Fun fact Ruby: if you want a toggle on notion, you can enter the greater than sign (>) then a space, and it automatically turns into a toggle!

Regarding searching on google scholar: Instead of just typing in the relevant words, use smart searches and Boolean methods. If you use quotation markers it will search exactly for that phrase. For example, if you type: 19th century American literature, without quotation marks, it can pull up results for “American” and “literature” but if you use “19th century American literature” it will ONLY show up results with that entire phrase. Equally use AND and OR. For example, I do medieval PhD so if I wanted to look for sources on late medieval art and Eucharistic theology, I could write in google scholar: “Late medieval” OR Renaissance OR “fifteenth century”AND “Eucharistic theology” All in one search, and relevant searches would then appear exactly to match my topic.

So fun to see how someone in a different field approaches their work. I am a botany student, currently competing a masters in research. I got a 1.1 in my degree and actually graduated top of my class but my lifestyle definitely differed from yours. I worked as a bartender in my final year (around 20 hours a week, I know, probably too much). The whole late night lifestyle turned me fairly nocturnal and I studied from 6pm until 6am towards my final exams. It was so hectic but all the hard work paid off. I just want people to know you can achieve good grades in all sorts of lifestyles. Find what works for you. You can achieve great things once you're willing to put the time in.

I am currently cramming an essay for an English class tomorrow, HOW did you know?!

I have never been able to study like this, I tend to mull it over in my head, get the out line in the head and then just write the essay, leave it a few days re read it and see what needs altering, but I have autistic spectrum disorder so may be it's a quirk of that.

Funnily enough, I've been encouraged by a lot of my tutors to use "I" in an essay and not to shy away from it. For example saying "I argue that" rather than something like "It can be argued that" clearly demonstrates that you're discussing your viewpoint rather than the viewpoint of other critics and literature, which can make the structure clearer and the argument more compelling. It might be different for other courses though; I study Sociology at Bristol. Also, I relate so much to the document alignment thing and am very glad I'm not the only one 😂

Yes! I’m a tutor at oxford and would agree with this! Also instead of “I” you could say something like “this essay will argue that..”. Similar subject here- I am mainly in human sciences/ anthropology/ human evolution

So ok, before making the video public you can make it private so that only people with link can see it. That's what youtubers usually do. Make a video private, watch it to make sure everything is ok (or maybe send to someone) and then make it public for audience to see. The views stay documented though.

I totally relate to the proof reading! What we typically do in our friend group is exchange papers and provide each other with feedback. Also super useful! Especially because other people will have a different view/knowledge and this always helps to improve it. Would definitely recommend! Plus it gives you ideas and inspiration for your own paper, even though we typically have different subjects.

I just had to write my first essay in years, for the first exam of my college degree that I started on this fall. And I just gotta say, your method here of creating an outline with toggles and bullet points in notion, completely saved my ass. I was really stressed because I wasn't able to start writing when I was supposed to, but with this method I knew I wouldn't get stuck and everything would be fine, so I was able to just focus well and write the whole thing in just a day. And in addition I'm actually super happy with how it turned out! So thank you!!!

I enjoy when you make videos more in depth videos about your work fo university. Literature was one of my options, but I opted for another major, so I like living vicariously through you

I wish I had time to write essays for my own pleasure. Throughout my years at uni I have encountered so many interesting topics and had so many ideas. What is also blocking me from writing essays for fun is the idea of ‘but will it be good enough’ 😕. Also, I haven’t had the chance to use Notion for writing an essay. Using bullet point might actually help me to get over my perfectionism. Sometimes I can’t even hit 500 words a day. Do you happen to have any more tips on getting into that essay writing flow? 😅

I think that it's meant to be PractiCe Essay, not PractiSe Essay, as in this context 'practice' is a noun. I know that spelling and grammar aren't everything, especially when your writing isn't being reviewed or counted towards anything, so please disregard my arm-chair-editing if this isn't something you want to think about. Here's a concise summary 😬: . Brief essay plan / mind map . Research critical essays to support . Add details of research information in each paragraph. . Write introduction and conclusion. . Extra research to see what you can add or have missed. . Have an idea on what you're arguing about and link it to your paragraphs. .writing essay in bullet points first as to ease yourself of the fear of being informal or having less information, so that you can easily come back and change it. . Make sure all your paragraphs have similar levels of evidence ,be continuous in a formal essay. . Proof read (preferably aloud) . Send essay to studiosity for feedback on what you want to improve. . Submit 🙃

That would be very useful 3 years a go, when I wrote my 400 pages Architectural Acoustics Research Report for my Architecture degree. I passed several months writhing over 14 hours a day, and couple more doing all the digital illustrations and coding acoustical simulations. If some day I need to do it again I’ll gonna follow all your tips from this video, and your planning methodology to be more organized and productive

I just did my first uni mock exams after 5 weeks of teaching and got two 2.1’s and a 2.2 I’m really happy with it!

Oh yes, another big tip is to dictate the finished essay in to a Dictaphone or your smart phone, leave a couple of days then listen back, that's the best way to reveal final mistakes.
