If I were to list my excitement levels for the Disney+ MCU series, WandaVision would have been at the bottom of the list. As a fan of Wanda from the comics, I hadn’t felt like the movies made ample use of her character, her interesting history as a character, or really made her powers make sense in the grand scheme of things.
Man, I love it when I’m wrong.

I empathize to this SO MUCH! I lost my entire immediate family(mom, sis, brother, grandma) in the last 6 years, the last being my brother during COVID, so not only did the show and that line resonate with me it was cathartic on a level I never imagined! I seriously don’t get the weird backlash to that line in the slightest. I don’t find it cringey, silly or trite, for me it is beautiful and 100% true!

Same with me. Last year my fiancé died suddenly on a Thursday morning. Exactly one week later, on the morning of his funeral, my mom died. To say 2020 was a horrible year is an understatement. Anyhoo, the entire WandaVision series, and that line in particular about grief being love persevering, was so cathartic for me. There is no doubt WandaVision came out at the perfect time for so many of us to help us cope with so much loss.

I've never found Jean Grey to be boring. In fact, she's one of my favorite characters. I think most (but not all) people that dislike her are heavily influenced by the 90s animated series, in which she's not represented very well. 80s X-Factor, 90s X-Men Gold, and even the recent X-Men Red series, portray Jean as a strong, self-assured character in ways that have nothing to do with her powers (or even the Phoenix Force, for that matter). She's had a history of misfortune (being essentially replaced by both a cosmic entity AND a Mr. Sinister-created clone, meeting a teenager daughter from a hellish alternate timeline while she is still relatively young herself, telepathically experiencing the death of her best friend as child, etc). She has proven to be a character that takes the worst that fate, and editorial mandate, has thrown her way, and rises to meet the challenge. *I know this is a Wanda Maximoff thread, but to piggyback off of this comment, I agree. Jean, IMHO, is far from boring.*

Chris Claremont changed comics for so many people. As a kid going through the back issues into the X-men comics he wrote, Claremont could introduce diverse characters and make them feel valuable, human, and seen like nothing else I encountered at that age. Through Kitty, Storm, Jean, Kurt, Northstar, the Morlocks, and so many more he was able to broaden not only who could been seen as a hero and that those characters could posses flaws and a sense of humanity just as interesting as their powers.

@@ihatetheheat4524 Here’s the thing about black republicans. If you’re an American descended from chattel slaves, there are some problems that the federal government has to fix. That’s going to require big government. Big like it was when it made decisions about social responsibility which created Green new deal, HUD and FHA loans that led to redlining and codified Jim Crow laws. It can’t be a handout; its a debt that’s owed for the institution of slavery that propelled early American economy, Jim Crow, and carceral states that don’t get near enough media attention. The entire black population in some major white cities is all in prison. Now, if you (like far too many blacks) believe black Americans are in the perilous economic situation (primarily or significantly) because of our mistakes I have some recommended readings and data to show you. Every ethnicity has people doing the same stuff black Americans do, but our image has been propagandized beyond reality. I’m not saying vote Democrat, though. Especially at the top of the ticket. But in terms of being united, we are the swing vote. Right or wrong, 88-90% of blacks are voting consistently. No other ethnicities show these voting patterns. Not latinos, not minorities, not women. Black men and women just need to unite over policy, specifically, policy that explicitly benefits them. The notion of that policy can’t be laughable, either. Well, you just won’t be a celebrated, and supported female black politician. Like Kamala. So, basically something like reparations for Guam during Obama’s presidency, Native American reparation and land allocation, ongoing reparations for Jews, the AAPI legislation, or DACA etc-but much more robust due to the debt from the initial institution of American chattel slavery.

I'm BIPOC and was cheering Danaerys on. Her tone was less colonizer than John Brown from the start and the only time she ever did her job well was when she was sacrificing her ambition to end slavery and injustice. It was definitely a white savior narrative, but it was also relevant that her closest advisors were native PoC, not white people. And Tyrion, the guy wagging his finger at her, *defended the fighting pits* and tried to sell Mereen *back into slavery.* The show even lampshades the contrast between Tyrion bringing Westerosi pragmatism to Essosi lives and Danaerys sacrificing her privilege to wield her power for people without any with Grey Worm and Missandei turning against him. Also, one of the biggest insults is how much agency was stolen from Missandei and Grey Worm to drive Danaerys mad.

I think it would have been great if people started insisting Dany was mad based on her "break the wheel: end class hierarchy in all forms" goal instead of "she uses a dragon instead of a sword to execute people". When Dany kills Sam's brother and father, she is doing so because they are insisting they will never surrender in their effort to maintain their power as feudal lords. She offered them an honorable out, admit having been wrong and join team "anti-serfdom", and they pass. So why is this a sign of madness but Ned Stark executing a man for fleeing the literal apocalypse that is the White Walkers is part of him being honorable? The answer is obvious: Ned was upholding the hierarchy, Dany was opposing it.

Similar to Paul Atreides, she's a deconstruction of the trope in many ways. Part of her unraveling was due to buying into her own myth. The all-too-human savior becomes a cult of personality figure, the cult goes to her head and she forgets that she's not divine retribution but just a human with political power who was doing something constructive with it before she got obsessed with it becoming her identity.

They could add back in the element of Wanda being Romany if they wanted, though. Her parents struck me as cut from the same kind of cloth as Wanda, taking comfort in the sitcoms from America to wall out the way they were forced to live. They wouldn't be the first to renounce a rich heritage and/or eschew it altogether as a source of pain and suffering, as well as making survival in the present much harder. Her Romany heritage could be a facet Wanda rediscovers during her journey back to health, that gives her a renewed purpose.

In fact it’s very common that underprivileged country’s would take comfort in sitcoms as it represented a better & safer world. Plus that’s the only form of television they would really have access to. It’s actually how many people learned English. No matter what race Wanda was/is it still makes total sense (considering where she grew up) that she would take comfort in these comfortable shows regardless of the color of their skin.

One thing I liked about WandaVision is that the sitcom tropes were explicitly depicted as an unhealthy microcosm of the world that forced people into artificial roles that robbed them of individuality and agency, and Wanda's own culpability in creating that toxic environment was emphasized. There was the layer of nostalgia and kitsch, but there was always an unsettling undercurrent to it. So I appreciated that. I do like that even though they explored the 'woman loses her mind' cliche, the actual story was about why she lost her mind, how she lost her mind, and how she found the will to come out of it to become an at least slightly healthier version of herself. Wanda is a person who has suffered a lot of loss, and you can totally see why she would want to lose herself in a fantasy LARP. She's been abused and manipulated by all but a few people in her life, and even in her sitcom world, she continues to be abused and manipulated by Agnes. In the end, when faced with the reality of what she had done, and the reality of her fantasy family, Wanda chose to face reality. She did not, however, try to make amends to anyone, so there's that. But I don't think Wanda is supposed to be a cookie-cutter Good Person™ who becomes whole and healthy and fullly enlightened. She's always going to have that grief and rage inside her.

If she ever does makes amends, it actually might be better to wait so all the hostilities and bitterness can cool off. Plus, well, she LEFT Agnes there among them, I mean... that's not making amends but it's just not possible to do that if you're leaving a ticking time bomb behind you. If Agnes ever becomes Agatha again and she's still living in town, those people are in deep shit. Yeah, especially since the show told two stories, Wanda's and hers. Monica's story was about coming to terms with this new world, and with taking a stance against solving every issue with weapons. Granted, a proper confrontation with director Dick would have put this across even more. Honestly, I think she was protective of Wanda mostly on principle, and because she had felt her griev. Thank you for this. I was suspicious of Wandavision having the odor of "females with power only do bad things while experiencing emotions! Rein them back into the calming structure of white patriarchy!" Bringing the comic book version of Jean Grey and her autonomy into it really helped. I've had an idle wonder when male superheroes experience intense, overwhelming emotions, how often are they given outs, considered complex or "chequered pasts" but we can still celebrate them. Whereas women with power are polarized into stricter roles. Have to think more on that. I agree, it would have been interesting to see Monica get therapy for post-Blip life and the loss of her mom (how would they have wedged that in? Dunno but that's a screenwriter's problem) because A) it would be good to see someone on screen getting legit, quality therapy to help normalize it (FatWS has it, but Bucky does better with Sam's informal counseling than his sanctioned and antagonistic therapist); B) to contrast how much Wanda could have benefited from the same but no one offers her any, EVER, except Vision and Monica. Vision is fine only because he's a former hyper intelligent AI with access to the world's psychological training - kinda MCU's Baymax - but expecting your partner or a random person who has gone through similar grief as the only support mechanisms? Boo.

Instead of reveling in her self-determination and power, she goes mad with grief and ends up changing her name in the infamous novel Forsaken. Shame is now a prominent part of her character, as you can see in Confront the Past. Of course, guy characters like Jace felt no such emotion although they arguably have done more that’s shameful. I have tried to call out this sexist trope, with minimal success. Likely you could do a better job.

I haven't seen anyone take on Monica's part in all this either and I'm unfamiliar with her as someone who never engaged with a lot of Captain Marvel material so this troubled history with how she's been misused as a character is great to know. Thank you so much for this video!

Great video. Just one thing. It isn't really a generational that killed (heh) the death of characters in comics. It's trademark. You have to keep a character in publication once every few years to keep the trademark for the character active. At one point, Marvel tried to do this one year by publishing what amounted to a character encyclopedia, but usually they just bring the characters back from the dead for a story arc to keep their ownership of the characters active.

It seems like the only "accountability" they intended for Wanda was her suffering more grief, which feels like empty punishment to me and wasn't satisfying at all. I (naively) assumed Monica would have a large part in "defeating" Wanda, while still maintaining her empathy for her. That would have been a really interesting way to recognize that Wanda isn't evil, necessarily, but her actions are wrong. It was really disappointing to see her pretty much erased from the climax and then show up just to forgive Wanda completely. Like, there's more depth to forgiveness, accountability and empathy than that, but the show didn't seem to be interested in exploring that the way they did the grief that led to Wanda's actions.

it screamed "we ran out of time or money" to me. the show was very clearly building monica up to be the hero of the situation. i absolutely think they intended more for her. i don't even really give a shit about how shows dole out "accountabilty" or "punishment", i was just feverishly excited to see her and wanda have some cathartic moments where they talk about their trauma and get to know eachother. i wanted them to end up understanding eachother, and gain something from that, mutually. i mean, it would make sense, considering monica's powers seemed basically activated by wanda's, but of course instead of reconciling that she got a lame sidekick moment protecting the kids.

@@TheRandomzcookie Oh absolutely, by accountability, I just mean that it felt like the show tried to balance out Wanda's harmful actions by making her suffer more, which was like... ok... how does that help anyone who was trapped in Westview? Like Monica? And it was very weird for Monica to exist basically just as a mouthpiece for that choice, just to be like "Nah you're good, you suffered!" I didn't want to see Wanda suffer more, nor did I feel like Monica's empathy was showcased by her being like "You're fiiiiine, you lost your kiiiids." If you want another interesting (read: horrifying) way in which art handles or mishandles the “mad woman” trope, it’s presentation across centuries of opera is worth looking at. As far back as the Italian Renaissance, you had mad scenes with women (presented through relatively modern music) observed before and after by male characters, presented through very “stable” and traditional music. Composers tended to put more attention into the music of the mad scenes, since they were allowed extreme latitude in how adventurous the music could be, as long as everything was returned to “normal” by a male observer. Skip ahead to the early 20th century, where the female character ends up being the one the composer is so much more interested in that they end up actually killing the men trying to keep them under control. Of course, it’s all grotesque, start to finish, but a really interesting illustration of art pushing against these sorts of gender constraints in an unbroken arc away from them, whether or not the composers realized it or not. Of course, every other thing about western opera is so problematic that it can be tough to separate the issues from each other (there was an opera by R Strauss written specifically to argue against the push for women’s rights), there’s still some food for thought there.

Really cool video - I kinda disagree about them completely erasing Wanda's none power otherness though. While her being a Roma would make her more obviously an 'other', Sokovia comes across an ex-soviet country with alot of Serbian undertones. Serbs are an ethnic group that has faced lot of persecution and have experienced genocide. Wanda is clearly hiding parts of herself to fit in more to her sitcom world - for example, she only speaks with her accent when not in the hex and fake Pietro points out that she's hiding her accent. She's hiding the obvious parts of her otherness.

Loved WandaVision, definitely more interesting to have a more character centric series and building that. Yea, i was hoping they'd do more with Monica, but as a 'set up' for what i hope they do with her later it was okay. She definitely needs to get into a power-fight with her Dad Carol... sorry Disney, as a military brat, 90s kid and now vet, I KNOW those signs... 'best friend' my ass -.- yea, that leads to a 'bad' trope, little twisted on its head, of black kid with missing 'dad' but i kinda hope they do something more with her character in Captain Marvel 2, and hopefully her taking back the name and solving some of the issues there >.> id like to see her be the MC there and further development as she had a stronger build up here as an opening, and theres enough reason to do so... buuuuuut... this is now disney and the MCU *shrugs* The end of WV did seem like it was missing a lot, but what was there was still good, way better than i thought~ And personally i LOVED the overt whiteness it basically laid out with the sitcoms... cause it was AWKWARD AS HELL XD i feel it was meta showing how awkward that 'silent' racism was, but well, thats just my opinion~ especially with how everyone else was weirded out by Geraldine but Wanda just all 'okay' till things... which kinda shows how awkward prior opinions vs. Modern opinions on overly white media is... its just... weird, looking back, and at modern stuff that sticks to that 'safe' format. Its strange and awkward cause thats not how things are now... or again could just be the bend of my lens~ Again, wish there was more on some bits but feels more me nitpicking then other series, so thats good~

I feel like Monica and Carol avoids the “black kid with missing dad trope” because that trope is usually just a racist jab about black men being lazy absentee fathers, while also mocking the child for having “daddy issues.” With these two, Carol isn’t a black man, and Monica isn’t being mocked for being angry that she was gone. They seem to acknowledge it was wrong for Carol to abandon her, even though Carol is overall a good person she still did something wrong. And Monica is sympathized with.

I have an idea for reversal of stories of this kind: that a man who feels emasculated and threatened by women’s progress gains a lot of power, like Wanda and Jean, and embraces violence. That it is not a woman who gained power and became "crazy", but an entitled *man* who gained power and behaved violently. Say in the case of the Dark Phoenix saga: that instead of Jean, it's Scott or Logan who become villains, because they feel threatened by non-submissive women. I've realized that this is nearly identical to the plot of Tighten from Megamind

as always, your takes are like a breath of fresh air. also, the point you made about believability taking precedence in your mind over how stories dole out punishment or accountability is something i particularly relate to a lot. like, to me, punishment often feels contrived in a story if it seems like it's just... yknow, karma coming back to bite someone in the ass, against all odds, just so the narrative can make it clear that "doing what that person did is bad!" it sometimes detracts from a stories ability to fully explore an issue and start interesting, important coversations-- which, for all it's faults, is something wanda vision absolutely succeeded at doing. it forces us to ask questions about our impotence in the face of trauma, how we react to that, how we can try to overcome it and take control of ourselves, which is imo extremely relevant for the world we live in, specifically in relation to how we can traumatize eachother even by accident (which is, again, extremely relevant to a world mired in hypervigilance, overreactive internet culture, etc, all affecting irl communication skills and ability to understand the people around us). and at this point i'm going off track, but i was just gonna say that the analysis of narratives in the context of similarly "modern" problems is exactly what i watch this channel for. i mean, for example, it was refreshing to hear u give focus to monica when the vast majority of discourse i've seen has been about the hollow "is wanda bad or good?" question. thank you so much!

Yeah the ending was a huge yikes for me. It just isn't logical. Obviously yes, she sacrificed her fantasy world. But that's like telling a kidnapper ''I know it's really hard for you. Your victims, who you held chained in your basement will never know how tough it is to let them go free and how much you sacrifice by doing so.'' Also, the townspeople would run for their lives while crying and/or screaming. Because they are terrifying. Because Wanda is a terrifying woman who has taken them hostage and taken their autonomy away. Having your autonomy taken away is much worse than a lot of other horrible fates, and I thought they would explore that more and really show the suffering she caused, but instead we got a couple of teases (crying halloween lady, the boss' wife and lady who begs in the few seconds she can speak to let her kid out of her room for once so she can see her again.) They just could have done so much more to emphasize how horrible what Wanda did was, and instead they went with ''feel bad for the kidnapper''
