How will St. Louis's absence affect the Montreal Canadiens? | HI/O Show

Host Jessica Rusnak of CBC DayBreak and our panelists - Gazette columnist Stu Cowan, former Canadiens defenceman and assistant coach Rick Green and hockey analytics expert Andrew Berkshire - discuss the impact of head coach Martin St. Louis's indefinite leave on the Habs.
Green also weighs in on the time commitments and pressures of being a coach in the NHL.
Also discussed:
• Cole Caufield has more assists than goals this season. What gives?
• The Canadiens' decision to play defenceman Kaiden Guhle - a left-hand shot - on the right side with Mike Matheson as his partner
• Rafaël Harvey-Pinard has only one goal in 31 games after scoring 14 goals in 34 games last season.

“As a group, I don’t think there’s such a thing as a right and a left handed defenceman.” Rick Green needs more recognition for his hockey knowledge. Very glad to listen to him every week

Why are they not taking advantage of Arbers big shot, especially on the powerplay

Thank you Stu for mentioning that Armia's play lately has been right up there with the best he's ever offered I think in the Boston game he should have been afforded the opportunity to be on the overtime I think he would have made a difference That's my take you guys do a great job thank you for that I always enjoy hockey inside out appreciate it

Best wishes to Martin and his family.. That being said, the team needs him. They are a couple of pieces away from competing next year in addition all of their good players will advance in quality into next season.

The team definitely doesn't need MSL right now, the more we lose, the better, this year. Im sure he will be back by the beginning of next season, (that's next October), when we r SUPPOSED to be making the jump to contenders. I hope we really do, i cant handle another year of no playoffs, it SUCKS!!!

@@toddlauretteHabsFanget used to it. Unless they make a big splash at the draft/over the summer, they likely won't make the playoffs next year either, albeit they will likely be closer to it. I can see them fighting for a wild card spot but coming up just short at the end of it.

@@viper29ca Hughes and Gorton say they want to start competing next season, but no, im with you, i can't see it either. Unless it's like u said, we squeak in to that last wild card spot. We aren't THAT far from contending, 2 goal scorers is basically all we need, 3 would be nice, but if we could get 2 guys that can score over 35 goals a season, that could be the difference of all the 1 goal games we've had, from 0 points to 2. It just blows having playoffs, with no Canadiens. I wouldnt expect to draft anyone great this year either, if they would just take a page from Chicago or San jose, and just lose, we'd be in a much better spot. It'd be nice to get a top 3 pick, even if we get in the top 5, i find the draft rankings are all over the place, so we could get a steal at 5th or so. IF we actually draft a forward... I wont even get started on that! lol.

I thought the Habs game versus Edmonton was one of their best this season, even though they didn't get the win. BUT, Joshua Roy injured, the coincidental contact that led to the Armia 4 minute high sticking penalty, when will the hockey Gods start smiling on the Montreal Canadiens.

Yeah, the Montreal Canadiens have 13 games left on the schedule. If Cole Caufield could score 5 more goals during that time to reach 25 for the season, it would be considered a good year for his stats in the future. He turned his game around and has changed it drastically. Last year in 2022/23 he registered just 10 assists. This season he has 34 assists. However, last season he played in only 46 games. In today's NHL, Cole has played in 69 games.

Habs need a few years to develop, adding a big center like that kid Lindstrom would be ideal, but he’s ranked 3rd. Too much hype around Caufield, Hutson etc. the team is still too small for typical playoff physicality. Except for Trevor Letowski, their bench coaches are not experienced hockey coaches. What established business thrives long term with installing a learn-on-the-job departmental management for 2+ years with no up-grades. Hughes and Groton are great so far but it’s time for some coaching support for Marty. It remains to be seen that Marty can work with assistants who have real cv’s and merit.

Agree about physicality (now) but believe this style can win if Habs add size. It's like: Zebras might be a good add for regular season but he makes the team too small for playoff hockey.

Cole Caufiled seems to be at the dots quite a bit when he is shooting and very rarely do you seem him in a position staring straight the goalie with more of the net to shoot at vs being at the dots his shot has to be perfect. Armia has improved but he was a guy who spent time in Laval because nobody wanted him. RHP gets very few shots per game - I believe a key factor in scoring.

Days gone by. Pollock, Irving, English? Bowman, Gainey and Robinson, English. Albeit they spoke French. Why wouldn't this new generation of players be just as capable. Commitment? Of course. Why put in the effort, then get traded. There is little to no loyalty, and that's just a fact.

Won't affect them at all, MSL is not a coach by training anyway. He should have been made an assistant coach, not the head coach, at least for a few years.

Since St. Louis has been gone, HABS haven't won a game yet, 2-8 record in the last 10. Roy is out 4-6 weeks from injury. I mean what more can go wrong. HABS can't seem to keep guys healthy (this has been an issue for years). All we can say is the GM is a master at what he is doing and he's doing things right....LOL....I haven't seen much results to be honest. We need a top scorer, actually we need 2 top 6 forwards badly, we need to let Gallagher and Anderson go....rip the band aid off buy them out and rid of these guys taking up space with large contracts and producing NOTHING. Again bad contracts from the past GM Marc B.

If a non Francophone coach were to win the cup in Montreal the fans would react in the way fans of teams that win the cup do. The Francophone coach issue is a political, media issue and not a fan issue. Winning solves all problems.

Wondering for next year, since Savard seems to work wonders with new young D, if Hutson isn't on his left side next year. So then you have: Matheson Guhle Hutson Savard Xhekaj Mailloux Either Harris or Kovacevic as the 7th, the other guy traded away. Savard will likely get traded at the deadline next year, in comes Reinbacher to take his place after most of a year in Laval, or Harris/Kovacevic.
