Carving A Cawl Spoon

A 'silent carving' video of how I carve my signature Cawl Spoon.
Apart from splitting out the blank, this is a FULL LENGTH video of me carving a spoon, by which i mean, this is just me working at my normal speed, not missing out anything.

    Beautiful work! I have watched your videos to learn carving techniques at least 10 times. Each view adds a little more information in my “ hard disk”. Would you be kind enough to demonstrate your sharpening techniques for the knives, axes and the adze? I think keeping the carving tools sharp is fundamental. As a pro you must be sharpening them on daily basis. We as amateurs could certainly benefit by watching.

    I mostly work with sycamore and birch. Beech is great too and ash is fantastic for chairs. I'm using birch in this video

  • @OwenThomaswoodcraft

    Thanks Linda. I'll probably do a video on it at some point, but for now, I can say the twca cam is a 65mm made by Nic Westerman. The handle is about 12"

    That is real skill, especially those long planing cuts. I have not seen a cawl spoon out in the wild. How wide is that bowl?

  • @OwenThomaswoodcraft

    @OwenThomaswoodcraft

    Is about 2" across. Think of it like a soup spoon. Some of the old ones are larger than this but I make these to be a bit more modern
