How Ukraine can use Challenger 2s to push ‘deep into Crimea’ | Frontline

The destruction of a Challenger 2 tank in Ukraine, and the survival of its servicemen sheds light on its ‘elite’ capabilities compared to the Russian T72 tank, says Hamish de Bretton Gordon, a former commander of the royal tank regiment.

Kate Gerbeau, you're really the best interviewer. You ask all the best questions, you listen carefully, you let your guests answer properly, and you follow up with questions that are completely relevant and on-point. I find other news interviewers annoying, such as the way they interrupt constantly or repeat irrelevant questions, but not you. Everything you do is slick and professional. You show genuine interest in what your guests have to say and you develop a good rapport with them, getting the very best out of your allotted time. I always watch your interviews from beginning to end because they are a pleasure and I gain from them. Thank you, and please don't ever stop your fantastic work!

ANY tank is just a metal tin, that you will find there is a very large chance of dying inside, though the dying part are different levels depending on the tank, but then lets just say at least a very big chance you will be walking on the battlefield soon. So you should use these right, which i think today, sans air cover, you do not want to get near action without artillery peppering positions in front of it. CUZ you do not want to be engaging fortified AT positions and artillery, so those guys have to be forced into their holes so its just tank on tank, where it should be no problem. There would have been enough force to displace the turret and would have caused considerable damage inside. Recovery and rebuild, if possible, would be a workshop job.

The right handgrip was the accelerator just like a motorcycle. There was one pedal on the floor - the brake. Your point is very valid about training Reservists and National Guard because almost any soldier who ever rode a motorcycle can drive an Abrams. The unusual thing is instead of hearing a "Vroom, vroom", you hear a jet engine gradually increasing its whine.

If you look at the photo of that tank the turret is not aligned with the hull, it's at a slant, which means the drone or 152mm laser targeted shell popped the challengers turret. Any tank is just a tank. We shouldn't overestimate what they can do, given the circumstances there, and not underestimate what the Russians have to fight them. For the crew, I rather would sit in a Challenger or Leopard when hitting a mine, or being shelled, than in a T-72. For sure! After all these analyses, how useful western tanks are, the main obstacle are the huge amount of mines. Mineclearing equipment is even more helpful than any tank or IFV's. Reconnaissance is the most important to detect and clear the frontline from mines (anti-tank mines). Ukraine needs drones with IR sensoric and, besides mine clearing vehicles, maybe cheap drones which are able to detonate those mines. Idk why such drones not already exist, 500g C4 should be enough for a mine. A 300-500$ suicide drone (inclusive cheap optics/IR head) would be very useful when we can save a tank and crew.

He equates Russian and Ukrainian tanks with early T-72 he foughts - when in Ukraine most vehiles involved were T-64/T-80 line (better half I'd say). He misrepresents facts drilled into every tanker in the bootcamp - but for that, you'd have to have comparision of both lines of tanks and how it influences usage (like Poland transitioning from T-72s to Leopard 2). The only real minor issue I have is that the Government upped the number of tanks to be delivered from 14 to 28 gun tanks (plus armoured recovery and other support vehicles) a couple of weeks after the first announcement. Is it just the case that the second half of those promised deliveries have not been made? I assume at least some of them would have required at least some level of refurbishment? Or was it an honest mistake? If it was a mistake I do not think it was anything other than an honest one, the rest of the interview Hamish was superb. People make mistakes sometimes, even in our expert fields. I once got the taxonomical name of a species I had worked with for over a decade wrong every time in an hour long lecture once. Fortunately I at least spelt the name correctly on the slides! So I am not going to crucify people for honest mistakes.

The average life expectancy for a European front tank crew, during the Cold War, was 2 hours, if Russia turned it into a hot war. Of course, in that time, it was figured that each tank would or should remove 10 Russian tanks. So, with Russia actually playing out that hot war in Ukraine, our Western equipment is lasting much longer than what was predicted against the Soviet Union. And, despite what the bots might try to say, Russia is all in on Ukraine.

Unfortunately the video evidence I have seen has shown MULTIPLE Challenger tanks destroyed along with quite a bit of Leopard tanks. A great deal of Russian armour has been destroyed as well. Mines, drones, & new anti-armour systems (not including modern artillery!) are turning out to be a serious bane to tanks. Also one must consider defensive terrain modifications like dragons teeth & trenches. The current conflict indicates that the role of the tank in modern warfare needs alot of rethinking. A drone costing less than $500 takes out a tank costing millions of dollars. One tends to forget the people who are winning the war are the arms manufacturers!

@@superplayer931 The jet turbine is quieter than ordinary tank engines, has less heat signature, can burn more types of fuel, has quicker acceleration, does not require a lengthy warm up like ordinary tanks and weighs less, so an Abrams with thicker armor has better ground pressure than most country’s tanks. The only draw backs to the Abrams and Challenger are whether the end users have the technology and equipment to maintain it. It’s designed to operate from the frozen tundra of Alaska to the swamps of Louisiana, from the desserts of Arizona to the mountain woodland of Tennessee. Americans know how to build tanks with power trains that don’t break down; we built some of the most reliable armored vehicles in history. The relatively small size and low weight of Soviet tanks was part of an overall strategy - all the road and bridge infrastructure throughout the Soviet Union was built with maximum weights in mind - this was to render western MBTs too big and heavy to operate effectively in Soviet territory - which Ukraine was of course.

The turbine engine is a different beast from the usual diesels that are used. The crews need training, however the real bottle neck is the mechanics that have to be specially trained to maintain them.

Its lighter and more powerful than the diesels but you have to supply jet fuel forward... not an easy or safe job.. with any fuel and logistics is always an issue in strike range. The other issue is heat the infra red signature builds up fast on a gas turbine.. 🤔 so harder to hide? So probably better deployed in a breakthrough charge. Rather than stop go movement sniping.

I second the other guy who commented, the issue with Abrams is not crew training, but maintenance personnel training. That turbine engine is unlike anything else anyone else uses, and its incredibly complex even compared to the full power pack of a Challenger II or Leopard II. Going to take time to train the mechanics to repair and properly maintain them.

Slight correction is that while the Challenger 2 uses a rifled barrel this does not necessarily make it more accurate since competing rounds use fin stabilization. The rifled gun however allows for a wider variety of shells particularly for infantry support while sacrificing a fair bit of velocity.

yes and no. the rifling is only neccesary for HESH. And there are more effective infantry support rounds availible than that. (DM12 HEAT-FS-Multipurpose, DM11-HE-Frag Airburst etc)

It's predominantly to inpart spin on HESH rounds so that the explosive spreads better upon impact. As you note, it isn't needed for accuracy on other modern rounds.

HESH was prior to composite armor proliferation widely used against armored targets including tanks, and Russians using plenty of armored transporters and older tanks that did not have composite armor (or even newer enemy tanks showing at angles where exposing parts do not have composite armor) in which case they could be hit by Challenger spin-stabilized HESH rounds from ranges Russian armored vehicles have no hope of hitting back with smoothbore guns even if using guided ammunition currently available for Russian crews. Israelis were known to shoot at enemies with their localized 105mm rifled guns equipped Centurions from ranges in excess of 10km at which point most of the ATGMs Russia has will be a long time out of rocket propellant.

Tank turrets are designed to be removed you know. The important damage with a popped turret will be damage to the gearing of the turret, and damage to the turret ring itself. If those are badly damaged then you are absolutely right. If they are essentially still intact then the tank is repairable.
