When i try to start EMI checker or Plane Resonance Analyzer i get the following error message "A license file (license.dat) doesn't exist in the following directory" Why would i get this?

Yep need a license to use this. That is not mentioned in any of the videos. So not very useful out of the box.

Hey Zach! each time I can't help to suspect the EMI and SI PI aspects, so these kinds of videos sound to me like relaxation videos, thank you very much :) Do you think to start a project from scratch so that we see the evaluation in every aspect of design? ( It would be great a project about a gps tracker or kinda som )

Well there is one particular GPS tracker that I've modified from an open source project.... might be interesting to take a look at it in these tools!

Hey Zach I want to understand how we can solve the ground bounce in the PCB. I am facing a problem with the ground plane, the voltage between two ground which are MCU GND and Gate Driver GND is a deflection of 2.5v to 3v while disengagement of mosfet.

  • @Zachariah-Peterson

Are you sure this is ground bounce? It sounds like you have a floating ground on one component for no reason, and the floating ground has developed a potential offset with respect to the remaining system ground. Most likely just use a single ground plane unless you have a reason to have an "MCU GND" and a ""gate driver GND"

For the example problem (maybe not for the rest of the board), it looked like there was plenty of room to spread the traces farther apart. Would running extra ground traces between some of them solve the issue without going to extra layers? Or at least doing that to bridge such gaps? (In case only some portions of the lines had enough extra room for a ground trace in between.)

Placing stitching via would solve the return path discontinuity without adding any extra GND layer. The concern with running signals in a batch is the crosstalk due to inductive coupling between signals. Rule of thumb: gap > track width x 1,5-2

It's a licenced extension - good luck trying to find a price.

This annoys me hugely. I don't have time to evaluate products and tools (and deal with sales reps) when I know management will laugh me out of the office when I finally get a quote that only NASA or Boeing could afford.

  • @unprintable469

Actually wasted 16 minutes after recognizing that you need a license for this extension, and unfortunately, they (NEC) don't even communicate a price. So it's based on what? I am pretty annoyed... 😐

Actually, this is not true because you can learn many things without using this extension in this video. using more gnd planes improves performance, analysing the return path is not to do with the license.

@@myetis1990adding additional layers to a stack-up is a quick, easy and expensive solution. In real life it is only done when the product is already close to production and there is no time for layout modification and the additional cost is unavoidable. There are other techniques to solve EMI concerns on a PCB without increasing the cost of PCB. Bear in mind this video is an Altium capability demo, not an EMI webinar.
