How to Wire a 5 Pin Automotive Relay. Pins 87/30/85/86/87a . Bosch Style. Fans / Fuel Pump / Lights
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is a how-to video for wiring a 5 pin Bosch-style Automotive relay. I’ve created an actual circuit for you to follow along with, and I explain how they work. Relays are important to have for Fuel Pumps, Electric Fans, Horns, Aftermarket Lights, etc. They protect the switch from damage by passing the higher amperage through the relay instead of the switch. In this specific diagram, it is wired as a "positive trigger" relay. That means that you are controlling the positive side of the circuit with a switch, rather than the negative side.
0:00 How to Wire a Relay
0:52 Pin 30 - Power goes into this from the battery.
1:05 Pin 87 - Power comes out of this and goes to your accessory with the switch ON.
1:23 Pin 86 - Power goes into this from the switch.
2:01 Pin 85 - Goes to ground.
2:15 Pin 87A - Power comes out of this with the switch OFF. It doesn't need to be used.
2:36 Relay Diagram Recap
How to Wire a Relay:
Pin 30 - Power goes INTO this pin from a 12v power source (This could be a battery or fuse box). You should always run a fuse in between the power source and the relay. The fuse size depends on what you are powering. See this video to learn about proper fuse sizing. • What Size Fuse and Wir...
Pin 87 - Power will come OUT of this pin. This pin needs to be connected to the power side of your accessory (LED light, fuel pump, radio, etc.)
Pin 86 - Power goes INTO this pin FROM the toggle switch. The other side of the switch should be connected to a power source (A battery or fuse box.) Theres should always be a fuse in between the power source and switch. See this video to learn about proper fuse sizing. • What Size Fuse and Wir...
Pin 85 - This connects to ground. The chassis, body, negative terminal on battery should all work if they are already grounded properly.
Pin 87a - Power will come OUT of this pin when the toggle switch is turned OFF. This pin is not always needed and can be ignored if so.

Nice and simple. Thanks for posting. Great description and I love the example board - exactly what a DIYer needs. Cheers from down under mate.
I love it. I wire relays in as kill switches. Looking at the wiring diagrams for that car. Cutting into the power to the fuel pump from the fuel pump relay to pins 30 and 86. Pin 87 continues the circuit to the pump. Pin 85 goes to the hidden switch , the other side of the switch is hooked to ground. On some I use 87A to power a horn under the drivers seat so if the ignition is turned on with the kill switch off the horn under the drivers seat goes off. I normally try to get the 130db horns from the cheap tool store.

The best explanation I have come across. Jawdroppingly simple yet informative. A 4 minute video on something that would be extended to 1,5 hours in school (if even taught)
All I have is a relay in hand with no packaging. It was given to me by a mechanic because I was burning up switches to the electric fan in my Jeep. Laid out like a elementary school project makes all the difference in understanding. Labeling the colors functions and placements is a blessing. Thank you so much for your video.👍
@WiringRescue

That’s fantastic! You may like a few of my other videos too about choosing the right wire sizes and fuse sizes. It’s all really important if you want to prevent wires from burning! Good luck with the Jeep! They rule!
I really appreciate you creating this video. It helped me understand the typical relay circuit I needed for my project. An improvement to this demonstration could be showing the switch receiving power from a lower amp 12v source, say your fuse box, instead of (1:31) showing it coming out of the same fuse powering the light. You could use an 18ga wire to power the second fused line all the way to the switch and thru to the relay (coming from the same battery but routed outside of the video frame). The power feeding the light could be a 14ga wire from the battery clamp all the way to the light. This way, you could visually demonstrate how a low amp switch could power a higher amp device. Also, you could make the wire from the switch to the relay be really long and coiled up to demonstrate how you can use a single cheap long thin wire to control a device that requires a more expensive thicker shorter wire. I bought a 5-pin relay because that was all they had at the auto parts store. Thanks for explaining 87A. I won't need it for my project, but its good to know what it's for. This would have been a good time to introduce to your audience the terms "normally open" and "normally closed." Thanks for sharing your knowledge. -Jimmy
Great explanation! I have a question, I want to wire my fans to continue to run as needed on a temp sensor after I turn my engine off. so when I shut off my engine the power to my fan relay is off, I want the secondary power to come on to continue to cool off my engine. Any suggestions/tips on how to wire that up?
@WiringRescue
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! I think you should consider one of these adjustable fan switches instead: shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/imperial-adjustable-thermostatic-fan-control-226204/3670006-p You can adjust them to turn on at any temp, and you can wire it to be on all the time (read below). One word of warning though. The reason that almost no cars come with this feature is because it’s dangerous when you are working on the car. If the fan decides to turn on when you are wrenching under the hood, it could really injure somebody. So - I would always recommend wiring it to the ignition power instead. That way it will never turn on when your car is off.
By far this is the best explanation i have seen👍👍👍

This is awesome. Thank you 🙏 I am putting late model headlights in my Lexus ISF. They are LED daylight runners. There are two wires to power. One is for 100% brightness, the other is for 50%. So, when I turn the ignition on, one wire gets the 100% led lights on. As soon as I turn the park lights in, it will switch to 50%. This helped me visually understand what I need to do 😀😀
