Thing is, I don’t have a stash anyways because every time I buy yarn I’m either having to justify it to parents or telling parents I’m going to buy yarn…I kind of wish I could have a stash later.

I'm so in love with the sudden amount of stash-busting videos from all sorts of creators right now! It feels like there's a new yarn everyone's gotta have lately but I'm all against this consumerism phase we're in and want to focus on busting out the stash I have rather than wasting money making it grow larger. as a new crocheter, it’s hard to not fall into overconsumption especially with yarn. i’ve learned a good habit is keeping track of which projects i’ll ACTUALLY make, complete and use/ be proud of in some way. for example, i never use cotton, but i bought a 250g skein of a cotton/polyester blend to make a reusable shopping bag and i live how it’s coming out! for $10 i got a reusable bag and saved money by not having to buy more bags when shopping and buying a reusable bag. i recently started a blanket of all my leftover yarn that’s too big to use for stuffing amigurumi! i hope these habits carry on into the future, because honestly if anyone is struggling with overconsumption, the best thing that worked for me to help was to make things i’ll actually use/need that way you don’t have to buy from a company and you can feel proud that you’ve made something that you can use for a long time! like clothes, socks, shopping bags, etc!

Here is an idea to use up small amounts of different colored yarn. My granddaughter is graduating from high school on Friday and just got her drivers license as well. She requested that I make her a granny square steering wheel cover and seat belt cover in springy, pastel colors. So I made her one and tied it all together with a white border and it is adorable! You can use any square that you like. Grannies, sunburst grannies etc. I used a flower type granny square and I am quite happy with the results. I used the magic knot method to change colors so I didn't have a massive amount of ends to sew in. I imagine these would sell pretty well if you do craft shows.

I’m making Wheelchair Wraps for my summer project, and then donating them this fall to a local nursing home near me. It’s a perfect project for acrylic yarn, and I’m using both worsted and DK weight. Once you know the pattern, you can just hum right along! (And the wraps are perfect for those who are seated as they don’t get in the way, and are easily washed.)

Great destash ideas! Knit Picks Palette yarn is great for amigurumi, especially when you have limited space for display. The toys work up great in this yarn but are a nice smaller size. It just takes some getting used to working on a smaller scale. Those mice are so adorable, I have to look up the pattern. Also, it makes perfect sense to buy one ball of yarn so you can destash three others. Go for it!

Another great stash buster is crochet flower bouquets! Especially if you have small amounts of yarns. There are so many different flower sizes and pattern complexities that you can really make it work with anything. Collect enough of them, arrange into a bouquet, and give it as a gift! I’m currently busting my stash by making individual flowers to tack onto a curtain of vines above my windows

Thanks for sharing all your helpful ideas from your yarn stash & projects Elise. What I’ve started to do is every time I purchase yarn that’s a ‘must have’ with a project in mind, I purchased some clear plastic bags that are zippered, placed the yarn in it with a ‘To Do’ note which includes the name of the crochet project along with the KZread video tutorial for reference & crochet hook size. This helps me keep track of upcoming crochet projects. I also try to include a photo of it in the plastic bag & I do a sample such as a granny square if that’s the project that I want to work on next & so on.

The only reason I am doing low buys every year or trying... Is I hit a zone and a time of life where I can't see what I have easily... I discovered “the felted button” years ago and I love her work! Loved the photo of you and Toni.❤ so I got to see two of my favorite “yarnies” together! Early this year I too made a list of patterns and yarn to start taking my stash down. Now I’m making baskets, holding 3-6 or 7 strands of yarn. Absolutely love them!!! Can be a little stressful on my arms and hands. So I had to slow down. Already sold one of the two I made. 👍

It is so fun and contagious to see how enthusiastic you are about yours Stash busting projects!! In the last year I've been donating all the yarns I had for over a year and never used!!! I gave to my " yarny friends" in our weekly knitting / crochet group, some others to charity, and some to a local school who have a knitting- crochet group for kids under 12 yrs old 🥰 But as someone who crochet 99.9 % of the times amigurumis, I would like you to make the same type of video , but with amigurumis projects please, smalls quick one but also bigger ones ( they take more yarns!!!😉) Thank you for you always excellent and inspiring videos!

I have spent the last year or so trying to stash bust and i really feel good! I was never one to have a huge stash so it wasn't long before I was seeing the results. Now i'm down to 5 or 6 skeins of cotton and my holiday colors. I typically keep a selection of reds, greens, blues, and grey/silver because every year I make ornaments for my friends and coworkers so my holiday yarns don't really get busted like regular yarn 😊. It's a really good feeling!

I got a lot of scrap yarn from buying it off of someone. I don’t like most of the type or feel of the scrap yarn but learned to just deal with it and make interesting tiny projects with it. It’s quite enjoyable figuring out how to finish yarn you don’t like and making it into something interesting

I’m in the same boat named “yarn abundance.” I remember the days when I might have a spare skein or two, but to date I have so much yarn that I have filled over 12 totes, and that’s after purging and gifting a decent quantity. Fortunately they are separated by fiber content, which helps, but I have this need to knit and crochet my way through them. I’ll be checking out the patterns you’ve recommended in hopes of reducing the hoard.

A couple of years ago I bought a ton of loops and threads impeccable to make a temperature blanket. I have tried every year for about 3 years to start one but I finally accepted this year that I have ADHD and I’m never going to have the attention span to do a temperature blanket. So I’ve been slowly chipping away at it. 😅 right now I’m working on an infinity fidget cube. When I first started crocheting, I could only do granny squares so I brought a mix of different yarn makes some were so cheap and itchy. I stopped doing that and stick to a brand I know and like. I mainly make blankets but just started doing amigurumi. I realised the other day that I haven’t brought any yarn since last August, I’ve just recently finished my latest blanket. So started to look at what to start next, I tend to only buy yarn for a project, but I do have a bit of a stash. I always go through that before buying any yarn to see what colours for a project I already have. Then make a list of the rest I need, any left overs go in box to be made into amigurumi.

Dear lady, love your enthusiasm in this video. It's ok. God doesn't punish us for our love of yarn. At least, I hope, he doesn't. I don't consider it over-buying, I consider it a collection. Some people collect stamps or figurines, I collect yarn. I'm thinking of making blankets and shawls and selling or giving them away, also. I made a blanket for friend that moved away and she was thrilled with it. It was just a variety of similar yarns from my stash (a lot of Lion brand wool-ease). I've always found that one of the great pleasures of life is just making something for a friend and seeing their smile when I present it to them. I am also working on making myself sweaters, even with mixed brands of yarn. I taught my husband to knit and crochet and we used to give hats and scarfs away to our waitresses at our favorite restaurant. Lots of fun. Bought myself some yarn from Expression Fiber arts, It's glorious but the most expensive yarn I've ever crocheted, it's going to be truly a great sweater. I live in rural area and often work outside so most of my clothes are rather practical and country-fied, even my sweaters get a lot of wear and are simple in design. Granny squares remind me of my mother... 40-50 yrs ago she was making wonderful blankets and clothes... loved her work.
