I love being debt free! I own my home, zero debt and I was able to do it all myself by being willing to simply "go without" a lot of things that I just don't value more than financial security. It is worth it!!! I have suddenly found myself laid off, single and pregnant with my first child (Yay! It's a boy!). This had the potential to be the scariest time of my life. But between owning my home, my savings (it's really easy to save when you aren't paying rent) and living simply I will be able to provide for myself and my child without employment for at least a year. And I could continue to take care of all of our needs by working at a place like Starbucks. The security and peace this gives me is incredible. If an uneducated single mother with no outside support can do it- so can you!

Refreshing to see a responsible young family. I'm also debt free. It started years ago with credit cards. Paying them off one at a time. Then, we concentrated all our efforts into the house. We used to have 4 cars. Sold 2 and all the money went to the house, etc... It's a real blessing being able to breath. To feel free from any stress. Thanks for sharing. Blessings

I went back to college at 33, my savings were used up by the end of the first year, so I took out a loan for the remainder. I was massively in debt by the time I had graduated which was pretty terrifying. The interest rates were through the roof, and I was estimating a 40 year payoff. I got a job, paid myself a small amount each month and didn't 'cheat'. I paid off EVERYTHING in a year and a half. I will never forget that last payment - FREEDOM. Now I can actually save. I still pay myself a set wage every month from my total income, the rest goes into the bank.

Our farm house, barns and 5 acres we bought for $65,000 and we are 2 years in and only have 4 years left (we will be aggressive to pay off sooner) we have actually remodeled 75% (very affordably) and had our first baby. it's really nice to see others live the way my husband and I do. And I am also blessed to be able to raise my child at home

New subscriber here. We just finished paying off our mortgage in September. We also did it in less than 5 years. Feels so good doesn't it? We made double payments. I was still able to stay home. I was also able to take care of my mother when she got sick. My husband was off work recently for medical reasons and it felt so good not having to worry about money. All is good now and he's back to work. We always plan to live frugally. It gives you freedom and peace of mind. Looking forward to catching up on all your videos.

I'm so happy to hear your story. I grew up in a family where financial responsibility was non-existent (i.e. foreclosure, repossession and more than 100k of debt). I am currently paying off the hole I dug myself in (thankfully, not a lot), and I see your story as an inspiration. It's a struggle being a single mom in my twenties and wanting things that other people have, but I have come to the realization that I don't want to work until 72 to pay my debt off.

Oh Lisa you touched on so many amazing aspects of living a full life by not being in debt and living beyond your means. We are on the path to pay off our home in the next 3 years so when we do that it will be only a 10 years mortgage we had. I cant wait for that day to be 100% debt free from our home. its the only debt we have. I loved hearing your story and its very inspiring. You took a house and made it a home with all your hard work and love you put into it and now its even better because you own it 100%. Really enjoyed hearing your story.

Very seldom do you find someone of your age that is so responsible. So many young families want it all and want it now. Credit cards are nice to have for emergencies but I see so many people that are in debt over their heads. I'am 64 years old and I sew and make a lot of things myself instead of spending a lot of money. We are in a position to be able to get what we want but we live a very simple life. It is refreshing to hear you say that you don't need a new car or new furniture to be happy. I must tell you that I have wondered how you keep your house so neat and clean with 4 children. I see all the white in your home and I love it. I'am so glad I found your channel. I loved the tutorial you did on slip covering the chairs. You said "you have a pillow business" and I hope you will share some photos of that. You don't need material things in life and you live simply but you are very rich because you have your husband and 4 (almost 5) beautiful children.

This is great Lisa! Thanks for sharing this. We have a very similar story. We actually paid cash for our fixer upper farm and do not have a mortgage either! We have junker cars, do not have a TV, and have simplified our lives so we can live our dreams. Even though my husband loads trucks for Walmart I am able to stay home with our girls. It was so worth all the sacrifice at the beginning of our marriage to now be able to live with financial freedom! Simple living helps you focus on what truly matters.

Isn't it so amazing that you can live so free with such a small income? I have had women say to me, "well, my husband doesn't earn enough for me to stay to home." I guess they think I married a doctor or lawyer. We paid off our house back when he still earned 14 bucks an hour. It is SO worth it! Thank you so much for watching, friend!

Smart young couple. My husband and I have been debt-free since 2000. It took us 8 yrs. but it was worth it. Each time we paid something off, we celebrated with ice-cream cones. That might not sound like much to some, but once you stop eating out, it can be quite a treat. There's nothing like owing no man. Just wish we would've been smarter sooner! (Same here, Lisa. Our biggest expense is organic food. However, the health issues I once had, are beginning to disappear.).

I wish schools taught financial classes to students in schools. In my generation it was all about brand names, and what you had. Boy, I wish the yuppy generation wasn’t taught this idea in life. We struggle in life today. Our generation struggles. Hopefully, America will be more like Canadians. Save, save, save. Live within your means, and plan out your life. School, date, marry, live, save, home, kids, save, pay for kids college, save, retire comfortable.

Stop "believing" you "need" to struggle. freeneville.com (sorry for the link, it's important) will help you so much. I'm still learning but it opened my eyes. I just bought my own farmhouse (cash). Only a 1/2 an acre but it's a start and I put up a wood/wire fence surrounding. The more I see/feel done it's done. Magic happens everyday because I know it will. Blessings to you!! Oh, my folks were dust bowl generation. We only knew hand me downs or thrift stores, or get a job (haha) for what you want. I'm a widow who spent our life savings on a husband's illness. And no ss. So now I'm reinventing myself. Today's a good day. Today for tomorrow I will feel it real 😊 You are more powerful than you give yourself credit for ❤🙏❤

To all the young people starting out that are watching...this is the model to follow. We are nearing retirement and we started out with a fixer upper and both learned many skills along the years. We also did the new car thing until about 9 years ago which is debt slavery. We have only owned three homes (all fixers) in all the 35 years together but never refinanced debt for personal things. We did however refinance to acquire rental homes and lastly, 9 years ago when the economy collapsed, a rural foreclosed home on acreage to retire in. We finally woke up about debt about 12 years ago. We have been working on the the foreclosed home which is three hours away and it has been torn down to the studs and rebuilt. All done by my husband who built his skills over the years by watching people in the trades). We made a pact that we would incur zero debt during this reconstruction. We scavenged tons of things like kitchen cabinets, bathtubs, vanities, sinks, you name it. We gave up going on expensive vacations, going out to eat, started driving used cars and kept them after them long payments were done. Looking back the sacrifices were ALL worth it. Its 9 years later and this home is a beauty that has land to grow lots of food. I got the garden going (wood chip method-no dig) while my hubby was remodeling. We will retire to it this year debt free and sell our current house. We will bank the equity and have a nice nest egg because we stuck to the plan. We could have both retired about five years ago (thanks to Obamacare 👍🏻) if we had not incurred the debt. In our lifetime being in debt was the norm and we never thought about it until we were caught up in it. Im glad we finally woke up. We will never need loans again. We continue to buy used goods including furniture and clothes. There is such a huge waste stream to take advantage of. We are financially stronger and look forward to a comfortable retirement. Follow what this young woman has to say. She and her husband got it right! I wish we had been this smart at this age but at least we saw the light! Thanks for these words of wisdom. This is great advice. There is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment from hard work gone right!!!

I am currently expecting baby #5. My children are 7, 4, 2, 1, and due July 2018. We are completely debt free, we lived in a camper we remodeled into a tiny house for 3 years and saved every penny possible and now we are buying a house and we are hoping to move in April and I am so so so happy and excited. I just can't wait. We are going from 2 bedrooms 1 bath to 4 bedrooms 2 baths and 2 living rooms and an actual kitchen and dinning room. When we were telling our 7 year old he was so excited and said so it'll have a lovingroom seperate from the kitchen? It was so cute! Then I told him he'd have a playroom also. And when we don't need a nursery anymore that can be my craft area. My husband has worked very hard and climbed the ladder very quickly at his job making bonuses and getting promotions and raises and I'm so proud of him, but we have all made sacrifices to get here as quickly as possible. It has all paid off 😁

I think you and your husband did GREAT! I really enjoy watching your videos but this one is the most motivating! Sometimes longing for debt freedom feels lonely...like the whole world except for Dave ramsey says a 30yr loan is fine and my heart just races so fast whenever I think of a 30yr loan. We are looking to buy a new to us house and I want to look for something as cheap as livable allows for my geographical area. I don't know if 5yrs is doable but I just want to do the best I can to get out of debt fast.

Thanks for being a good example to young people. I get so frustrated seeing new couples wanting on day one all new things and the amount of things it took their parents/grandparents 30-40 years to be able to afford and possess. I remember icky used couches and being grateful for them. I also get angry with people criticizing larger than average families like yours who are doing everything right and are not a burden to society if anything you are doing the very thing families are supposed to, Grow. Wish you well thanks for the video- good info.

I think y'all are awesome! Frugality is something you don't see much these days. Our house has been paid for for years, but we are 53. Common sense should tell us with stuff "if you don't have the money to pay for it, don't buy it!" Enjoy those days home with your children; they pass way too quickly. God bless you.

I just looked at your vlog for 2016 when you had paid your house in 5 years. Good for you! I have 4 kids and they become more expensive as they grow older. We paid off our first home probably within the first 25 years. Sounds like a long time but we went through ups and down with employment plus we wanted to put the kids through college debt free. We recently bought another home and paid cash for it. So being in my early 60"s it feels great to have to have no bills. My children are actually paying for their homes much like you did. But then again their salaries are huge compared to what my husband and I made. The lesson I guess that needs to be learned is to spend beneath your means but still having the quality of life you want.

I don’t think most people think that way and very impatient with wanting a house filled with new items an don’t wait therefore spending money on credit and getting further in debt. It’s hard for people financially to begin with. You are proof that it is attainable but you have to work at it. I admire you. Good for you!!!

My husband and I have done the same, although we had children quite early on in our relationship we still managed to pay our mortgage off before our 40s. We had no fancy holidays till the kids we old enough to appreciate them, no posh cars and decor (its not needed) and if we wanted to splurge on an item we saved to pay for it. I feel these days people are to materialistic and incredibly wasteful.

So very smart in so many ways. We did the same. Every month we looked what we had in the bank and dumped it into the mortgage. That was called making a "principal only" payment; a payment over and above the regular monthly mandatory payment. We kept dumping two or three thousand monthly over and above until we got so close, and found another seven grand to be paid off by the new millennium. The saved interest dollars on the loan can add up to $50,000 easily that stays in your pocket, and more. So many people think they have to buy a huge house. They buy into the whole American dream, and they'd be foolish doing so. Huge houses are huge expenses in property taxes, repairs and upkeep. A new roof when the time comes is 20,000.

I am so inspired by this video! I am in my early 40’s already and my husband and I just bought our 3rd home a bit over a year ago. After a few months I realized we do not need so much space, the kids are grown up, have moved out and I want to downsize to do just this! I see us in a small rancher, no more than 2 bedrooms and priced low enough to pay off in a span of 5 years. I even had a tax plan idea! Except it took me 40 years to figure it out. I believe we still may have a chance. I think you’re planning a great future for your family. Thank you for sharing your story.

Lisa, you are a great inspiration for young couples and anyone who wants to be debt free. I am 62 and with my husband we became debt free over 20 years ago. And I can tell you that becoming debt free is one of the most important things that has happened in our life. After we became debt free we were able to save for our children's education and for our retirement, which we took early. We are frugal in our living expenses and have been able to save enough to now build our dream house and still be debt free. So many couples feel like they have to spend money to keep up with their friends lifestyle. They sacrifice their own freedom. We still use our credit cards, but pay them off each month. Anyone can do this, it takes discipline and determination. Thank you again and I do enjoy your KZread videos and blog.

Great video! Anyone who has PMI can request it to be dropped off the mortgage payment once the mortgage has dropped to 78% of the mortgage. Please note that this is something that you have to pursue yourself because the PMI companies will sit back and collect your money and not have a care in the world about doing it.

Thank you for sharing this🙏 Our home we owed $330k when we got married 3.5yrs ago and we put everything onto the house aside from some renovations around $60k, we only owe $85k now and will have it paid off in a year or so. There's a temptation to move to a more expensive area because my husband does have a high paying job... but I'm inspired to only pay cash next time. Interest rates are tipped to rise in Australia and I don't want the stress. Having a simpler affordable home means I only work 2 days a week and I could stay home if we have more children. A really easy way to save when we were a young couple both working was to save one person's wage (mine) and live off the husband's wage. This made it really easy for me to take 2 years off work when we had our two kids.

This video was so helpful! I have been a bit tentative about watching it because it seems out of reach. I am relieved that I did because I’m no lover judging myself. Where I live, within the very expansive city limits, any house of any quality is going to be at least $1M and the average rent of a 1br is currently $2260/month. I am relieved and empowered that you said the debt was $100k because I can strive to pay that amount off in that time too. I am not going to beat myself up about this but I love the inspiration to go debt free for future freedom. Thank you Lisa!
