HP Spectre x360 13" (late 2018) vs. Lenovo Yoga C930 Smackdown

Ғылым және технология

Lisa Gade compares two premium Windows 10 Ultrabook convertibles with 360 degree hinges, quad core CPUs and pen: the 13.3” HP Spectre x360 gem cut (late 2018 model) and the 13.9” Lenovo Yoga C930. Both have classy aluminum casings, Intel 8th gen U series CPUs (the HP’s is a little newer), your choice of a full HD or 4K UHD touch screen with support for their respective included pens, fast NVMe SSDs and up to 16GB DDR4 RAM.

I watch a lot of tech reviews sometimes, and these are probably the best tech reviews in the world, especially when comparing devices, since reviews that don't discuss the relative merits or downsides of other devices in its class sometimes miss important considerations. And god damn, Lisa hits them all! I have yet to see a reviewer that is as consistently good at Lisa in all categories, from pacing of the review to the amount of detail presented.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Lisa. Great video again - already put in the thumbs up!. Even when it comes to tech that I am not going to buy - you make it so easy to just have a look and see what is going on over there. I am a Surface book 2 user and a Windows fan however I have watched so many Mac reviews and comparisons as well as other tech reviews of yours. They are always informative, funny and the information is usually not just useful for these machines but for understanding how the manufacturers put them together. You also explain the trends that are prevalent at the moment. Love that. All in all - your videos are fantastic. Wishing you all the best in the new year and looking forward to more videos.

@@BlandestBoy2 I bought the 4K version and I run it at 3840x2160 @ 175%. It's a nice laptop but coming from a MacBook Pro 17 (early 2009)" that's lasted me well since 2010 when I bought it, it's a little depressing going from 8 - 10 hours easy down to about 3.5 to 6 depending on the work load placed on it despite the technology is 8-9 years later and the screen is 3" smaller. I get too that's there's a difference in resolution but when you're use to so many hours of battery life and it just doesn't happen, it takes a little getting use to. I'm also not crazy that when the C930 hits 40% battery that it lowers the brightness of the screen and then goes lower as the battery diminishes. I would prefer control over that. It's possible that could be an easily adjustable energy setting but I haven't looked into it. I guess the battery shortage can be overlooked when you realize the charger can charge in about 15 - 20 minutes up to about half of the battery. That's impressive. It's a good laptop if you're considering an ultra book. It's well made, sound bar is amazing, extremely fast finger print scanner, cool pen intergration, solid feel when changing it to a 2-1, small footprint, etc. It gets a little warmer than I prefer when on my lap but I also place a heavy demand on it, so that's to be expected. What I love about this laptop is how fast it can cool it's self. You can go from a sweating leg down to almost no recognizable heat in about 30 seconds after the fans stop. I went with the 4K version because of the 16 GB memory option. If I had to do it over, I would probably get my hands on a Thinkpad X1 Yoga and compare the two. HP looks nice, but I've never had great experience with HP in the past.

  • @BlandestBoy2

@@SethParr Thank you, that was very informative! I'm actually planning to order that exact model today so it's nice to know what to expect, especially as I'm also coming from a MacBook. However, I'm using a lot of Excel spreadsheets at uni, and my trusty old Mac doesn't care for it and the battery life is not very good anymore. I considered the Thinkpad X1 Yoga as well but unfortunately, it costs about $1200 more in my country if you want 16gb of RAM. When it comes to battery life, I would generally prefer a 1080p model to increase battery life but I heard that the 1080p display on the C930 was pretty underwhelming and after using a Retina screen for so long, I think it would just bug me too much. Large spreadsheets aside, I don't use a lot of demanding software, so I'm hoping it will last me about 6-7 hours on a regular basis. I mainly just want a 2-in-1 that is good for taking notes by hand and that won't become super slow and outdated for at least 4-5 years. I am almost certain that you can change the brightness setting so that it becomes completely manual by the way. I'm pretty sure I saw that in a video covering what settings to immediately change when you get a new PC. May I ask what you primarily use the laptop for?

@@BlandestBoy2 I'll look for that video. I've been away from a dedicated Windows machine for a very long time...since XP, so the video would be a good re-introduction. Thanks for that! I was a Senior Graphic Artist for almost a decade before I switched careers to what I do now. I'm a Licensed Public Adjuster. Basically, it means I'm an Insurance Professional that represents the Public against Insurance Companies. All the software (Xactimate, FLIR tools, MS Office, etc.) is either proprietary to Windows or runs better on Windows in my experience. I attempted to run all the windows software through Parallels on the MBP and while it worked, the bottleneck was the maxed out 8 GB of memory when running two OS on top of each other plus the needed software. Also, processing client drone footage, the machine ran very hot (burning temp) when on the lap which is expected with a 2.93 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. I bought one of the cooling pads but carrying that around with the laptop just wasn't good. The MBP was a great machine and I think still is for a Graphic Design / Photography Adobe CC / Corel, etc. environment that sits on a desk and is portable to another desk. The machine while I still love today despite limitations with interactions of today's technology is simply not field portable which now is a big preference with what I do. I can take the C930 in attics, roofs and catastrophe zones. I can put it on my lap with minimal discomfort, run all required software natively, sketch when in the field without having to carry an additional stylus, have very good sound for conference calls when in noisy environments-etc., have memory requirements for now and hopefully like you that will be capable for the next 4 -5 years+ and a resolution that's going to support the future of external monitors as I see 1080p fading out for larger external displays. Personally, I'm really liking the 3840x2160 @ 175% resolution. It's a good mix between a 1920x1080 and a 3840x2160 both at 100%. While I agree about the X1 Yoga price difference, it was the option of a Matte Screen, more capable AdobeRGB, SRGB NTSC (should the graphic itch come on), legendary keyboard, and retractable keyboard into the body when used as a 2-1 that caught my attention over the C930. But In reality, they both have their pros and cons. I've heard the speaker on the X1 Yoga are ok, not great and the X1 weighs a little more than the C930, etc. I've said a lot, so I'll close with this, If you're getting the C930 today, congrats!!!, it's a well-built machine, I feel strongly you're going to like it. It's a very capable 2-1 ultrabook.

As usual, a through and objective review. Lisa, if money were no object, I would probably go with the HP because of the screen. I also like the portability of a 13" device. (I'm a senior citizen, and I find the HP to be the most beautiful laptop I have ever seen. Because of the blue/grey finish, I think the gold is very attractive, not at all over the top). Happy New Year! (And keep up the BAAD jokes and comments).

I had the HP reviewed here. Came with so many problems (screen, hinges, speakers, stability issues etc) that HP embarrassingly took it back after a few unsuccessful repairs (not to mention the countless times I had to reinstall Windows 10). The absolute worst piece of tech (crap?) I have bought in my 37 years as an IT guy. I'm actually perplexed that a premium product from a premium brand can come with such poor quality.

Yeah I saw a deal on 4k, and then I saw open box so its like 300 less, so I pulled the trigger. I was on the fence about FHD vs UHD. Of course I can't see the difference on the 13 inch as far as pixel. It just looks brighter and sharper. Don't know how to explain it. side by side one looks more premium. However, I did think I would care about the battery, but then I asked myself, 'How often do I do anything on my laptop for more than a couple hours? 7 hours means I would get at least 3 solid uses out of it. If I am just web browsing and typing then I would probably get 4-5 on 4k. So I don't think the 3 hr boost with FHD is worth having the weaker screen. Plus the 4k was on sale for cheaper than the FHD so....no brainer.

I too am looking forward to your review! But I ended up buying the 15t gem cut already. In the first week, for whatever reason, my OS wasn't running quite right (not sleeping or shutting down properly, or waking up well). I ended up doing a Windows full "reset this PC" and now it's running perfectly. The hardware is beautiful and solid (with Poseidon blue). The display brightness is about on-par (maybe a bit brighter) than Surface Pro 5 (just visually comparing them side-by-side). I love a very bright display, and I wasn't blown away by it, but for all sorts of indoor-lighting (even natural outdoor big-window lighting) it is a very decently bright display, and I'm very happy with it. Although I ended up hating the Synaptic drivers and used a trick I found online (www.windowscentral.com/how-enable-precision-touchpad-drivers) to force-install precision drivers and now the trackpad works wonderfully and I configure it in all the ways I want. A thing to note is that while the GPU works great for games, the fan is almost always running on the machine, even while idle on the desktop (the fan gets quiet and spins slow, but it's there) this was a noticeable difference from my Surface Pro (5) or my ASUS t304UA which was a lot more conservative for CPU and no discrete GPU. tl;dr, now that the OS is running smoothly (after the reset, you may never have this problem) I have no regrets, it's a very powerful, big, and beautiful system.

i got the hp spectre late 2018 model and i was so excited. unfortunately it had uneven hinge and made a weird noise when i listen closely to the speakers, not to mention it was a huge fingerprint magnet. i was turned off and returned it. Got the yoga c930 and i've been happy :) spectre is very beautiful to be honest, but i would rather have sturdy build quality. I felt very uncomfortable to hold spectre cause i was afraid i would put too much pressure on it. If you press down on the chassis it bends down a bit, and I didn't like that. Yoga feels very sturdy and reliable, and i feel comfortable switching it to tablet mode and laptop mode with ease.

Id like to start off by wishing you a Happy 2019. Now on to my comments. As a long time Apple user (but not fanboy), I have been getting tired of Apple's shenanigans over the years and started looking at Windows alternatives. Your laptop reviews are techy and informative spec-wise, but they never address the real concerns most of us have when considering a windows machine. Things like how good is HP or Lenovo with reliability? Can one safely run windows update without messing up the drivers on these laptops? What kind of long-term hardware issues pop up with time? Let me give you an example using the highly touted, recently released Huawei Matebook X Pro - an extremely interesting laptop that by all accounts is considered the Macbook Pro Killer. KZread reviews praise and praise this machine, but some quick digging into user forums quickly reveals that there are quality control issues with the Matebook X Pro. Things like rattling trackpad and coil whine. HP forums are filled with hate, and never-again-hp comments. I would like reviewers to do some more homework before they upload quick 1 week reviews of laptops, comparing technical specs against other laptops... everyone can do that. Go deeper, give us some real assessment that our newly bought machine will actually last, that these companies stand behind their customer, and show us real-world hardware issues that can crop up not just after a few days of usage. After all, you get to return the laptop after a week. We are stuck with it for years.

Well said. I've been a Macbook user for 10 years now and I'm getting fed up with the issues. I've also been looking at Windows options, because you can get more value for less money, but reliability is a huge concern. I've had HP and Dells in the past and they gave me nothing but problems. But seriously getting sick of having to buy a new MBP after just 3 years given their ridiculous prices.

I'll try to help. HP Spectre: HP's flagship line with what seems to be i7 processor laptops only and a stand alone model (Spectre Folio) is also in that line. (The Spectre line used to have i5 laptops) HP Envy: More Value, HP's secondary line that is more attractive to people that can't shell out for a Spectre but still wand a good laptop. Has i3, i5, Ryzen 3, 5 and 7 laptops.

Long version.....I've owned many laptops from various vendors. Apple 15" MacBook Pro, Dell (several models), Lenovo Yoga (12" and 13" versions) and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (1st and 4th generation). My favorite by far is the X1 Carbon. Least favorite is the MacBook Pro - didn't like it at all and gave it to my son who also didn't like it - heavy and lousy battery but that was probably 5 years ago so maybe its better. I have 2.5 yr old Lenovo X1 Carbon that I am typing on now. If you want the absolute best keyboard get a ThinkPad Carbon. The issue I have with it is the screen is starting to go on it. It's constantly flickering so maybe there's a loose connection inside. I went to the forums and lots of people are having the same issue. It does seem that after 2 to 3 years things start going downhill with laptops. The 2 Yoga's are several years old and have not had any problems but they are only used occasionally by my wife (we have 2 homes so we have one at each home). Bottom line is the laptop has to fit your needs. What's most important to you from a features standpoint? For me it's the 2-in-1 capability, battery life and portability. I narrowed it down to Lenovo Yoga 940 (replaces the 930 used in this review) and the HP Spectre x360. I did not like the Dell and its lousy battery life. The newest (as of 10-23-19) Spectre x360 has the 10th generation Intel Ice Lake CPU, the Yoga 940 also has it. The battery life on the x360 is better than the Yoga 940 (perhaps because the screen is almost an inch shorter on the x360) by a few hours and the keyboard on the x360 is far and away better than the Yoga 940. Unlike the X1 Carbon with its fantastic keyboard, I do not like the Yoga keyboard - very mushy. The 940 is also slightly more expensive but not by much. So I bought a new HP Spectre x360 with the 1080p display. The 4k display is nice but it just sucks up the battery and do you really need 4k on a screen that small. I also like the smaller footprint on the x360 over the Yoga 940. I purchased the 3 year warranty with accidental damage which cost an additional $240. The unit itself loaded up with the i7 Ice Lake CPU, 16 Gb RAM, 1 Tb SSD w/32 Gb cache and the 1080p display is $1,600. Add in the extended warranty and its slightly over $1,800+tax. Ouch! However a more modest configuration costs substantially less, in $1,300 range. If you buy one of their pre-configured models it could be even less. I should be receiving it late November so there is a decent build period but I configured it myself instead of buying one of the pre-configured models.

@@Recklessr700 Yes I have been using the Spectre x360 for a couple months now. It's a great little unit. Again, I have the i7 CPU, 16Gb RAM and 1Tb SSD. The standard 1080p display is all you need. The brightness and clarity is fantastic. It's fast and the Wifi card is strong. Keyboard and trackpad are great. I like the physical button on the right side that turns the video cam off/on. Great security feature. Battery life is around 8 to 10 hours with brightness at 70-80%. If you ratchet it down to 30% you can probably squeeze 12 to 15 hours out of it which is very good but nowhere near the 22 hours HP claims. In reality the battery life perfect for my needs. The laptop itself is beautiful and has a very solid build. Quality is excellent. Very little bloatware is preinstalled. It took me 10 minutes to uninstall the apps I didn't want. Cons are few but here are my gripes. 1. Being right handed I prefer the trackpad offset slightly to the left like the X1 Carbon does. I'm constantly accidentally touching it with my right palm so I'm trying to adjust to typing with it. 2. I wish HP would have located the 2nd USB-C port on the left side of the unit. Both are on the right side. Depending on which side the power outlet is on having a USB-C port on both sides allows you to plug it in without wrapping the power chord around backside of the unit. 3. The speakers are on underside of the right and left side of the unit. This is unfortunate because the speakers are actually very good sounding. Its not a huge deal but why couldn't they locate them on top between the display hinges like Lenovo does on some of their newer Yoga's. That's about it. No show stoppers. Its a great solid laptop and I would buy it again.
