the volume down to find that sweet spot... I like my home theater setup balanced, one set of frequencies should not overpower the rest 😊
