Carving A Cawl Spoon
A 'silent carving' video of how I carve my signature Cawl Spoon.
Apart from splitting out the blank, this is a FULL LENGTH video of me carving a spoon, by which i mean, this is just me working at my normal speed, not missing out anything.

Ta Fred. I appreciate the kindness 👍
I’m impressed, Owen! As a fellow master craftsman just now beginning to work with wood, your control of your tools was nothing short of inspirational. Thank you so much, man! Great stuff!!

Thank you Douglas. I appreciate the kind words. I hope you enjoy my future videos as much 👍
Beautiful work! I have watched your videos to learn carving techniques at least 10 times. Each view adds a little more information in my “ hard disk”. Would you be kind enough to demonstrate your sharpening techniques for the knives, axes and the adze? I think keeping the carving tools sharp is fundamental. As a pro you must be sharpening them on daily basis. We as amateurs could certainly benefit by watching.

Thanks Shailesh. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. Your suggestion is on my list of planned videos, I just haven't got to it yet 👍
Beautiful work! For curiosity's sake, what types of wood do you like to use for your green wood working?

I mostly work with sycamore and birch. Beech is great too and ash is fantastic for chairs. I'm using birch in this video
May I ask what do you use as a template as I have used card and broke very quickly
What is it he is listening to ? It sounds like an old movie in the background !!! This is the second KZread video I've noticed this week . Very strong cordless microphone maybe ?
hi owen, I truly enjoy your work. can you tell us about your tools? such as what size twc acam and how long is the handle?

Thanks Linda. I'll probably do a video on it at some point, but for now, I can say the twca cam is a 65mm made by Nic Westerman. The handle is about 12"

@@OwenThomaswoodcraft I love that tool. I have to get one sometime when the ships can dock and I can actually get it. Let's go Brandon!
That is real skill, especially those long planing cuts. I have not seen a cawl spoon out in the wild. How wide is that bowl?
@OwenThomaswoodcraft

Is about 2" across. Think of it like a soup spoon. Some of the old ones are larger than this but I make these to be a bit more modern

Is it just me or is someone sending Morse code messages thru this video? (Really nice work, btw.)

Thanks 🙏 the Morse code is probably some sort of interference with my mic. They are real sensitive
