How Useful Is the System Usability Scale (SUS) in UX Projects?

Ғылым және технология

#SUS is a 35-years old (thus well-established) way to measure user #satisfaction, but it is not the most recommended way of doing so in user research.

This sounds reasonable, but I think it’s wrong. Both observation and opinion are equally important. To say that users are not experts and so their opinion doesn’t matter is misguided. Yes, the opinions of just one or a few users shouldn’t hold too much weight. But the opinions of a well sampled larger set of users is far more important that the opinion of the so called expert designer. The expert has a theory about what users should like and find easy, and why they should like it and find it easy. But the only way to know if the expert’s theory is correct is to ask users. Yes, it’s just their opinion. But they are the users; the customers; the ultimate decision makers about whether the product sells. The “expert” is secondary. It’s like a chef insisting that his customer’s opinions about his food don’t matter because they’re not experts.

Hey cjgoeson I largely agree with your statement "observation and opinion are equally important" - spot on here! A larger set of users over a smaller group pointing out a UX issue would defiantly be a red flag to a designer, as should be addressed - however, I'd say the "expert" is still primary. Often, users "want" something over "needing" something, it's the job of the designer to recognise (and analyse) the user issues and solve problem that creates those user issues, rather than the issues individually; thus preventing the user issues from occurring. Users tend not to realise the bigger problem (unless they're an expert), but focus on the issue they're having at that moment, and for good reason. I'd say it's more accurate to describe the UX designer as Psychologist, a patient thinks they know the problems (and how to solve them) but it takes an expert to reveal the truth.

@@willsoward thanks for your thoughtful reply. I maintain that the doctor might have the expertise in treatment, but, for matters of experience, we must still ask the patient whether the treatment has alleviated their symptoms. That’s the bottom line.

No one said the opinion of (a sampled set of) users is less important than an expert designer. What was said, is that those users' behaviour is more important than their opinions. And that is a totally correct point and in fact a core tenet in meaningful UX work. Having read your second comment, cj, I would again state that instead of asking the user their opinion, we should observe their behaviour to see if they can easily perform the task. This gives us all we need to know. It is a well known phenomenon that struggling test participants afterwards say they loved the design.

@@onpointux there are circumstances under participants are more or less likely to misreport their preferences and opinions. I think that’s a separate problem. But I concede there still remain instances where opinion and observed behavior don’t seem consistent. I fall back on my original claim which is that opinion and observation are equally important to a researcher. You don’t want a user going around telling everybody your product is terrible and/or choosing not to purchase even if they do appear to be reaching their goals efficiently 🤷‍♂️
