The most logical solution is to get a second giant sword and then use them as stilts when you're not in combat.

So far this whole Titan Sword series feels like a D&D one shot with the Artificer and Paladin while the rest of the party is busy irl

Another method could be stretching what it means to wear the sword. You could build a small frame with wheels to hold the tip of the sword and position the other point of contact either on your shoulder or on your hip. There is also always the "make a couple peasants carry it for you and hand it to you when needed" method.

Just saw the video (10 days late) and had a similar idea. What about wearing on a hip hook with a caster wheel clipped on to the tip of the sword? It could be flung at the opponent to possibly end them rightly. It would certainly be flung somewhere, likely distant, but recovery would be a post-combat operation.

A character called Raelza, in the anime "Handyman Saitō in Another World" has a giant sword with an interesting means of wearing it. She has a keyhole opening on her sword and a corresponding hanger on her back. So she lines up the round hole with the round hanger, brings it in and then it drops into the slot to secure it. To remove it, she just pulls it up slightly and then it unhooks. Its simple, but it works.

yah i was hoping theyd go to lowe's and get a couple U-brackets and either make a simple harness or attach them to his armor somehow. That first rung on the titan sword is at the perfect length of the blade for hanging it off of some u-brackets.

Idk I'm inclined to agree with Elijah-- I could never take that risk with a seriously expensive sword, when I could rather strengthen up my arms to throw the sword up to the ledge, and practice up on Parkour to find ways up to high ledges WITHOUT any sort of ladder

@Elijah Sounds like a weaponized ladder would be preferable to a dual use sword. Would be pretty boss if pulled off well though. Imagine throwing a ladder onto a castle wall, climbing over, and then pulling the ladder back into your hand as a weapon (though admittedly leverage would probably make it cumbersome)

Ideally this "ladder sword" should just be two very long spears fused together with ladder steps Maybe the ladder steps could be spears themselves too poking out from the sides The bottom of the ladder should have crowbar-like ends so you can hang the ladder onto ledges

I know nothing about this subject, but, in a common perspective, I agree that the 2nd option seemed the quickest, most fluid method of both carrying & easily removing the ginormous Titan Sword for readiness of use. By the way, I recently binged a channel called Tasting History with Max Miller (ancient recipes made today) & he mentioned once loving watching your channel. It was nice hearing that crossover of my interests.

Guts Devil Tail scabbard from Berserk is a pretty cool, simple and seemingly effective design. The tip of sword is sheathed by a pocket that has a strip that connects to his armor somewhere on his back (creating a devil tail look when the sword is in use) and then he as a chain and hook on the back of his armor that holds the sword up against his back, as well as a hook on his armor and the chain loop on the dragon slayer as a sort of redundancy.

That's pretty much how I thought to do it just off the top of my head, completely forgot Berserk did that, but you could just have a hook for the center shaft of the titan sword somewhere around the shoulder. The chain and everything used in Berserk would work for a giant sword, a titan sword would be easier to hang though. Pocket tip scabbard/sheath off a belt, like an actual tail. And then a hook on the shoulder, you lift it out of the pocket lift it off the hook and "LEEVERAGE" it over the shoulder.

In Monster Hunter, while greatswords don't have -scabbards- sheathes, longswords (comparable length but much thinner) do, and I noticed a clever bit of design they occasionally use. The sheathe looks like an entire sheathe, but there's actually a slit on the top running almost the full length, so that you only have to lift the sword a little ways to clear the bit of sheathe at the end, and then you can just pull it free through the slit. I always liked that detail. Of course in the actual animation you just phase your sword, which expands in size when you take it out anyway, straight through any sheathe which may or may not be there

Actually, that may not be bad! Having a harness/sheath with a slit that runs all the way along the top (with a small closed-over section at the last few inches) that runs the length of the blade and largely stays in via gravity with a small quick-release latch or strap at the top to hold it in... To draw you release the catch/strap, lift it up and out. The sheath would be less tight, allowing for the weapon to be drawn out the side without dragging the sheath with it. That would provide further protection for the blade (against getting dulled on accidental bumping against tables, doors, dungeon walls, etc.) and protection for passerby (in cities, castles). So, the Titan Shabbard.

By Greatswords are you referring to the giant longsword (katana), or the Greatsword/Axe weapon?

@@YiotisTheGnome By greatswords I'm referring to the biggest giant swords, which are called greatswords. Longswords refers to the long, relatively skinny, often katana-styled swords. Greatswords are sometimes axe-like, but they are distinct from switch axes, large axes that transform into giant swords. There's lots of room for confusion with Monster Hunter weapons

What I'm thinking is a single-edged titan sword with the central pole extending further along the length. This would allow the wielder to simply hold it pommel-down as a walking staff. Single-edged means you can keep the cutty bits pointed out away from you for safety.

The quick release of number 2 is definitely the best, but I think the storage method of number 3 (held forwards) is the most practical. A combination of those aspects would lead to the best carrying method I think.

I think it also depends on how you expect to be using it - number 1 with the right type of hook shape would be a secure enough, fast and easy to draw AND stow method. With the hooks well positioned, maybe even made part of the armour itself there is no strap to pose a problem or get harmed/lost in combat. Making it perhaps the best method for a more rapid high mobility user - the town guard that needs to quell the unrest here, perhaps draw for intimidation and then run off over there without looking the fool as they put the weapon away. Or adventurer that expects to get into troubles they may have to run/climb to escape from and still need their weapon later. Where number 2 as its a touch slower to put away but very simple, cheap and should be easy to adjust to fit anybody is good for outfitting an army of nutter with giant swords. And 3 is pretty swift to draw and stow but perhaps gets in the way a bit much in use. Seems to me all of them are likely to be the best choice for some folks from what we have seen so far, but not everyone.

The Giant sword table was an idea that was funny in concept but surprisingly practical in execution.

I agree that the second method seems the most viable. If you put the quick release on the sling belt you could even carry it like you did using the third method, underarm and pointed forward. It is also easilly applicable to the original prototype via, as you said, drilling a hole. I suggest paired crescents on either side of the spine at your desired length: this way the blade profile isn't compromised, and it should still be useable as a table, shield, or even griddle.

Own a sword for manor defence, since that's what the Magna Carta intended. Four heathens break into my cottage. "What in the Lord's name?" As I grab my aventail bascinet and windlass arbalest. Punch a bolt through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Throw a pot of naft at the second man and miss entirely since it's a hand thrown grenade in the dark and burns down the neighbour's harvest causing them to starve in the winter. I have to resort to the pot of boiling oil at the top of the hay loft "Deus Lo Vult!" The boiling oil completely drenches two men and cause them to scream in agony and writhe on the ground, racked with incomprehensible pain. The screams of pain frightens horses in nearby stables. Draw sword and charge the last terrified infidel. He bleeds out with no one to assist him since this is Feudal Europe and nobody gives a shit. Just as the Magna Carta intended.

Hey Shad, I might have something fun for you to cover: In the Elder Scrolls Online "High Isle Launch" cinematic trailer, there's a knight with a sword that looks hilariously "fantasy thick". On its own that wouldn't be interesting, but what fascinates me is that they actually animated it as such as well. He fights with the full weight of his overweight sword, and it's actually a really cool short fight choreography. I think it'd be really cool if you were to do a fight dissection of it, like how you did Anakin VS Obi-Wan. (Bonus: In the "Legacy of the Bretons" cinematic set immediately before it, there's a sword scabbard design at 1:56 I think you might find very interesting.)

I have an idea for a kind of back scabbard for the Titan Sword: I would attach four hooks in a rectangular pattern onto a wooden panel. This panel could be worn diagonally on the back. The hooks would have a narrow, not curved shape and would protrude from the panel in a 30 degrees angle. You could hang the Titan Sword onto the hooks by the two horizontal lines in the center of the sword, that are created trough the cutouts. The specific shape of the hooks would allow the Titan Sword to be easily drawn by leading it out and not catch on it. The shape of the hooks would also lead to the Titan Sword fitting very tight on the back because gravity would pull the sword against the wooden panel.

Although if you would really make this I think you would have to experiment a little with how longs the hooks would need to be and how high on the back they would need to be placed.

Guts from berserk had a kind of demon tail looking scabbard that you would unhook at the top so you could roll it about the body. Only the point was sheathed. It was awkward to resheath I’m sure.

the second may be the easiest, but the first one has more potential than i think you realized. Instead of hooks like you used think about something like the hook on a cloths rack that it just kinda sits into. They would also be directly attached to the 'belt' rather than on an extended strap. the hooks you used were inflexible and not shaped correctly, you need something almost like a binder clip but bent outward, so that you can force it past the clip, into its holster and then force it out again.

Shad, you might consider quick releases for firearm slings from manufacturers such as Magpul. They have a pushbutton release in the middle, and a rectangular ring that allows it to mount on the end of a belt. With these on both ends of the sling, you could release one end, pull the sword over your shoulder, then push the other button and drop the entire sling so it's not flopping around and hitting you in the face while you're trying to swing your sword. You could let it fall on the ground to retrieve after the battle, or fix the sling itself to your back so you just need to grab the ends and reattach them to the sword. You can get sockets designed to be glued into oldschool wood stocks or panel mounted into flat material. The socket can also be as simple as a hole of the correct diameter drilled into a sturdy sheet of metal of the correct thickness to engage the ball locks.

I think the key to making a way to carry the sword, involves making a specific armor for it. Maybe the armor needs a integrated piece on the back, so it will never move or shift, and that will work as a guide or locking mechanism.

Hm, perhaps a particularly strong magnet setup that is mounted in the armor and has a button that turns them off/on? Kinda like Master Chief? Since it is controlled when it is on, you don't risk random stuff getting stuck. Then again, you could engage it mid-combat to magnetize your opponent's strike against the back of your armor...

Definitely first one with simple changes: 1st: Have some small board on your back with hooks 2nd. Hooks have to be loose 3rd. Hook your sword little bit higher so you would "Unsheath" it with that central bar in a middle of your sword With this sword sheathing would be easy as you have central connections you can just drop your sword with. Unsheathing would be easy as hooks would be loose ( I guess it would be easy to steal your sword in that case) And walking around would be easier as with board your sword would stay more rigidly on your back and it would stay higher without touching the ground

Great section about Hello Fresh there. Grandiose idea to use the giant sword as a table and cutting board!

Option 2 looks like the most practical option. That said, the first way of using option 3 looked very similar to using a couched lance. It might be reasonable to use option 2 in a similar method where you hold the free end of belt to keep it in a couched position, then you could easily let go of it to use the sword as a sword instead of in the couched position.

The last attachment the way Shad is doing it the first time with the blade pointing forward, can be useful for blind warrior or navigating in the dark. Also with the advantage of just running toward your target with the blade already pointing at them thrust and take it out at the same time.

This is the first information video / complex language video I have ever listen to. When I was studying english (not as my first language) I couldn't even understand what audio and video say if it wasn't simple and slow such as the "Daily Dose Of Internet" when I saw your video and decided to hope on and at last see what's he doing, I used to let it run in the background while I was doing something else in the PC and also sometimes I have tried to understand what are you saying and then... For absolutely nowhere I could understand "listening" to english. Now I'm studying for doing the PET exam.

The second one with a quick release method at the handle would be best. You could physically pull the sword from the belt as you were doing, then unfasten the strap from the handle once it was off your back, as you said. When the battle is over, simply find and collect your strap and re-attach it. Alternatively, you could use the same method, only have it fastened to the shoulder so when you pull the sword free the belt hangs from your shoulder. Capes and skirts seldom got in the way in combat, so a dangling strap most likely would not either. That way you have the ability to re-fasten it no matter where the fighting ends.

Imagine if there was like a retractable seatbelt mechanism that could reel in from the belt and click into the crossguard of the sword? And then to keep the sword in place, you could have it hook around the otherside somehow?

Thought the same, but isn't quite fantasy compatible is it? To be fair, reliable quick release mechanisms aren't either, but they can be made to look the part easier IMO. I think there are two options. One, the two-quick-release methods, with the strap mainly tied to the sword - but that also means the strap may fall down and get lost - not a big deal according to them, I think it is. Two, a permanent shoulder belt like in the first one, with a quick-release at the bottom like in the second (unhooks by force or a tap, so could be a simple wrapped leather strap), and a hook at the top like in the first, but designed for this purpose (alternatively another quick-release, but hook has higher potential there IMO). Nothing flopping around, nothing falling off. One strap attached to the bottom of the shoulder belt (or the normal belt) has the quick-release at the sword, and then you can get it out fast since the hook should not interfere. Hooking in should be easy at the top, especially if you have the hook on a short strap attached to the belt, not the belt itself, and then quick release at the bottom. Hook should be large and open, so it doesn't fall out easily but also doesn't impede hooking or releasing.

I was thinking the same thing. Kinda. Instead of reeling the strap in, I would have the non-retracting side be fixed to the middle of the sword, so when it retracts, the strap would be pulled flat against the sword. Granted, that would probably interfere with the sword's usability, but we can't know for certain unless they try it. Also, I hadn't gotten as far as the mechanism that would retract it, and a seatbelt spring is perfect. It's familiar, it's easy to use, it has a built-in locking mechanism, and I'm sure no one would mind if you went to a scrap yard and cut one out of a car that was either decommissioned or scheduled to get scrapped (making it easy to replace, too).

Might need a stronger spring to keep it from slopping around, both on the back and when retracted. The torsion spring in a seat belt actually gets stronger the more you pull out, which might or might not be desired. I think all of these issues are solvable, maybe even without much modification, just cut the belt short enough that it maxes out when you're hanging it, and so that when it's on the sword, it's still "pulled out" far enough that the spring is strong. Might want to get the belt lighter as well to prevent slopping, which is fine since it doesn't quite need to deccelerate a human from 100 to 0 in a few milliseconds - unless you fall in a shaft and somehow rely on your sword to not fall, in which case, tough luck. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea, though it will always be atleast a bit annoying. Hope they give it a try.

Its gonna be good fun watching the progress of this big project.

Second method is the best. simple, fast, practical, has style, looks amazing on the draw.

For the quick release method you could use rope to make quick release knots on both the waist and crossguard. That would let you secure the weapon and remove both connections easily, not to mention if the rope is lost or damaged it would way easier to replace than something specifically constructed.

I say you revisit the axe loop from God of War on this idea, making an open ring that fits further down the blade and gravity keeps the sword down on the ring. The Titan sword could excel at the with its waisted ricasso in its design

This is probably the first video of which I didn't skip the promotion. I find the cooking on the big sword absolutely brilliant.

Em Shad, before you proceed to start making the carbon fibre large sword, you need triangle structures to keep it durable at hitting solid objects.

For method 2, a quirk of it I like is using the horizontal bars along the length to grab and control the blade without drawing it. And for method 3, it was clipping the ground a little; have you tried putting the top part of the stap not on the handle, but on the vertical bar inside the shoulder rest? It would put the blade quite a bit higher, maybe too much for ceilings, idk, but you're basically just drawing it like a normal sized sword and that point using the inside bar as a faux handle for the motion.

I've thought about this for a PF2 character that is small, yet wields Large sized 2h weapons. My conceptual design is a pair of hooks up around the shoulder blades of a backplate/cuirass combined with a sword with designed cutouts that would fit over and be hung by the hooks.

Seat belt make it like a seat belt! If it's set more in the in-between fantasy and realism (as real as you can get I guess) maybe attach a rachet of sorts that auto retracts to either the cross guard or the first cross support (just above I guess it'd be the "blade handle"? The vertical bar in the center) and have a hook or clip on the end that attaches to your belt. Quick release, strap management, and if you put the mechanism on the cross support it'll sit higher and maybe help with the "area of effect" when walking around and can still be drawn easily by grabbing the center bar

I'm a 3d artist and I do a lot of weapon design, I spent some time trying to find out where the idea of wrapping cloth or smth around the blade in fantasy came from. I came to the conclusion that (aside from just adding more visual interest) the idea behind it was to keep the cloth covered in oil and to protect from the elements, I'm wondering if Shad'll end up doing it with this too. Also first seemed the best tbh

with the finished sword i hope whatever method is figured out somehow ties into handle wraps up and down the blade. because i feel that'll help it be more solidly attached and supported, as well as make it feel like a real fantasy weapon that has been lived in and used by an adventurer.

If you go with the hook and belt design, use a tool bracket for the top hook. Like the two pronged hooks used for holding shovels/hammers/axes in the tool shed. Riveted to a belt instead of screwed to the wall. Or (a bit cheaper) use a two pronged coat hook to do the same. The coat hooks are what i use for hanging my long sword on my wall.

You can fix the swinging belt problem by using a ring with a slightly bigger diameter than a sword pummel. Just put it on a hilt and it will stay there due to the belt tension, so when you release the other side, the ring will simply slide off. Im not an English speaker so its hard for me to explain the details, but I hope you got what i mean. I once did a similar project just for fun and it worked well. Hello from Ukraine!

For the giant sword (not titan sword) I recommend you look at the character, Welf Crozzo, from "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?" The way he carries his sword is basically exactly like how you said in 1:01 where he has a square cut out near the hilt and off to the side, and then there's just a hook on his back and he just lifts and done, easy on, easy off. (ofc you do need to put a hole in the sword for it to work.)

if its a metal sword maybe you could even use it as a frying pan. Personally I'm a fan of attachment method 2, having a giant sword with a dangly bit is just so incredibly silly, that any universe where that is the best option is a universe I want to live in. Might need to make some dnd art of this.

Here's an idea that could help prevent the sword from sticking out too far and colliding with nearby objects. Attach a mini sheath, just for the tip of the sword, to the back or side of your boot, then have an attachment at the waist that can work as a pivot point. Basically the sword becomes part of your leg. Although it might be difficult to reach the handle since it would rest mostly vertically.

I don't think you'd want a heavy long object weighing your foot down. While you are standing still it might be less strenuous than any other option, but once you try to move, you'd be limiting yourself to limping speed. You can try it yourself by balancing a broom, snow shovel or other long tool on your toes. Also, if that sword ever slipped out of the scabbard, you have a 50-50 chance of loosing that foot.

i really loved this video. this how to video, was very good in helping, to think about a problem and comeing up with solutions.

Haven't seen shad videos in a while. Then this morning i saw a youtube short of the holding a giant sword.

Personally, I was a fan of the third method, my only notes would be some kind of quick release mechanism on each end of the strap-- this would give it the carrying security of the third method, and the speedy idle-to-drawn-and-ready time of the second method. Point is, unless you go with hooks, you'll probably want a quick-release system at each end to both get the weapon out quickly, and get the 'tail' out of the way just as quickly.

@@trollconfiavel no, then you have crap swinging around in two different places, or around until it falls off on its own. With two quick-release points mounted on the sword, you cut down on the wasted time both drawing and stowing the weapon

Dammit I was just about to turn in for the night but of course I want to know how to wear a giant sword.

the best method is like that of Guts. A leather strap on the back with a spot for the tip of the blade to set at the bottom, and a hook near the top of the shoulders to catch the blade, with a slip out design similar to Shads other back scabbard.

For a quick release method: Put a hook or an oblong ring fixed into position on the hilt that can hook onto an attatchment point behind your shoulder and a short strap or buckle on the third rung that you could loop around or hook to your belt or an extension on your belt.

At this point just run a restaurant Shad. Your cooking looks great. Also, I feel like horse back would be a very interesting thing to consider with this especially.

I think one way to get around the one issue with the second option's (or third option's) belt flopping around would be to make it retractable like a seatbelt. That way, the moment the sword is "unsheathed," the user can have a quick release trigger on their belt and the sheathe's belt retracts into the sword automatically. This can also provide more reusability since the sheathe belt wouldn't be out and about during sword use. A same method could be used for the third method as well, wherein the belt tight up upon unsheathing; essentially hugging the sword face (This can also be achieved with an elastic material in lieu of using a retracting mechanism). That being said, not sure how big the seat belt's retracting mechanism is and how one could adjust it or different heights, but hey, a "ye olde seatbelt" could be worth looking into. ʅ(°⊱,°)ʃ Keep at it!

Considering the size of a tape measure, I’d imagine the part that holds the retracted belt could be pretty bulky on the side of a sword

When I was younger, I designed a giant sword, and I find the similarities super interesting. I had a shoulder curve that was flared for extra chopping leverage and handle mid spine for half-sword/quick recovery, but these things pushed my design to be single edged. With the carry I went with a sling with a quick detach buckle similar to a military '3-point' sling. The sliglng would have an elastic band to 'bunch' up the slack to reduce it snagging on things when unclipped. All in all I find this design process super interesting and cannot wait to see the a functional prototype!

Use a Seatbelt from a car! Push button quick release, And the strap would automatically retract out of the way!

Over the shoulder strap with 2 metal attach points with hook and spring mechanisms with a string connector that is connected the mechanisms that when you pull them the hooks open and when you stop pulling they close probably the best option imo

If you have the 3 option on the single shoulder you can just lift it up if someone one popped up at you. You wouldn't be able to do a lot of moves but you could keep your distance. Love you vids Shad

I do have a thought for storing it. Basically like a 1/16th sheath. It's attached to a belt at the waist, it only has an inch or two of the edges covered at the tip with one side solid up to the waist belt. You toss it over the shoulder lower it in place and then hang the upper part off a hook wither attached or strapped at about the shoulder. Either on the pauldron or the back cuirass.
