I worked at a small machine shop in Colorado Springs. The owner (83 year old man) was equally meticulous as you are. I tore down and hot tanked parts. Then spend a hour going through every passage way, and bolt hole with a brush. I really learned a lot from Lambert. Cleanliness, and precision are a the key to long lasting engines.

Did you do full engine assembly as well? I love working on cars as a hobby and would love to build my own motor one day. I’m comfortable with doing just about anything other than bottom end teardown and rebuild. There’s so many little nuances you have to know when putting together an engine if you want longevity. How would you suggest learning without having to go to school or changing careers?

@@sethbrown5856 Honestly, I did all of the tear down on the engine block, and cylinder heads. I did a lot of magna fluxing, and pressure checking heads. I moved up to milling, and assembling heads. I did however completely rebuild a couple of Onan (in a John Deer rider mower). Plus a few old D Series John Deer engines. Almost all of our engine assembly was completed by the Senior builder who was a HUGE Volkswagen enthusiast.

I've been told by mechanics for years all rings spin untell they seat . Not mine . Lacker thinner clean the piston spotless. Face the rings 💍 where you want them . The object is so that any oil pulled up is on the torque side of the piston and chlender . Pin the rings in place in the middle of the ring with hy temp . First and second ring . No blow by at 200,000 miles engin will pull 24 inches mercury vacume . Crank case and chlenders totally sealed from each other . And by the way why do you rebuild it all without gapless rings made in Colorado Perfect Circle rings .??? .!

I'm a Machinist for high end aircraft manufacturing. I constantly am explaining manufacturing processes to other professions and people. The way you operate your shop is impressive as is your creator's content. .

I like this Shop Foreman! He is right to the point! And with most excellent tips and procedures! I would absolutely apply to work here, if I ever lost my current job! Hopefully not! But with this type of Operation, if I started at the bottom I would be cool with it because of all the interesting repairs going on. I'm not a truck guy, but I did actually work at a truck shop where we did lift kits every single day! I got stuck doing alignments...Let me tell you , I can align ANY lifted truck, jeep , and or rock crawler! Metal Cloak, Terraflex and Rough Country were the brands we saw and used in the shop. Great experience, but at 5'7 doing a set of 37" tires and lower control arms and lift kit, everyday was very tiring to say the least. But I loved it! Shout out to the Jeep named "Justified" ! Great Build by the owner!

Proper prep and clean is a must when building engines and transmissions. That is a service I would pay for if I didn't do my own work. He is honest with his customers and shows what happens with everything he does. Damn good man here.

You don't need a full paint booth for engine painting. It's a very small area and only takes one or two rattlecans.

But yes chemical paint is always better quality than spray can due to the nature of the chemicals that need to be used to save in a can for years on a shelf vs proper timed chemical release. I worked in a body shop for 4 years after college. It makes a difference

You can clearly seeing masking tape painted over, and the cardboard held over the cylinder holes is the most practical way to do it without wasting labor sealing them with plastic/tape. Did the job absolutely fine. Any threaded holes for bolts etc don't need to be covered, the paint may enter the thread but the bolt will clean it straight off and its not a concern.

​@@brenthernandez3632 You know paint is a soluble an nowhere nearly as hard a stainless bead shot. Any over spray that gets in critical spaces can easily be wiped out with acetone. A old hot rod trick for better oiling was to paint the lifter valley. But you have to use a specific paint.

in aviation we use glass beads that will just break before it wrecks anything. your way looks good too though 👍

I worked at a machine shop where we accidentally left a few of those purty little beads in the oil passages of an engine we built for a customer and you are exactly right…. It tore the crap out of the bearings. Warranty was on us and lessons learned!!!!!

Hmm... I don't know much on painting an engine, never done it, but wouldn't any paint that got onto the cylinder walls either scrape off or just help improve the fitment of the piston rings? Seems like paint wouldn't stand up to that and it'd just come right off...

Those are the same size bead that is in the injector for common rail. I used to build injectors and loved it. Was 1 of 2 certified to build Bosch injectors in my city

I’d be happy just to get an engine that had half the love these guys put into their work. I’m attempting to either rebuild my own 6.5 Detroit or swap it for a 24 valve in a OBS Blazer 1500. Pretty rare truck for Canada. It would be a dream if these guys had anything to do with it. Trust the experts.

I did that job for a while, really took pride in my work.

I’ve built more than a few motors and every block is taken outside to be washed and scrubbed. If you aren’t soaking wet when you finish, you didn’t wash it enough. Making sure there’s no bead blast material is a responsibility you should take on as the builder.

At Wrights Racing Engines, The blocks and parts get washed with high pressure soapy hot water... No matter how much you try you always come out drenched.

Unfortunately newer vehicles will require thousands of dollars of electronics be replaced before the block or heads will need to be worked on, mechanically totalling the vehicle. Not to mention EVs. There is just less and less demand for local machine shops as time goes on.

Oh god yes. It sucks that there are hardly any around and damn near none that are worth a damn or fairly priced. I've bought my own cnc, lathe, and other metal fab tools just due to a lack of machinists to go to causing the rest of them to charge insane amounts.

​@@WilC379Honestly if those electronics are built properly they shouldn't be going out for the life of the vehicle. Despite what manufacturers seem to believe now, circuitboards do not currently have parts that should be experiencing wear if they have components chosen to spec for the job. If something on a board breaks, a capacitor for example, its because some pencil pushing dickhead decided it's ok to use the peak ratings as the standard measure for component grade... Demand recalls of parts like that, they are lemons, and dont let cheapass manufacturers trick you into thinking otherwise.

If there’s one man I’d pay any amount to rebuild my motor it’s definitely this man he doesn’t lie he’s straight forward and backs up his work

One of those little shot beads is every oil pumps nightmare and its nothing to stop it from being pulled into it if it makes its way to the pan either, average pump screen has an 1/16 square screen unless its for a high volume pump then its bigger

Great showman, and as an engine builder, I can appreciate this, but when we do engines we clean every speck out of every surface of that block for a good foundation for final assembly when all the machining and cleaning is done. Additionally, I still block off some passages that are difficult to clean or hard to brush out because a Good machinist and engine builders take this to the next level so they don’t have to worry about it… Keep on rocking

he is right about that...i got a crank back from a machine shop from a grind i was having a crap day when i put the engine back together and compleatly forgot to blow out the crank passages engin lasted 2 days always keep your mind on your job when you are engine building

The shop I worked at used a dissolvable bead in the blaster with high heat ~100° below the melting point of the engine and then acid bath the engine to dissolve all the beads then ran a pressurized flush not to flush out extra material but to verify the integrity of the block through the oil and coolant passage

Aerospace Machinist here. Blowing out a hole like that is worthless. You must have a tube attached to the blow gun that goes all the way to the bottom of the hole and blow the crap up and out of the hole. I also worked in inspection and would fail parts for this all the time.

Agreed, just blowing out and brushing every hole is not a reliable means to clean out every last contaminant. I would be willing to bet he has left a few beads in every engine that were thankfully caught in the oil filter or ground up and caused damage that was not sever enough to kill the engine though obviously shortened it's lifespan.

@@Smartsometimes the long block was put on a Sim tester which supplies the long block with oil and rotate the crankshaft via electric motor. This is to check the compression and for proper oil flo. The single piece of shot made it 3/4 of a rotation before seizing up destroying the main journal and bearing.

Its why everyones moved away from steel shot, dry ice blasting and soda blasting. This fella isnt just living in 1989 hes way back in the 70s.

I usually set a piece of shot on each main bearing before i drop the crank in and bolt the caps on. That way it makes an oil groove for better lubrication. A dab of grease holds it in place.

Some years ago (I say 1979) a friend needed a small block rebuild. The friend was not a mechanic, he was a tree surgeon but he insisted on doing his own rebuild. We had access to a shop with a bead blaster. I don't recall the exact medium used but it was "bad" enough. The friend wanted to paint the cylinder heads up all nice. He used the bead blaster to clean the outside of the heads. OK, the time came to fire the engine up. It started immediately but died immediately. I spent a hour trying to get it to fire up. I came to the conclusion it had zero compression. I oiled up all the cylinders and sure enough it fired up and ran fine, for a while. After about 3 weeks the engine developed what sounded like a rod knock but then did not sound like a rod knock. After some more weeks the engine developed low oil pressure and a definite rod knock. Engine was torn down. Every bearing in the engine was destroyed. Even the cam bearings. The guy did not was the bead blast medium out of the cylinder head ports. Destroyed a new engine.

They need to write up a few new Western scripts for this guy play a role.

Here is one for you. I have found the reason for big blocks overheating ,at least in the 60's and 70's . I had a few of the rear soft plugs that I removed was filled with the casting sand still there. One of them ,my personal one had one completely plugged with the hardened yellow sand.
