HP Probook 6550b - changing CPU thermal paste the easy way

The main problem with this model HP laptop is the CPU thermal paste dries out and the laptop overheats. This will show you how to change just the thermal paste without the complete disassembly and teardown of the laptop. This can easily be done in under 5 minutes.

Under the power button cover is only 2 more screws to remove the fan in order to have easy access to the cpu and sink. You don't have to disassemble the whole laptop.

Not WD 40 to remove old heatsink, scrap it off with your finger nail and use isopropyl alcohol to clean the residue.

I couldn't justify giving a thumbs-up to a clown act that could be mistaken for sound advice, but this video had me laughing too hard to justify a thumbs-down, because I could imagine being annoyed enough by a ProBook 6550b to get that careless with it. I bought one used, about six or seven years ago, for more than it was worth, and it demanded special treatment so obnoxiously that I named it after Dwight Schrute. It would overheat so suddenly that I couldn't shut it down properly before it could shut itself off. It destroyed batteries faster than I could afford to replace them, and eventually destroyed some unread e-mail by damaging the hard drive. After it cooled and I started it back up, it would decide on a case-by-case basis whether or not each function key listed in its menu should do what the menu said it did. It could resume after hibernating, if it was in the mood. because it was configured to pass control to GRUB by default, but sometimes it decided to start up IE in kiosk mode instead, perhaps to punish me for not wanting to run Windows more than a couple of times a year. The soft modem had a free Linux driver, but not for any kernel I could use. I had to write shell scripts to get some of the extra keys to do anything, and the calculator key was a useless ornament. The mesh in front of the speakers took about a year to rot and fall off, and then the left button under the touchpad took about another year to turn into a crater. I used the optical drive about twenty times before it died. Then the SD card reader started damaging every card it touched. Funsies. So jabbing the motherboard with a screwdriver a couple of times almost looked like a good thing to try! Thanks for the entertainment.

Oh so much wrong with this lol. Reads 6550b as 6005b, can't see that he just unscrewed the RAM cover, not the keyboard release screw. For an extra 2 minutes of thinking and unscrewing, you could have taken off the touchbar, heatsink, and fan, given the fan a good cleanout, properly cleaned the gunk off the heatsink, and had a more professional looking video. But, still, it's better than some peoples 'instructional videos'I've seen on here

That's what makes us all creators here in KZread. We all do it our own way for instance I had a lot of satire and I throw in the occasional pun when I can. I would love to see what you have in mind please make your video and I will watch it and I will like it and give it a thumbs up. Cheers

@@jasonhornby3161 Hi Jason. I came on here to find out why one of my 2 HP Probook 6550b laptops were running way too high in basic idle mode. Within 15 seconds of your titled video for this laptop, you failed to even identify it correctly, then proceeded to undo the RAM screw, not the keyboard retention screw. And to top it all off, you decided to drop your heatsink, with its flaky bits directly onto your CPU socket, while showing just how dry your thermal paste was. The 2 minutes I was referring to was pointing out that the keyboard ribbon cable, and also the touchbar, could have been removed, giving you access to the heatsink, fan, and CPU, allowing you to do a proper job in rectifying your overheating problem. BTW, computers don't recognise satire, only properly implemented procedures. What you did with that heatsink was misleading, and potentially fatal to somebody else's CPU, since particles in pinholes causes problems. I realize you were trying to help others out with your video, but if it was me, I would have been a bit more professional, and not only planned out the steps, but also an explanation as to what was happenning, and why. As to your response about me posting my own video? I could do that, but I'd first need a better cam than my crappy phone, but I can at least do a slideshow, with arrows, and instructions on screen, without ear-blowing music, and still get the point accross(not that yours had music...good call) Consider this Challenge Accepted! And I expect your thumbs up, buddy.| Or criticism, cos it's gonna be my first, and I have so much I want to do with these laptops. Make 2 become 1 so to speak. My first suffered a cracked screen, but my 2nd overheats, supposedly, which is how I came to your video, as well as others. So now I gotta do a screen replacement, cpu paste replacement, and fan cleaning. And have to record it. Oh, joy! Thanks for that. J/k dude. I'm gonna do it, cos it needs to be done, so I might as well record it. I won't be speaking, cos, well, I'm Scottish, and a Kiwi, so I don't record too weel, but I can write Notepad files to explain, and my Paint skills are pretty decent ;) Wow, I didn't realize this was gonna be that long. Apologies. Cheers from New Zealand :D
