How to Write Stream of Consciousness

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Stream of Consciousness captures thoughts as they occur in the mind. This type of writing opens the flow of thoughts from the brain, spilling them upon the page. It is like a word-for-word transcription of a person's thought process. In this video, Tom shares literary examples, benefits, and some exercises to get started with stream of consciousness writing.

Excellent video! I journal using stream of consciousness frequently, especially when I do not have to think about a previous day's events. Anything is fair game. Paragraphs, sentences can be written together that make no sense to anyone, even to yourself, at times. It is a wonderful feeling. Dreams are an excellent source. Many make no sense when thought about but it is literally what flowed from the recesses if your brain to your conscience.

Thank you for the valuable insights on writing. I found myself as a truly "messy" writer when I started this relatively-new hobby of writing my feelings and thoughts in journals and diaries. When I re-read my entries, I was quite surprised at how random and all-over-the-place my thoughts had been. At first, I couldn't believe what I wrote myself, and I got scared. But after hearing this, perhaps I can slowly understand my own thought process and can find the courage to find out more about myself. Thank you!

Loved this! Great job, Tom! I journal every day, but have been yearning to write more in a less structured way. I think, this may be the ticket. Cheers!

Just have to comment on the genius of choosing this as a topic of a fountain pen vid and following up with excellent execution. 10/10

This is very interesting. I didn’t know anything about this but it is exactly how I journal. I always have inspiration. My mind plays tricks on me as I’m writing slower than I can think the stories that flow from my head to my hand. I have to learn to write faster (and still readable) to keep up. Another tip for people who want to write like this is reading passages or imagining situations that influenced your emotions. Things or situations that made your senses work and remember that situation. The souvenirs of your life.

I really enjoy these types of videos, Tom. They provide us with so much inspiration to just write! How many us have so many unused pens and notebooks just laying around? Let's just get writing!

It would really be great if you put together some videos with ideas and techniques on how to put things on paper, like how to create topics and how to develop them, etc. Well, it seems you have a handle on literary techniques. Great video, thanks for sharing.

I’ve never had to “try” at this technique. It was always something that just happened when journaling. I always thought this was how you were supposed to journal. For me it does clear my mind and bring out ideas to expand on later in a more structured way. But I will start journaling literally anywhere I can just to clear the clutter in my head if I have a moment to do so.

Writing really does help you mentally. As much as doctors and therapists like to not take it seriously or laugh at it. They rather take your money than encourage you to take steps towards self help

For those whose stream works better on a keyboard than with a pen, all Windows OS computers come with Notepad. It is super simple, allows a change of font, but only at a time. It has no spell check. You can turn word wrap on or off. It stores docs as .txt format, so font choice is not saved. My handwriting is terrible, always has been. So, I would seriously doubt that Mac or Apple computers lack such a program (App). It has no spell check, even manual.

I often free write with pencils and ballpoints in a messy style of print script. Love fountain pens as I do, I never use them for this purpose as I only write in cursive with them and so I write slowly and carefully. I notice that you seem to use both cursive and print with fountain pens. Do you think combing both styles would damage a fountain pen nib?

I start off with the date , pen, ink, sunrise/sunset, temperature low high if its sunny rainy or cloudy, then I start with a 365 question of the day, daily quote, and then the inkyprompt from inkjournal. birthdays and then I start my day ... and I usually write in string of conciousness as things happen throughout my day so that way I can look back and say oh boy this happened and this was the way I was feeling ... it really helps when people ask what did you do that day
