How to Write a Cover Letter or Personal Statement | Rhetoric & Composition | Study Hall

Writing cover letters can at times feel like a necessary evil. It can be hard to write about ourselves and pack in as much information as we can into a small space. However, a good cover letter or personal statement can bring you one step closer to an academic or professional goal. In this episode, Dr. Emily Zarka, discusses how to write effective cover letters and personal statements that persuasively represent your best self.

Framing it as a genre was a relief, thank you.

Thank you so much for making this type of writing seem so manageable! It was very helpful. One thing I want to mention is that using working late as an example of a good skill for a cover letter seems doesn't seem like a healthy thing to do, it kind of has a toxic work environment feel to it. I think mentioning things like this (working late hours, not taking days off, not planing to go on a maternity leave) is not the best choice to present yourself as it might give you an unfair advantage and attract the wrong type of leadership.
