How to: Use the Audio Input on the Korg Electribe 2 | feat. the Roland SE-02

Музыка

Hey guys! I've been asked a few times in the past, how to use the external audio input on the Electribe 2. Well, I thought this would be a good subject for a tutorial video in case there others out there who don't know how to do this. ;) I also demo a few of the different ways the Electribe can process external audio (Roland SE-02) and apply it's built-in effects.
Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy the video. Thanks for watching, littleBIGsynths :)

Great video showing how these two can be play together in different ways. I recently got an ES2 and my Roland SH-01A hasn't been getting much attention because I really like the synths on the ES2 and I also wanted to learn this one first. I can't wait to do more experiments with them soon, thanks for the inspiration!

After watching your tutorial I decided to do the same and feed the audio out from my Roland SE-02 into my Korg Electribe 2 Music Production, and connected the sync output from the Korg into the SE-02, so I was running a sequence on the Roland and drums on the Korg. Great being able to use the reverb in the Korg. Next I plan to use midi out from the Korg into the SE-02 so everything can be sequenced from the Korg. Interesting times.

Electribe 2 ok packs a lot of excellent quality KORG features from the sq1 and kaos pad into such a usable package with nice internal sounds not cringeworthy or noisy patches. I’ve only got a cv synth but 2 midi ones and a drum module on the way could control them all with this instead of a daw. I like the sound and workflow. Maybe I’ll try score editors at a later date..

So I learnt a nice little trick from your volca step trigger video earlier and created something real nice using that. I use an electribe sampler as a sequencer and you've just shown me something else I didn't know about that(routing it back in to the audio input and using the effects on it). You really are a great source of knowledge for a novice. Your opinion would be helpful if you have one. I have a minilogue, was the first 'proper' synth I bought, had it about 4 months but I'm not sure it's for me. I was going to get the se-02 but went for the minilogue as it had a keyboard(even though I have no real keyboard skills!). I'm thinking I'm gonna sell my minilogue and buy either an se-02 or maybe an sh-01A, I'm into techno/electro/house, any views would be helpful.

  • @XeneiFana

adamoliver82 Yeah, man! The Electribe is actually a really powerful tool. I love it! I think the SH01a would be great. It has the polyphonic mode so you won't miss out on playing chords, plus it is a much cheaper price tag. You will probably have some money left over. Lol On the other hand, the SE-02 is a remarkable synth and although it can play chords, it is still capable of creating some amazing sounds. I love my SE-02. I definitely think it has been one of my best purchases to date. It is a tiny powerhouse! :) Ps. Sorry for the late reply.

Basically i want the freeze pedal to be modulated.OR is there a better way? Obviously i guess the answer is to just try it but i thought I'd ask first.

Hey! No problem! Thanks for watching. 🙂 I am not familiar with the Behringer Crave... but if you are simply trying to get them to play together with a synced tempo, you will most likely just use the MIDI OUT of the Electribe into the MIDI IN of the Crave. The Crave might be set to run on its internal clock by default, so you will need to set it to receive an external MIDI clock. If you are trying to get both of them to play out of a single set of speakers or headphones: you will need an audio mixer to combine the 2 audio output signals OR you can feed the Craves audio into the AUDIO IN of the Electribe; which will allow you to hear both devices from a single audio output. Hope all this makes some sense.

+FUNKBEAST HI! Well, you can't necessarily record the external sounds into the Electribe... you can only sequence the external gear. Select a "part"/pad. Each pad sends data on individual channels. So pad 1 = channel 1, pad 2 = channel 2, etc, etc. Set your external synth to match the part/pad that you want and then make sure you set the oscillator Type to "audio in". If you still don't hear anything... make sure to use the oscillator edit knob to increase the gain. You should be able to play the pads in keyboard mode and hear the external synth. Once it's all setup to play via keyboard mode... You can then input and record your sequence and it will play the external synth via the sequencer. Hope this makes sense. I may do in depth video on how to sequence External gear. So stay tuned. :)

  • @littleBIGsynths

    @littleBIGsynths

    5 жыл бұрын

Interesting question. As far as the pedal board is concerned, I'm not sure how you would or what you would achieve by doing this. Do you possibly mean running the Electribe through your pedal board to use the effects? The Electribe might not have enough gain to push a mic into a decent volume... but if it did... you would still need a microphone that has a 1/4" cable with a 3.5mm adapter in order to get the signal into the E2 to begin with. An alternative approach would be to run microphone into a mixer that has preamps and phantom power, and then run the "tape out" signal into the E2. This will ensure that the mic at least has enough power going into the E2. Just make sure to keep an eye on the "clipping" indicator to make sure the signal is not overwhelming the E2. Hope some of this info could be useful. Thanks for watching

You might be able to get microphone audio through the audio input... dont know if it will have enough volume to cut through the mix or not. As far as looping, definitely cant on the synth version. Perhaps the sampler version? I'm not completely familiar with the sampler version. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! 🙂

No. Microphones are not LINE level. You must amplify the mic first, them plug the output of the amp into the line in.

+Christian Kenne Totally! :) If your keyboard has an audio output than I don't see why not. Lol The Electribe will proccess any incoming audio. ;) The only thing is that you may need a 1/4" to 1/8" cable or adapter. (Electribe uses a mini jack input and I'm sure your keyboard had 1/4" outputs... but I may be wrong. Hope I helped. :)

+Christian Kenne Always happy to help! :) I don't think the Electribe is capable of recording external gear and playing it back. Don't quote me on that though. I am like %99 sure. I will look into this a bit more, because someone else asked me the same question recently.

No worries! Always glad to help. 🙂 Im sure you can do that by using a stereo breakout cable or you could also just use a mixer of some sort to combine the audio together... BUT either way, you wouldnt be able to apply different FX to each connected device without affecting the other. Hope that kinda makes sense. Lol

Great vid. Is it possible to assign each channel/pad on the Electribe to a different effect and then use the mute / unmute to use as sort of an easy effects station for live use? Also any input on how it could be used as a fx send ? I tried that and it made my mix redline every time I used a send knob.

Thank you! 🙂 I am certain you can switch FX... but I'm not quite sure about the FX send. That sounds like a really good ide though. I will have to try that out right away. I will let you know. 👍

+Christian Kenne Alright, I'll try and break it down. To get started, set your synth or keyboard to MIDI channel 1. Make sure the output from your device is connected to the input of the electribe. On the electribe: select pad 1. Press record and then using the "keyboard" mode, play any note. (Hold that note for the entire duration of 16 steps. *if you go to "sequencer mode, you should see all of the steps lit up. At this point you should have a single sustained note. Now change the oscillator type to "audio in thru". Now you want to play some notes on your synth/keyboard and look to see if you can see any activity in the electribe lcd display. You should see a audio level indicator. Using the oscillator "edit" knob, increase the gain to hear the incoming audio. At this point, you should have incoming audio on part 1/pad 1. You should be able to now apply master and insert fx to the incoming audio. I hope this all made sense and works out for you. Let me know. :)

But you have a gate on/off after every 16th step. So you can not really have a drone or pad without a short break. So for me this is not working.

I dont get the point of Sample 17 Audio In Mn...Your video was great. However is it not possible to record that way? Like nothing you played could be recorded or saved without sampling as you regularly would.

  • @littleBIGsynths

This is the synth version of the electribe. There are no sampling capabilities on this version. The external audio input is simply used for processing audio (filter, FX, etc) You can not record any external sounds... but you can create and store sequences that can control external gear. Sequencing, in combination with the audio input, can be very fun and really useful. 👍 Hope I didnt stay too far from your question. 🙂

No problem at all. 😁 I dont think there is any difference in hardware between the two... it's just different firmware. So, yes, In theory... all you would need to do is swap the firmware and you should be golden. 🤔 lol Not worth the risk IMO. I prefer the synth version anyways. It has a pretty great synth engine. 👍

It's not terribly good at altering sound passed through its oscillator. Despite being fully stereo capable. I expected more. Though it's got plenty of other cons as a standalone synth
