How Watchmen BROKE Alan Moore | Explains
Фильм және анимация
Today on Total Nerd Comics, we'll explain the history of The Watchmen and how it almost destroyed Alan Moore. Watchmen is by far the most complex comic ever made. Does that mean it’s the best? Well, that’s in the eye of the beholder. But what can’t be argued about is that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons really put their all in Total Nerd Explainer: How Watchmen Broke Alan Moore.

Oh come on. He has sold the rights to ALL of his comics, then bitches when the movie ends up sucking. I LOVE his comics. Arguably the greatest comic writer of all time (to me he is easily the greatest and its not even close). But he’s an absolute prima donna when it comes to discussing the publicizing rights of his works.

Am a huge Moore fan BUT still think he was naive in trusting DC at all. Remember that this is the company that screwed over Siegel & Shuster, Bill Finger and many other creators out of their ownership rights in the 40s. Why did he believe that DC Comics would treat him any better???

ACTUALLY: The original idea for Watchmen used the Mighty Crusaders characters from Archie Comics. After they turned him down he returned to DC where he wrote the story with the Charlton characters before being told to create his own characters.

I liked the movie. I think many didn't because they watch it like cops, looking to write citations on anything that either deviates or doesn't properly honor their beloved source material. I haven't read Before Watchmen, but Doomsday Clock was really well done, and can be enjoyed by all if one is willing to get past preconceived notions and prejudices ... The HBO series was really well done as well! I just wish there was a season 2.

So far I've liked everything watchmen. Missed reading a few issues of before and doomsday but the movie was one of my favorites and the tv show was a lot of fun
On the bright side, Superman never actually punches Dr. Manhattan... who Mary-Sued his way through the entire Justice League.
*I won't call it a regret buuuuut I saw Watchmen at the comic book store and* I stared at the cover and thought "anyone can draw and make a comic book." I had a chance to buy this series when it first came out but it didn't look finished or glossy like DC or Marvel superhero comics so I passed over it. After the movie, I bought a trade paperback of the originals and realized it was a good story. The movie looks good however it didn't get the comic at all. I wonder if it's deliberate in order to make the movie OR a shortcoming of Snyder and friends who misunderstand nuances in writing over the cool picture panels.
To be honest, I love Zach Snyder's Watchmen as equally as I love the books. Yes Snyder tried to be as faithful as he could (or allowed) but I understand why chances were necessary. That makes it a great companion piece to the graphic novel. I haven't watched the series, though.

I think when you view the film through the lens of Snyder trying to make up for not being able to represent the whole novel by adding in parody and satire on the superhero movie genre as well, it makes it more palatable; it does the same thing the novel sought to do to comics, but apply it to film making. It's not on the level of the comic but it's honestly the best we couldve hoped for out of an adaptation. I believe the film makes more sense and can be enjoyed too, as a companion.

Comic publishing is almost entirely work-for-hire. You're quite simply lying to suggest that DC told Alan Moore he owned it. Even Moore admits he didn't know what he was signing.

Rorschach was a lot more Paleocon then Neocon, makes sense seeing as he's based on such an old character.
10:14 I hate to correct you, but I'm going to... the pin-up books and trading cards were earlier than you're talking about (circa 1994-95). The market crash didn't effect Wildstorm in a significant way until a few years later. That's when Wildstorm did the Heroes Reborn stuff for Marvel.... Shortly after that was the sale of Wildstorm to DC. At least that's how I remember it when I worked there...

05:40 hadn't heard of this
In an interview in the comics journal back int he 80s Moore said he was approached to do something with the old characters
So the guy who voices Solid Snake wanted to write a screenplay for Watchmen
It's wild to me that sin city is haled as being amazing because of its dedication to the sorce material, and alot of people argue that same attention to detail, save one giant man killing alien, is maligned for the same thing
It amazes me how these publishers so badly treat their talent.
God, i still wish it was the silver age.
I once heard a rumor that alanine Dave actually DID make a proof of concept an issue 1 essentially of watchmen where it had the original charlton comics character in this same rumor I heard that this copy is supposedly in the possession of Dave gibbons
I still think that if those "artists" really cared about other artists and people, they wouldn't have worked on "before watchmen" unless the rights reverted back to morre and gibs. Of course then dc would try to find other people to do their bidden but if everyone said no then they would have to. I've never watched the show but I hope it failed and I'm sure it did cause I haven't heard anyone talk about it, ever.
Gee, who would have seen that coming...I once as a ten year old watched Saturday Night Live, with Howard Cosell, when he showed in the audience after a Fleischer cartoon, Joe Siegle and Jerry Shuster as they were old and half blind and poor. After that low rated show, DC relented and gave them a stipend in their declining years, and with the proviso, if ABC ever showed that show again, or the Tommarow show with Neal Adams who championed them, they'd be censored out lest the old men still be left penniless. Yes, I'd love to have your take on being woke, fellows... @DCCOMICS
1:36 wait which British Invasion?
Adapting the work of others is great for privately learning your craft without having to deal with the creativity aspects quite so much. You can even share the adaptation with other artisans so they might critique your technique. At the very most, you might allow the creator of the original medium to see your interpretation of their work. But once you are ready to become a commercial artist, you need to create your own ideas that embrace the strengths and limitations of your particular medium. Watchmen is a college course in how to utilize the medium of comics. Adapting it to another medium is stupid. If you want to make a movie as good as Watchmen, make a new story that embraces the strengths of film.
The HBO series was pretty good, though.
An Aries Cusp And Scorpio Cusp created..."THYS" .... fascinating
Moore blessed Gilliam's adaptation because "mostly money"? How does that square with his attitude towards all other adaptations of his work?
Supreme is a masterpiece. It takes the silver age Superman, Supergirl, and other DC characters and makes it worse. In my opinion, it is the greatest Superman story ever told. His work for Image was excellent, but it wasn't as good as Watchmen and Supreme. And League of Extraordinary Gentleman is as good was Watchmen it its own way.
I dont understand why people complain about the Watchmen movie its beautiful. its action sequences are so unique compared to every other action movie. Despite the obvious plot armour and good guys wading through hordes of bad guys, the way its filmed and framed makes it tense, exciting and impactful, unlike every other capeshit movie out there. Its kinda weird rewatching that movie in 2022 after seeing the latest marvel releases. How perfectly choreographed the fight scenes to a point where any element of danger or excitement or even aesthetic beauty is just pushed out in favour of clever quips and funny character dialogue as tehy mow down hordes of faceless mooks or have a perfectly predictable stand off between the hero and the villain. Whereas in Snyder's movie, the action sequences always have a purpose, they explore the different aspects of the characters, every frame an art piece and honestly, its a faithful adaptation of the comic book. There's really no way to fit a 12 issue comic book into a 2 hour long film, at least not in a better way. anyone
You’d really think that any comic artist they approached to work on Before Watchmen with the full knowledge that Alan Moore doesn’t approve would have turned them down or insisted on showing it to Moore first. To think that they found a dozen people willing to compromise their artistic ethics like that is sort of depressing.

So in other words, Synder and Moore had opposite worldviews?
Watchmen movie was great! Not as an adaptation, but as his own thing, yes!
I'm here with Alan - it was one time gig, but Dead Company couldn't resist the temptation of milking this golden goose to the point of puke... HBO's series is just awfull disaster, and good it ended soon enough. Prequels are ok, I refuse to touch Rorchach by Tom King - he's too many 'miss the target' guy for me.
Before Watchmen was mostly terrible and Doomsday Clock was alright, but constant delays hurt it badly. However, the TV show was phenomenal and it received 26 Emmy nominations. So it wasn't all bad.

You first sentence of the video. "in the eye of the beholder " exactly thats how you should look at things & not make ugly faces at other human beings just coz they made a movie which you personally didn't like. In short practice what you preach
That didn't age well
Honestly, by now I'm tired of Alan Moore's complaining. Sure, he's a good writer, but he's not as good as even he thinks he is. He should never have signed the Watchman contract as it was given to him. That doesn't make it right for DC to take advantage but... Moore has worked steadily for a long time regardless of this. Which is more than many other writers in the medium can say. And you said at the end something like everyone being dicks to one another, it's clear you really didn't mean "everyone". Soo this video ends up being just one more one-sided piece. What would have been more interesting would be a piece playing "devil's advocate" and trying to look at it from another angle. Unfortunately making interesting videos is rarely what ScreenCrush is about anymore.
