HOW TO WRITE A B THEME Melody writing method to compose a middle section and write longer pieces

In this video we use the Main Theme from the Final Fantasy video game score to learn about writing an effective B theme.
📚 Many of the ideas in this video come from my favorite music book of all time: Analyzing Classical Form by William Caplin geni.us/lxrqx
Students tell me all the time "I have no problem coming up with ideas" or "I can compose a main theme just fine," but then they reach a point where they get stuck. With Final Fantasy as our guide, let's figure out how to get unstuck!

Nice thanks ! Would be great to see a video on larger forms (binary, ternary..). I very often struggle to do a 3min piece and find a good balance between reusing ideas (too repetitive) or developing them (lack of consistency).

Yes I definitely will get to some larger forms at some point. My general advice is that people can (and should) reuse and repeat way more than they usually think they can!

Great video, as usual! The idea of using material from the A section in the B section got me thinking of some Williams' themes. The Raiders March is a good example - the B section uses the same rhythms, and moves into the relative minor of the A. The B section of Hedwig''s Theme uses similar harmony as the A but with different rhythmic character in the melody. To take 2 random themes of his...

How would you structure a C section for a Rondo form:ABACABA? The same principle as the B, only different, or something else? Possibly starting on the V chord, or even modulating to the key of V?

Sure, to create an ABA form is one reason. You can only repeat your main theme so many times before it becomes redundant and people feel a need for change.
