How to use the Auto Hold function in your BMW - BMW How-To

In this video, BMW How-To shows you how to use the Auto Hold function of your parking brake. The parking brake is used to prevent your BMW from rolling when it is parked. Additionally, Automatic Hold is available on BMWs with a Steptronic transmission. The system provides assistance by automatically applying and releasing the brake, for example in stop-and-go traffic or preventing the vehicle from rolling back on sloping ground. In order to activate Automatic Hold, the car needs to be in drive-ready state. Press the button on the middle console, the LED is illuminated. In the instrument cluster, the indicator lamp illuminates green (AUTO H). Once the brake has been applied, the vehicle is secured from rolling as soon as the indicator light is illuminated green. To drive off, press the accelerator pedal. The brake is released automatically and the indicator lamp for the parking brake is no longer illuminated. When the vehicle is being held by Automatic Hold and drive-ready state is switched off or the vehicle is exited, the parking brake is automatically applied. The indicator lamp for the parking brake switches from green to red.

As a car wash attendant, this feature is the bane of my existence, because it comes on by itself and no one ever knows how to turn it off. I found this video while Google-ing how to turn it off. That being said, thank you very much for this video. It came in very useful today.

Is it bad for my brakes to keep it on always? I drive on the city everyday with alot of traffic lights.
For BMWs with this button, Is the setting remembered between drives or do you need to enable it every time you jump into the car? In my M235i, I don't have this button but I do have the functionality and it's always enabled.

What kind of gearbox is it, is it a 7-speed steptronic double-clutch, if so, can I turn off the engine in D or R mode, then the gearbox will automatically switch to P mode and the parking brake will be activated.

It doesn't need activation in my Mercedes. Do I have to press every time I start the engine ?
I came here to figure out how to apply the parking brake on my 2022 8 series and learned about an auto hold feature lol

Since passing my test in 1983, I’ve almost exclusively driven automatics and have never used the handbrake in any of them; I merely put the transmission in Park. Autos’ inherent idle speed “creep” means the vehicle is held on all but the steepest hills anyway so why do we suddenly need an Auto Hold function?

Auto Hold is not used for parking. It's used when you are stopped at, for example, a red light. After coming to a complete stop in traffic, the Auto Hold feature is engaged, which means you can take your foot off the break pedal without having to apply constant pressure to it or putting the car in Park to prevent the car from rolling. (Who put their car in Park at a red light anyway?) It's one of those unnecessary but very convenient feature for lazy people (like me).
My 2021 x2 thay i got for 42k doesn't have this feature but my 2018 civic that i got for 25k has it lol

Where is my idrive 7 update. Downloaded it, but it would not activate and install. It’s now disappeared. Clunky absolute trash. Fix it please.

It’s poor that this feature is not standard in all models . Standard feature in even basic vws ..
We have a VW Tiguan, but auto hold works the same

I have a Tiguan just now as well and agree 100%. its so handy. rented a van and drove it without auto hold. you get used to it so quickly and you miss it even quicker!

I picked up my cars with manual gearbox and I have auto hill hold function and rev matching in sport mode!
This function is very dagerous to other drivers on the road!

Volkswagen cars turn on e parking brake automatically when you open the door while shift lever in D (drive).

Is it supposed to stay on forever? I can't turn mine off, disgraceful.
The Auto hold isn't even available in the 218i. It's only available in automatic transmissions. I miss my old VW Passat to be honest. BMW in general has more new-fangled networking and app features, however, VW in general make the driving experience a lot more by incorporating features that are plain common sense and good driving habits.
Please, I love this car. You don't lose anything if they give me one car ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

Terrible feature. My car had this engaged from the dealership when i got it, and i thought something was wrong when i put the car into drive and it didn’t move 😆
