How To Wire Dual ESC's

Ойын-сауық

www.rc-help.com
I had a request to do a video about how to wire dual motor/esc's on an airplane. This will work with EDF's, props, or anything inbetween. If you guys would like to see a video on a question that you have, just let me know and I will see about making it.

Wow this was soooo helpful. I have an old redcat wendigo RC car laying around. The car its self is built poorly and parts on the drivetrain keep breaking. However, the electronics are still good, so I was thinking of buying another motor and esc and converting my longboard to an eskate since I also have some spare eskate stuff. I wasn’t sure it was possible but now it seems like it may work

I am planning on building an electric skateboard. It will need two of these "vesc" esc controllers one for each rear wheel. Now the vesc controllers are software configurable so not exactly sure how this is going to work. You do get dual vesc units but they are way more expensive.

It is possible. In that case, you would remove the red wire from BOTH ESC's and you would run a separate BEC to power the receiver and servos. This way, if you have a motor or ESC failure, something burns up or whatever, you still have a secondary power source (actually I guess in this case it would be primary lol) that keeps your servos and receiver working so you can dead sick the plane back to the ground. Just be sure to remove both red wires from the ESC's so that you are not feeding voltage in from them AND the BEC. Castle makes a really good 10a BEC. www.Rc-Help.com

Why do you need to remove the one positive wire from the one esc? In my mind i thought just plug the wye harness into both esc leads to the receiver and away you go. Clearly this is not the case. If your ESC(s) have switching BEC's, you want to remove one wire (red) since they can backfeed voltage into the other ESC. It will also cause the voltage going into the Rx to be inconsistent which in most cases is not an issue but with some it makes them mad lol. I just find it safer to take out one red wire. www.Rc-Help.com

  • @davidcsokasy5451

    @davidcsokasy5451

The reason one of the red wires is disconnected is to prevent backfeeding BEC power to one of the ESCs. The ESCs will say 5V-ish for BEC power. Even if the ESCs are the same make and model, the BEC power supplies will not be exactly the same voltage. Since the power is directly tied together from both ESCs via the Y-Splitter the BEC with the higher output voltage will be backfeeding power into the ESCs BEC power supply. This can cause various problems depending on the design of the ESC electronics. You could also wire diodes into the circuit. There are benefits to using diodes, it is more complicated and not technically necessary.

    1. using brakes on an EDF has no real affects to how it works. On a glider, you would want brakes on so the prop would stop and fold. With an EDF, I always just left the ESC stock. 2. I set mine at 3.2. If you are seeing it hit the LVC too soon though from too much amp draw (voltage sag), first I would look at getting better batteries, but you could also try lowering it to 3.0 or 3.1. But you are risking damaging the cells going that low. 3. Startup for an EDF or prop plane should always be normal (linear to stick movement). Soft start settings are for helicopters so the tail doesn't whip around, and also looks pretty cool lol. 4. Timing is going to depend on what the motor manufacturer suggests. Some motors like a lot of timing advance and some don't like much at all. I would look up the spec sheet for your motor and see what it says. Hope this helps. www.Rc-Help.com

I can't find any specs on that motor of where to start, so I would start with a lower timing number, fly it, and see what the temp of the motor is. Keep doing this until you start to get a hot motor after flying, then back it down one notch. Don't jump way ahead, it can severely over heat the motor. Of course you do this at your own risk since there is a chance you can burn up the motor. But start low and work your way up. Flying time should be about two minutes of normal flying. That should be more than enough to get some heat in the motor. www.Rc-Help.com

RcHelpDotCom thanks for taking the time to respond. When I match up the ESC colors with the motor, they both spin CW, but when I swap two of the three wires on one side, It pushes that motor backwards (reverse) and CCW. So now I have CCW with one motor going forward when the other going reverse.

  • @RcHelpDotCom

@@anthonyfakhoury7427 Cold solder joints are joints that were not properly heated and tinned. If you drop a piece of molten solder onto a table, you can just pick it up (after it cools off). This is a cold joint because the metal table was not properly heated. The same can go for terminal ends where you can solder wires onto. If it's not properly heated and tinned, the solder will not stick. Usually a simple tug on the wires is all that is needed to test the joint (there are definitely exceptions).

You will need to calibrate your ESC's to the Tx. Just raise the throttle on the TX (with it on of course), plug in the ESC's (without props or blades on) and wait for the two or so beeps, then lower the throttle all the way down. Once you do that, both motors should start at the same time. www.Rc-Help.com

I think for this particular setup I was using this on a duel EDF setup. The battery would have been a 2200mah 3s 45c pack. It came down warm and needed to be a higher C rating, but did not puff the pack. Just make sure your battery can handle BOTH motors. www.Rc-Help.com

    6 жыл бұрын

A 30 amp ESC can handle 30 amps as stated. The C rating is for the battery and it the discharge rating. Sometimes it is also the charge rating, but charging should always be done at a 1c or 2c for max pack life. Got a puzzle / problem I need some help with: I have an RC car with two different ESC's, one for the main motor and one that I'm planning to use to power lights. However, the built-in BEC's output different voltages (the one for the motor 6V, the small one for the lights 5V). To connect both ESC's to the receiver, I'm removing the positive lead from the small 5V BEC ESC. The problem is now that when I connect both ESC's to the same battery for power, there's lots of current flowing through the ground wires as if it's a short for some reason. This does not happen if I either use two different batteries for the two ESC's, or if I don't connect the ground wire from the small ESC to the receiver. The trick is, I don't have any more room for more batteries and I must connect the ground wire to the receiver in order for the small ESC to properly take the signal. What the hell do I do??

  • @RcHelpDotCom

The ground wire that connects to the battery and the ground wire that connects to the receiver should be connected. A common ground is what I always try to shoot for so I know everything is talking on the same field. If you are getting a large drain with both ESC's connected to the same battery, or both ESC's connected to the Rx, then something (in my opinion) is wrong. If you have the red wire pulled from the smaller ESC, it should have no way of passing current unless it is not seeing a low throttle signal and is trying to drive something out of the main leads. This one is a head scratcher. Come over to the forum and post up some detailed pictures of what you are working on. www.Rc-Help.com

@@RcHelpDotCom I did some digging and I found out that my main ESC is a bit weird. It's a Traxxas EVX-2, it has two connectors for batteries but it seems to run them in series and not in parallel. The BEC of that ESC is only powered by one of the two batteries however. That means the common ground is either connected to the ground of one of the batteries if I connect the small ESC to the battery that powers the BEC in the big ESC, but it is connected to the positive of the second battery if I let the small ESC draw power from the second battery. It seems I have connected it to the battery that doesn't power the BEC in the main ESC. I'll replace the burned wires today and see if it works...

@@RcHelpDotCom No problem! I love the learning process, too. However, I bought the truck used, it's a Traxxas Summit. The previous owner told me that it's an after market ESC because the original one didn't have a LiPo cut-off built in, this one does. I only know it's a waterproof Traxxas EVX-2 for brushed motors. If you search the name you'll find some wiring schematics and the manual. BTW I replaced the wires and it's exactly as I expected: It works fine as long as I power the smaller ESC from the battery that already powers the BEC inside of the main ESC. Kinda inefficient setup but it gets the job done until my brushless ESC arrives in the mail :)

I definitely do not know your setup, however on a quad the motors are wired individually and have their own ESC. The power wires can be soldered together as can the small servo wires, but the signal wire will need it's own signal so that motor knows what to do in the air. Again, I don't know your setup, just pointing some things out for those that may read the comment. www.Rc-Help.com

@Dustin p Lee On a quad, the motors will have their own ESC per motor. In most cases these days, all 4 (or however many motors you have) will be on a single board under your stack. Unless you are talking about a plane with dual motors, in which case, I do apologize. I was referring to a quadcopter. Apologies for the double ping by replying with my other account previously if you received an email on that one as well.
