    Reverse your polarity and try again, use a smaller rod too. I've seen guys use a coat hanger and three batteries in a pinch, but you have to use the positive terminal on the ground side.

    You need to reverse polarity, the electrode on he negative. I checked out several other utube videos and they had the ectrode on the negative and made some really clean welds.

    Tips here: HEAVY Guage cables ( "0") connected using crimped eyelets. Rod size 1/16 or 3/32 only here. 24 volt will tack. 36 will do short beads. 48v and above does longer beads. Welding using lead acid batteries carries the risk of a hydrogen explosion, so batteries should be COVERED to block sparks, and only in a WELL VENTILATED area.

    @matthewjenkins11615 жыл бұрын

    You'll maintain the arc better with thinner rods or bigger batteries. I think one limiting factor is the very thin guage wire you used between the batteries which I'm sure must've got very hot. They are just as much part of the circuit as the welding leads themselves. Thicker cable = less voltage drop.

    I'm convinced! You *can* weld with some good, charged up batteries. Although, with the price of batteries nowadays, you may as well pick up a small portable welder. Good video gentlemen.

    An arc was maintained just fine! Good job! I didn't expect the results you managed to achieve. In a pinch , it will work. Going to throw some 7018's in the glove box. Thanks!

    Dr is right... You can weld with car batteries but you CONNECT OPPOSITE then what you are thinking. Positive becomes the GROUND connected to what you are welding and NEG side is the ROD HOLDER SIDE.. You can use one battery in a pinch you just have to use a rod or wire that is smaller with a little lower melting point.

    @@daniellarkey6573 it should work flawlessly with some sorta current regulator. There's a li-ion battery powered welder on the market so it's absolutely possible. And shorter and thicker cables. Thin jump cables dont start the engine

    subbed... thanks for the effort, R&D. My van has been retrofitted with a massive 115AH deep cycle battery. My OEM alternator is 160amps. With the engine running I can power up 12 amps of 110v (about 1500 watts) through a 2000 watt inverter with no issue. I am wondering if I had a step up buck converter rated at 24v out 40amp (480w or maybe even 960w) would I be able to weld 1/4 rebar like this with my engine running? If so any way to isolate to protect my battery and van? What kind of rod you recommend? FYI: I've never welded before.
