How Vejas Became SO Popular
VEJA shoes are a viral sneaker brand with a cult-like fanbase and we wanted to know if they live up to the hype, all their claims about saving the planet, and why they aren’t the easiest shoes to find in stores. Here’s what we found out.

"Veja" means "see" as in "see this" (hence the name of the magazine which is like Time magazine in the US). The "J" in Veja is pronounced like the J is "déJà vu" - not like the way it was said in this video; it's a Portuguese word, not a Spanish word.
For the people saying they never heard of it, at least in Northern Europe they’re quite popular
“I asked our writers to figure out what the hell was going on with this company” That’s gotta be the biggest flex ever, not having to dig so deep into things yourself every time anymore. Now you can just get the writers you hired to do it. You’ve definitely made it for sure. Love the video!

Love how much of your personality and how much you battled yourself to justify buying them 😂 very fun and relatable (as a Veja sneaker owner myself, I love them and they were exactly what I wanted for a clean, smart sneaker for everyday wear to school, internship, and going out).
I bought my first and only Veja pair in 2018-ish in LA. The pair lasted for a year or so. Up until this video, I didn't realize they were into eco and sustainability. I remember them being kinda good but a bit rigid. IIRC I was the only one in a big tech office to wear this brand. Literally nobody considered Veja a luxury or an upscale product.

In France Veja’s are basically the go-to sneakers of the people we call « bobo » (can be translated by bohemian upperclass?). As a 20 year-old sneakerhead (but I stopped buying because of environmental issues, I have enough pairs) 130€ is comparable to what Nike and Adidas is doing for the main line so I don’t really consider them as luxury but rather not cheap. As you mention there definitely is a social status associated to Veja but I believe in some circles it is quite negative (lots of people see them as Parisians that don’t know the reality of life outside of city and rule the lives of farmers while not having stepped in dirt once) Maybe the way to change that is to embrace other designs to touch via their products rather than the impact of the V, as it isn’t universal as Nike or Adidas

I live in Paris too, and I confirm Veja is typically worn by the basic generic Parisian bobo that is somewhat close minded and really influencable by the upper class paradigm. I usually roast some of my friends that are trying to buy better designed and more creative sneakers by calling them Veja heads lmao. But it's all love and fun tho. People can wear whatever rock their boat, but I feel like Veja is kinda suffering the Alexander McQueen treatment . Like you can have decent products but the core of their client is really considered annoying and arrogant, so that makes a lot of people dislike the product because of that.
@lucas_lbn483

@@paprikafinesser Lol I forgot about those Alexander McQueens dudes indeed! Maybe it's some typical French behavior of judging and caring almost more of who is wearing rather than the product in itself (same goes in music/ films/ art) but it definitely limits the impact of the brand on the people who may not be enough sensibilized on sustainability

Thank you for this video. I know this brand for a while but don't possess any shoes. I kinda disagree with the fact that those are "luxury shoes". Buying shoes between $150 and $250 is not cheap I agree (especially if you compare to second-hand), but it's a regular price for ethical shoes. And even is I buy most of my stuff second-hand, some people need to buy new and support those brands for them to survive (we see so many good and ethical brands die just because they don't sell enough... that's the law of business). I feel like in your video, it's a bad thing that celebrities wear those shoes, and that the brand has success. I think it's the total opposite: promoting an ethical brand that has done a lot of efforts (even before ethical fashion was a trend), is a good thing. And even if "rich people" buy those shoes for the style and the image, it's better than to buy Nike. It's good that you make more videos about good and ethical brands, but those video don't always need to have so much "yes, but" if ethic is at the core of the brand 😉
My 2 pairs of Vejas were worth the spend, they are sustainable and I wear them everyday as part of my minimalist wardrobe😊
I got my pair of Vejas in 2020 because they were one of the few environmentally friendlier sneakers available, and honestly I LOVE them. They’re the shoes I wear when I don’t know what else to wear because they go with everything & are very comfortable. The leather makes them very water resistant, almost waterproof, so they’re my pseudo rain shoes as well. They were so worth the price I paid, even if they were initially slightly pricier!

But I don’t want to be without a pair, so I just got their replacements because it is coming up on their time :) but bear in mind these truly are my beater shoes- I’ve soaked them in seawater a year ago, they’re my rain shoes as mentioned, I don’t undo the laces and just shove them on carelessly; I’m not careful with them at all, so they have been through a lot! i live in brazil, and first pair i got was in 2017 i think (still have it). got it in a small slow fashion shop. their whole marketing here is designed in France, made in brazil. it was very converse-like (the model). Levi is pronouncing the name incorrectly. The brand name, as spoken by their own founders, is basically the pronounciation we have in Portuguese: Veja [veʒɐ]. And the brand is sold in Brazil as "Vert" (green in French), because of the issues pointed out by @DeuTa010 here.

There are a few sneaker brands designed to be repaired. They typically use blake stitch or stitchdown construction to allow the sole to be removed and replaced. Goral and Crown Northampton do this with all their shoes, Allen Edmonds does it with one of their sneakers
I used to have a pair. They were fine; the sole seemed like it was pretty tough rubber, but the suede uppers kinda fell apart faster than I expected. Also my massive wide flipper feet were maybe not what they had in mind.

After my first pair of Veja’s, I’m never going back to shoes that are glued together.
This was the first time i heard about this brand, but when levi mentioned the if you know you know mentality i cant stop myself from laughing because here in Hungary if u wear a shoe with a V on the side. Everybody assumes its a Victory shoe (Victory is the cheapest of cheap chinese shoe you can buy, basically an offbrand nike, vans, adidas copy)
They do make good quality shoes 👍
From what I can tell, they’re basically very similar designs to old school models from the big companies like the Nike Blazer, Nike Air Force One, and the Jordan 1, but at the same price point as a Made in America New Balance 990. I’ll admit to being intrigued; it honestly depends on how the leather is colored. If it’s coated in a thicc layer of plastic like most big shoe brands that use colorful leather, I’m less inclined to get them since that will not last very long, but if they’re simply coated in pigment instead… I am more interested.
Never heard of this brand but like the shoe in the thumbnail. Will prob end up getting a pair. Good 🔌
I never even considered that buying used shoes as being the best sustainable option. I will def do that moving forward.

Honestly I liked the idea of Veja, buuuuuuuut I'm poor. Instead of snagging a pair for myself, I found myself really digging into Cariuma before I committed to buying my Razer edition OCA lows. They seem to be a genuinely ethical brand (per Good On You giving them an overall "Good" score) with a lot of cool partnerships that appeal to gamers, art fans, etc. Also mostly based out of Brazil (as far as I'm aware) and more/less deserve their own video as an alternative to Veja that's about 1/2 the cost 👀. I don't wanna pat Cariuma on the back too hard for now, but I think they're playing the "sustainable style game" fairly well.
I love the existential debate 😂 It makes me feel less guilty of wanting one
I got a pair of Veja Campos last year and it took 4 months and a lot of manipulation to break in. But I do love the quality.
I've downloaded those certificates and read them. Not going to claim that I red all of them, but I definitely read some of them lol The shoes are disappointingly uncomfortable at this price point. I don't know that I'd call them luxury though. This is how much mainstream brands are, they just don't diffuse to Walmart. Not cheap, but luxury sneakers are easily $400+

The fact that they have so completely hijacked Levi's consciousness 13:10 is a testament to their value as a company and the bamboozling fact that they are indeed a consumable good.
I just bought my second pair , I have the running shoes and the normal ones. I actually wanted to buy them second hand in a very popular second hand app in Germany, Vinted, but I was scammed there. Everyone wants to buy them so scammers use the app to post fake pictures and “sell” the shoes and never send them. Really sad. 😢 but the shoes are very good quality indeed. Would love your insight and consultancy on how to build a shoe brand. How do we proceed?!
own 2 pairs - a venturi and a v-12. they're really good. i stopped looking at other sneaker brands.
I had my first pair of Veja (Esplar) in 2018 for 80€ and until now they are good. They are not really very comfortable, imho. But they are my go-to-shoes for short errands for almost 6 years. I got my second pair (V-12) two years ago as a gift, and I love them so much (super comfortable) I almost wear them everyday until a little stitching went loose on the shoe folds. I got them repaired for free in a Veja Store last November and now they’re good as new!😃 Veja offers Clean and Repair Service for a fee and sometimes for free during Black Friday. I wear them because I feel comfortable in them. I don’t have so many sneakers (only 3 pairs) so I buy what I think will hopefully last.
I bought my first pair of Veja in May, 2022 and it only lasted for 5 months! The sole started to decompose ever since! The final day I wore them... it was on a rainy day and the pair was like a sunken ship - flooded with rain water! What's even worse is that they became super stinky after that rainy day !
I'm on my second pair of Veja. They are fine, if I can wear pair of shoes day to day for different occasions for over three years, I'm happy. It's not a luxury sneaker, you can find them for $140 (CAD). Would I buy third pair? Probably. Vans are falling apart after couple of months, I'm done with them.
I feel like Levi is heavily hinting at someone buying him a pair of these shoes. 😂He seems really torn about wanting a pair of these shoes as well.😆

My experience (going on my 4th pair) is unfortunately that despite the materials the quality isn’t as high as it should be. My experience is that the sole is worn down within a year despite wearing multiple pairs 🥲
Sneakers don’t have to be a non reparable product meant to throw away. The swiss brand Künzli makes sneakers (beside of orthopedic shoes for people with injuries, etc.) that actually can be repaired and are repaired by the makers. My husband got a pair of sneakers from them more than 15 years ago. They have been repaired a few times now and still look good. They are not on the cheap side, although they are not produced in Switzerland anymore. Still they are made in Europe with sustainable materials and can last for many many years if cared for and repaired.
The youngest child joke really crake me up 😂
someone gifted me this shoe a few years ago but i was so unaware of this brand that i only wore them once or twice. actually, everyone was saying it's a ladies shoe; so, i stopped wearing them instantly and threw them in garbage.
They are actually good shoes. I did not know about the company when I first purchased them a few years back. I was attracted to the "clean" design and color of the "V", in this case the ox blood red. However, these are not luxury sneakers only the price. They lasted just under a year and I have not purchased another pair as paying $175 USD is not really worth it.

Outside of vegan dressy shoes for work ($99 from the brand Vance on zappos), I try not to spend a lot on shoes ($50-$60) since I do tend to wear them until they break. It would be interesting if a shoe company did some kind of end of life return program what Apple is doing with old iPhones where they are dismantled and shredded/melted down to be reused somehow.
Every video on this channel is like "why is X so popular", me never having heard of X but then spotting X everywhere.
I owned a pair and really wanted to make them work. But the outer sole was so thin that my heels were in agony after walking for more than 15 minutes. I finally parted with them when the fabric between the outer sole and the inside of the shoe ripped and the smell of the rubber just lingered once you took the shoes off. Bought this pair in 2020; maybe they have improved by now.
Saw these for the first time on Sydney a while back. Haven't really heard of the brand back then and ended up getting some Jordans instead.
The moment when you watch the latest Future Proof's video and realizes the video is about a company from my country (Brazil) that I never heard of before but, apparently and based on the comments here, is kinda popular.
Every time I see someone wearing some of these, I mistake them for Vuori, the athleisure clothing brand, since the logos look so similar.
Would be good to make similar video about Hoka too
Sadly my vejas were falling apart at the seams after 1.5 years which was too soon for my tasty and the price… otherwise I agree with everything that was said. Greta video!
Fun fact, here in Brazil they are called Vert not Veja, because in here we have a big Cleaning products company named Veja, so the shoe Veja couldn't be registered.
I feel like you should make a video about Asics/ onitsuka tiger, the brand is really having a moment and gas a real interesting history
Would like to see your take on Allbirds
Ridiculous to spend $200 on a pair of sneakers. It is all about status and has little to do with sustainability. I'll buy a paid of $40 Tretorns and get the same look. Btw - Tretorn should sue Veja for stealing their V branding.
"Why are Vejas SO Popular?" I've literally never heard of this brand.
I'm going to wait for Roser Anvil to cut a pair of Vejas in two and then decide if I will buy or not a pair.
People who don’t know about sneakers and want to go fashion usually buy these
I used to own a pair but sold them because they didnt even last a few months. While I applaud the vision, the quality needs some serious work. Whats the point of buying one when you have to buy another pair after half a year? Also, there seems to be a lot of fakes around which could be detrimental to the brand.
I bought a pair a few years ago but found them uncomfortable, at the sole was too thin. Hopefully the new owner is having a better time.
See these shoes multiple times everyday here in Amsterdam, i even thought the brand was Dutch
Is their 'organic cotton' really low intensity when it comes to water use?
I was expecting AllBirds to be featured since I feel they’ve been hyped more than Vejas when techbros embraced them back in 2014.
I was able I thrift some $10 Vejas in Edmonton of all places, always worth checking out thrift shops especially in Victoria, I’d expect some gold to be there😅
In high school, I purchased a pair of gym shoes from Payless. All plastic and virtually indestructible, still had them years after I married and wore them around the cattle and horses I fed and rode every day. They never wore out! Finally, after having my daughter, they got a bit uncomfortable cause my shoe size changed. Should have had them bronzed, you know, plastic fantastic.

i'm saying this because i understand your comment to be praise of an "all plastic" shoe that is "virtually indestructable". them being long-lasting isn't the only or even most important quality about them. it is what happens after they stop lasting that is worth looking at: are they recyclable? can the plastic actually be meaningfully renewed within our give recyclingsystems? is the material sustainably sourced, not just in an environmental sense but also a sociological sense. i'm happy you made so many good memories in those shoes, but as informed consumers there is better options than an all plastic shoe.

@@aesthetiquemoon Oh no, no, I was actually making fun of them, and how they just wouldn't die! I shudder to think of all the those Payless sneakers lasting forever in a dump somewhere. Because those shoes lasted so long it just goes to prove that we have to be aware of just what we're doing when we're buying this type of footwear. I live in Louisiana and we are really feeling the effects of climate change here and it's scary. So far our summer was 90 degree days in June! And now it's been 100 degree days in July and August. It's been unrelenting, and also we've experienced droughts for the first time in the last 5 years, which is unheard of this close to Lake Maurepas where we live. I miss the days when we had afternoon showers every day in summer to cool things down, and we never had such hot summers. We've sure made a mess of this and I hope it's not too late to try and change it. As usual, another great video! ❤

@@aesthetiquemoon you can donate running shoes of any brand to Nike and they will grind 'em up and make running tracks out of them. The "Grind Program." I don't know if they take "plastic" shoes. For $129, TerraCycle will send you a box measuring 11 x 11 x 20 inches (larger boxes are also available). You can fill the box with used shoes of any kind-running shoes included, of course-and then you use the prepaid label to send the box back. After they receive your box, they strip the shoes to separate the materials by type (rubber, foam, plastics, fabrics, etc.), and then repurpose them or recycle them accordingly.

@@janmarchand7294 I visited New Orleans in the mid-1970's and it rarely got below 100 degrees in July, its a muggy swampy type climate. Look at the cemeteries in New Orleans, they are built above ground, been this way for years.
I have heard of this brand through some minimalist/sustainable fashion KZreadrs. I bought a pair of Vejas but ended up returning them because they were really narrow and too stiff for my liking (and I have narrow feet). Interesting to discover they are not as sustainable as they appear to be!

Maybe you would like Mephisto.
Have you checked out the artsy patterned shoes called UIN shoes and Raad shop?
the Veja's look like the NB's 550 but a bit more clean
Funny enough [sarcasm alert] Here in Brazil they EVEN MORE expensive!!! One pair of those is around R$ 700,00 (if they claim that all that sh*t is produced here, wtf this price T.T)
I love mine, they are better quality than Adidas and Nike, are both stylish and minimal and unisex and they’re the only trainer I wear. I have wide feet and the campo are the only white plimsole type shoe that is both comfortable and that fit my feet, they run big actually I find so I size down and the Venturi are sporty but provide better support and absorption than the campo, simply I love them
