The older machine tools are still doing what they were meant to do. The last time I was in the shop in the Delaware City Refinery, they still had their machine tools that were from the 40s. They always had good success with their older machines. I have seen it in person over the years there. Now I have to agree with you on the flip flops I don't know how these guys can stand it. The cuttings gettingy between your foot and the sole would cut the feet badly. Anybody who's ever run or been around these machines knows how bad the chips can be usually they fly in to your shirt collar.

I used the same Webster Bennett lathe during the 80s and 90s. They are a good machine, i used to do work for Rolls Royce engines and Boeing aerospace on one, so with all the right tooling they are a capable machine!

the old Webster Bennets were great machine tools but without a guard, accident waiting to happen.

😂l cannot comprehend as to their regard to safety, the conditions that they work in, the state of the workshop floor, l can go on for ever, man this is sacralized to engineering. I wonder how they would react to being introduced to an organized modern workshop? Poor artisans they are expected to produce the goods and somehow achieve it! Amazing!!!!

I never wanted to work a VTL...looked very dangerous to me. I preferred manual lathes for making valves, couplings, pipe components.
@hydraulichands
4 ай бұрын
It's understandable! Working with a VTL can indeed be quite intimidating due to its size and power. Manual lathes offer a different kind of control and precision, especially for intricate components like valves and couplings. It's all about finding what works best for you and your comfort level in the workshop. Thanks for sharing your perspective! 🛠️👍
