How Ukrainian refugees are handling cultural integration in ethnically diverse areas of the UK

Just over a hundred thousand Ukrainians have sought refuge in the UK - the vast majority of them women and children.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But not all of them have found it easy to settle into a country where the ethnic diversity and cultural values are very different from what they’ve been used to back home.

The “Diversity Trainer” is a bit farcical. The issue isn’t that Ukrainian refugees aren’t aware of blacks and other non-white ethnicities existing in the UK, the issue is that their prejudices against such groups means that they don’t want to live anywhere near them. If you come to Britain and you don’t like the way the society is structured, you’re always at liberty to leave and find somewhere else more to your liking. 👍

Even in Ukraine they have had access to Western media and know what at least our self-proclaimed ideals are, they know that being openly racist is frowned upon here, yet they came over and still held firm to those beliefs and actions. Not all of them are actual asylum seekers - quite a few have come from parts of Ukraine which have not been affected much by the war. They just see this as an opportunity to easily find a better life in a more developed country, and that’s what they are looking for. In Eastern Europe they often complain about the quality of accommodation, e.g. ‘why is this not a 5-star hotel’ or ‘why is there no swimming pool around’. However, I know quite a few Ukrainians who are genuine asylum seekers. They are fine with everything they’re being given and they also learn the language and find jobs.

Guys, I am working with the refugees for the last year and a half being a refugee myself and I believe that Ukrainians are mostly prejudiced and they will never integrate if they are so unwillingly accepting new cultures and surrounding changes. No matter how much money goes for integration and language learning courses/job seeking, adapting to the new cultures is very difficult if you don’t want to change and realize that you’re in another country from now, so it’s time to respect its customs. Correct me if I am wrong but weren’t these Ukrainians supposed to be living with all the do gooders that wanted to take them in, now they are fed up with them we are housing them and teaching them how to integrate all costing lots and lots of money. Are they not supposed to be going home at some time so why are we doing all this for them. South of Ukraine is a safe enough place for them. We are also continuing to fund them to fight in this charade of a war so prolonging their return home.

That black woman is not British nor can she ever be British. It’s an ethnicity, not a civic phenomenon like being American or Brazilian.

Is it an ethnicity? Wouldn’t it also be a civic phenomenon at this point? Personally I’d say she can be British. British already encompasses the English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish. Also the Manx and Cornish if you want to go deeper. Britain has unfortunately changed so much that the label of British has become watered down. Having a global empire which encompassed the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australasia also didn’t help. She says she is English. She never will be English though. English is an ethnicity, not a civic phenomenon. The English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish sadly don’t have any sense of ethnic identity anymore, while all immigrants do (especially the ones who aren’t white).

British Muslims helped raise funds/ supplies for Ukraine, it’s unfortunate they’re finding it difficult to live around people of different backgrounds. The communities they’re ‘scared’ off are the ones that showed support for their country and welcomed them into the UK. If they integrated with those communities they’d see how much support and community spirit they have.
