HOW TO WRITE A B THEME Melody writing method to compose a middle section and write longer pieces
In this video we use the Main Theme from the Final Fantasy video game score to learn about writing an effective B theme.
📚 Many of the ideas in this video come from my favorite music book of all time: Analyzing Classical Form by William Caplin geni.us/lxrqx
Students tell me all the time "I have no problem coming up with ideas" or "I can compose a main theme just fine," but then they reach a point where they get stuck. With Final Fantasy as our guide, let's figure out how to get unstuck!

Nice thanks ! Would be great to see a video on larger forms (binary, ternary..). I very often struggle to do a 3min piece and find a good balance between reusing ideas (too repetitive) or developing them (lack of consistency).

Yes I definitely will get to some larger forms at some point. My general advice is that people can (and should) reuse and repeat way more than they usually think they can!

Ryan looking at your music while you're talking is great. You let us see and hear the music while you talk I think we really learn a lot. Thank you. Great.
That "Major chords from other keys feel more major" explains a lot =)))

So good and helpful! (Great choice for example too!) I am tearing into your vids and have an extensive google doc going with all these amazing tips. I also see your sub count growing daily, so I'm gonna keep liking and commenting to help you get the numbers quality material like this deserves. Thanks for all you do!

Great video, as usual! The idea of using material from the A section in the B section got me thinking of some Williams' themes. The Raiders March is a good example - the B section uses the same rhythms, and moves into the relative minor of the A. The B section of Hedwig''s Theme uses similar harmony as the A but with different rhythmic character in the melody. To take 2 random themes of his...
Hi Ryan! Thanks for all the Content. I started learning your lessons about 9 years ago at Envato. Meanwhile i finished university and started working as a media composer as well. i really enjoy you videos. they are perfectly structured and not too long or too short. Thanks for everything i learned so far. Keep up the great work. Happy to see that you have a KZread Channel! greetings from Austria Timo Jagersberger
This has been more than useful! Thank you!
Very helpful! Not a moment wasted.
How would you structure a C section for a Rondo form:ABACABA? The same principle as the B, only different, or something else? Possibly starting on the V chord, or even modulating to the key of V?
Thanks for that👍
Can you please please create a video really explaining harmony and all the music theory terms. I didn't really understand when you alked about them in this vid
Sir yor videos r so informative but please kindly use some DAW for demonstration Not everyone understand those scores n staffs please 🙏

The score is basically already a DAW, it's just that different voices lie on different pentagrams.
One easy thing that works for me sometimes is taking the A theme and doing all backwards with some minor tweaks.
What's the difference in the feeling between ABA and BAB?
@Arhidilius
Жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but, imho, difference is emphasis, A is more important than B
why would one use a B theme??? is this due to the binary/ternary nature of the piece?
@RyanLeach
2 жыл бұрын
Sure, to create an ABA form is one reason. You can only repeat your main theme so many times before it becomes redundant and people feel a need for change.
@vascosanchez

Because it would feel boring after a while if we don't add anything
In the B Section, the music goes to the Subdominant, yes, but then each succeeding phrase starts another fourth up (or circle of fifths down) in the bass.
can somebody comment the whole chord progression here; would really appreciate it
@RyanLeach
Жыл бұрын
A bit simplified because it doesn’t account for every non chord tone and passing tone, etc. but I think it's this F C/E Bb/D C Bb G/B F/C C Gm/Bb D/A Gm11 D/F# Gm G7/F C/E C7 Bb - F - Eb D7 Gm F Ab - Gm/D - Fm/Ab Dbmaj7 C7 /Bb

@@RyanLeach one more question; a chord like C/E is not an inversion right? its still played CEG without rearranging it? i just have to play an E instead of the root C in the lower octave right? please help
@RyanLeach
Жыл бұрын
@@melorams22 Yes it is an inversion. C/E means C major triad with E in the bass (the lowest note of the chord)

@@RyanLeach if im accompanying with another bass instrument; should i play C or E for the bass?
@ryanhulme
Жыл бұрын
@@melorams22 C/E means a C chord with E in the bass, so the other bass instrument would definitely play an E.
