Hoya imperialis | 30 Days of Hoya - 26 of 30

Hello and welcome to the most shameful Hoya that I have! This Hoya imperialis arrived to me 10 months ago in a very poor condition and it has been struggling ever since. Nothing seems to work for this one, and there is more to that than just my care. I explain it all in the video. Sorry for the length. I didn’t really want to talk about this one at first, but this might end up being a helpful video for some, so why the heck not. We can’t show pretty plants all the time. You will find additional information in the sheet attached in the description below. I hope you still enjoy the video and find it useful despite the not-so-good-looking Hoya. Join me tomorrow for another #30DaysofHoya video!

Excellent job pointing out the different quality of clones. It's something many don't consider when selling/buying cuttings.

Yes! I agree. I had more luck with cuttings from collectors. Yes, they do cost a bit more, but they also grow better and they are stronger plants. I believe it also took a lot of money and trials and errors for collectors to find a good cutting because there are so many in circulation. I will definitely try to get another H. imperialis and I hope it will be a better clone.

I am pretty sure it will stay like this :D I firmly believe it's the clone. The gunung gading I received from the same person died in shipping (5 days) and gunung gading cutting I received from Sweden didn't drop a leaf and it spent 2 weeks in the box.

Hi Miro, how do we know which Hoya is terrestrial. Is there any website we can look up to?

So now having the same problem after watching both you and Doug, but discovered my problem was the seller had to put the cutting into a coco peat with small amounts of perlite and bark. So the stem underneath the soil was going in a direction of mush. It had shot out a new leaf but the lower two cuttings dropped off. So I think its a good cutting just not the right mix. I stuck it in my terrarium chamber to help it root up some more and all my Hoyas love it for rooting. After that I will put it in the mix of better drainage. I just did the same with my Archboldiana and Meredithii changed the soil mix. I think sellers stick larger heavier leaves into coco peat to keep the plant down in weight but ends up creating root rot.

Oddly enough, mine is doing really well in semi-hydro! It finally took off! I did break the growth point few days ago because I am an idiot 🙃 But other than that, doing great!

@@frasercook5823 Oh no! I am sorry to hear that. When I re-rooted mine, it was a super tiny cutting, with 2 very small leaves and a growing tip. So maybe there is still hope! I am glad you found another one though!

This one is the worst one! 😅I am glad to hear you enjoyed it. I do have some more, I recently bought new cuttings :) I will make sure to make a video about those, they are almost ready to be potted up! And there will be more Hoya videos and possibly a different Hoya series. :)

Thank you! I am glad you are enjoying it :) I only have one imperialis so I can't compare it to anything really. I think the leaves should be similar, and I would definitely wait for the flower to ID it.

I am also the proud owner of a magnificent Hoya imperialis (palawan) and... there's basically only 4 leaves on it, grouped in 2 pairs, and separated by like a meter of internode... -_- It looks so silly.

We shall see! I am not too hopeful about this one. If it's a bad clone, it can't be helped. But I will try to get a different one for sure.

The cutting? Haha, it has been worse. I won't be terribly sad if I lose it, but it would be ideal if it would recover. I am on the look out for a new H. imperialis though.

Thank you :) that is very generous. My imperialis actually almost died and I saved a tiny cutting - 2 baby leaves and a piece of stem. It rooted and I put it into leca. It now has 5-6 nodes and some big leaves!
