    Your keyboard forces you to, but it's a little bit funny that you have to write Dusseldorf instead of Düsseldorf, because Dussel is a german word for idiot or fool. So, Dusseldorf would mean - literally translated - Village of the Idiots. Probably, some proletarians would agree to you :D. You didn't really find Leipzig. The app is right that the name consists of the syllables Leip and Zig, but not Leiz and Pig. Perhaps, you had Schweinfurt in your mind ;-). Your problem with Berg and Burg is a little bit funny; but understandable as well. In English they are pronounced the same way but not in German. Burg is pronounced Boorg like in stood - or Bourg in some dialects. It means castle or fortress. Berg would be probably written Bairg in English, it means mountain; as you said.

Theres also a newspaper called "Die Welt" (The World) in Germany just like "Le Monde" (The World) in France or "O Globo" in Brasil. Other big german newspapers are the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung F.A.Z." (Frankfurt General Newspapers), "Süddeutsche Zeitung" (South German Newspaper) and the "Bild" (Picture) which is like the german version of "The Sun" and I think it is Europeans biggest newspaper by sales. "Der Spiegel" (The Mirror) is Germanys most sold news magazine ( like american "Time Magazine" or UKs "Economist").

    Baden-Baden is a city in the region Baden of Baden-Württemberg. The current state (or federal country) Baden-Württemberg is composed of Baden, Württemberg and the smaller region Hohenzollern. After WWII, they were organized into the 3 states Baden, Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern (France had control over Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern and America had control over Württemberg-Baden.) They later unified to the Baden-Württemberg we know and love today. ❤️

And you wanted to call it North Saxony, that is as well better as you might think. The northern area is lower than the southern, Bavaria has mountains Schleswig-Holstein is almost as flat as the Netherlands. So, many things are called Nieder... (Lower ...) which belong to the north of germany and Hoch... (High ...) which belong to the south. Same thing for the languages. There is Hochdeutsch and Niederdeutsch. And although we speek Hochdeutsch in all of Germany and it is our main language and although the clearest accent of Hochdeutsch is spoken in Hannover, which is in the North, Hochdeutsch is in fact a southern german language.

    Yeah, the approximate area of Lower Saxony (from 1814 until 1866 the Kingdom of Hanover) used to be called Altsachsen (Old Saxony) because it mostly encompassed the ancestral lands of the Saxons. The reason why the name "Saxony" moved farther east is because in the 12th century Duke Henry the Lion (Heinrich der Löwe) of Saxony and of Bavaria opposed and refused to assist the Holy Roman Emperor in his wars in Lombardy / Italy. He was thus stripped of his titles and banished from the realm (Reichsbann). The ducal title of Saxony, severely diminished in territory (Anhalt and Brunswick-Lueneburg et al. split off), was awarded to the House of Ascania which had possessions farther (south)east. The Ascanians later split into various lines of which Saxe-Wittenberg retained the Saxon ducal and elector titles. When in the 15th century the electoral Ascanian line died out, both titles were awarded to the Margrave of Meissen of the House of Wettin. Hence, "Saxony" moved even farther up the Elbe river (also known as Upper Saxony / Obersachsen) and eventually grew to include the approximate area now known as the federal state of Saxony (from 1806 until 1918 the Kingdom of Saxony).

    it pains me to hear non-germanic people read the ei in words like Leipzig and Zeit as "ey", its proper pronunciation in most cases is more in line with the ie in english words like lie which is "ai"

    Here in France for some reason everyone knows it's pronounced that way. And then we're weirded out when realizing it's pronounced "ey" in Dutch. But we still tend to forget that "ie" is pronounced "ee" in both languages.

    Münster is a city and the name of some church buildings. There's also a Münster in Münster. When I was in Münster once very shortly, I walked to what I thought was the Münster, later I found out it was "only" the Lambertikirche

    The Sachsen-Anhalt coin is still to come, also the Brandenburg and Thüringen coins. This year will be a "break" with a coin for the Bundesrat. I guess most Germans who will see the coin (out next Tuesday) won't even know what the Bundesrat is, and might think of the Bundestag/Reichstag building.

    Funny that you think towns like Baden-Baden or Brandenburg are among the biggest cities in Germany^^ I mean Brandeburg has about 70 000 inhabitants and Baden-Baden is even smaller with 55 000. Ok, to be fair the whole state of Brandenburg is named after that town and Baden-Baden sounds similar to Baden-Württemberg even though as a Swabian from Württemberg I don't like that you said "Baden-Baden is called Baden-Württemberg these days" because Baden-Baden was never the name of a country or a state (it was just Baden) and it kind of disrespects the long and glorious history of the Kingdom of Württemberg (ok I'm overexaggerating^^)! We Swabians don't like Baden! I mean the best thing about Karlsruhe is the Autobahn to Stuttgart!!! (don't take this too seriously, it's basically a love hate relationship) ;) Your other guesses were interesting as well because cities like Potsdam, Freiburg and Saarbrücken aren't that big either but at least they are cities with more than 100 000 people and they have been important cities in German history so I get why you would think of them^^

    @@xaverlustig3581 Well I don't say that Stafford is one of the biggest cities in England just because there's a Staffordshire (the county, not the dog^^). The biggest city in that county is actually Stoke-on-Trent while Stafford is only number five. But yes, it's an easy mistake to make, just like asuming the biggest city of every country in the world must automatically be the capital. There are often historical reasons why a region is named after a town or why there's a capital not being the biggest city in the country and it's easy to overlook that^^

  • @Chouyren

    @Chouyren

    @@ibx2cat well the Baden-Baden airport is sandwiched between Karlsruhe and Straßbourg so it works as an airport for these two cities and the surrounding area so you're not completely wrong but I mean London Stansted isn't exactly located in London either even though at least it still has London in it's name^^ Also Baden-Baden is a very expensive spa town with a beautiful old town and stuff so it's very popular with rich people who often take their private jets to go there.
