How To Use Your Spoon Knife Tutorial

Ғылым және технология

A quick tutorial video about how to use your spoon knife.
A spoon knife is one of the trickier things that a new carver will have to deal with. Here, I run through some basic cuts to get you guys started off.
I hope you enjoy and I hope you learn. If you think I've missed something, let me know in the comments!

One of the most clear demonstrations of the bowl hollowing with hook knife that I’ve seen. Great work! Thank you!!

Not sure if anyone else noticed the Ross from Friends ‘Pivot’ reference. Maybe it wasn’t intentional but it amused me anyway. Excellent tutorial. Thank you.

Very nice video, THANK YOU! BTW, you may want to use a Swedish lap vise. It is pretty simple & maybe safer than holding your work. All you need is a board, a way to carve/cut/drill some holes thru it & some cord, rope, or strap. Make holes in the board, some people use 2 & turn the board, run the cord thru the holes, make a loop & put your foot in it. Adjust the loop so w/ the board on your lap you use your foot to tighten the loop on your work & your foot hods it tight. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

Hi Owen - new spooncarver here. That's exactly the hook knife i've got so this demo was great. I'm struggling with hand strength a bit but i'm sure my hands will get stronger. It's a really addictive thing, this. I'd say the hook knife is possibly the most hazardous - it's the only one that's cut me so far. Terrific video - thanks!

Hello! I have the more 162 with Sharp Edge on both sides. And i always use pucjcuts, never the pullcuts. Im right handed.. it feels more natural to push for me. So i have been thinking om buying singelbladed 164 so i can get my finger at the spine for Harder cuts. But i see that i will have to buy the lefthanded to get the blade on the «right» side for me. Is this wrong? Should you always use the pullcuts? Any advantadges im missing?

Thanks for sharing your technique 👍 I think the second and third technique could work very well with a twca cam Have you ever used a twca cam with a strap I wonder if it is easier or harder to use with one. And if you ever (PLEASE 🙏😉) make a twca cam video maybe you could include the strap technique? Or do you know a good video I could not find any. Have a nice day 🖖

Could you do an actual bowl with this

  • @OwenThomaswoodcraft

Yes absolutely though it would take a while and is probably not the best tool for that job. A gouge would be much better for carving a bowl
