How to use NeilMed Sinus Rinse at home for nasal irrigation - including practical demonstration

In this video Doctor O'Donovan demonstrates how to use the NeilMed sinus rinse kit at home, including what you should use it for, how to use it, frequently asked questions (such as how often to use it) and possible side effects. Another common brand name is the Net Pot.
Nasal irrigation is a safe and easy way to rinse your sinuses. It can help relieve symptoms related to a sinus infection, allergies, a cold or other upper respiratory conditions. Neti pots, rinse bottles and pre-filled containers are all excellent options if you want to try nasal irrigation.

This is an absolute game changer. I’ve had a really bad bout of sinusitis and a very chesty cough. The very first time I used it I was amazed and the amount of gunk that came out of my nostrils! That was all going down the back of my throat to my chest! What a relief. I woke the next morning and my nose was still clear. I used it 2/3 times a day and things very quickly cleared up. I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it (too queasy) but it was easy, strangely satisfying and definitely put me firmly on the road to recovery. This is a very informative video and shows how simple and effective the NeilMed kit is. Buy it!

I have been using this for many years. I was surprised that the demo just shows rinsing one side and then the other. What I have found effective is to rinse one side a couple times, wait 10 seconds or so, then blow my nose gently into tissue. Then repeat on the other side and blow my nose again. Then repeat back and forth until the solution is gone. I think gently blowing the solution out helps quite a bit.

Thank you. I loved the video. I have suffered sinus issues for 50 years. Before using this, I always had to go on antibiotics all the time. Keeping sinuses washed during a cold mostly prevents needing drugs.. I went to my Dr with an infection, and he gave me an antibiotic solution to add to the water and rinse, and it worked. I just hate taking antibiotics. Happy irrigating.😀

Total game-changer and so simple to use! The first few times, it's a bit weird to be sending water into our nose but we get used to it very quickly. It's not uncomfortable at all once you get the hang of it. I used to develop full-blown sinusitis regularly each winter (living in Canada). Since using this product on the recommendation of my doctor, I have not had a sinus infection in years. I use it at the first signs of congestion or even when getting a sore throat signaling that I am fighting "something". Haven't had to take antibiotics in years. For those afraid the water will burn, don't be: the solution is amazing and doesn't burn even if you have a lot of inflammation in the nasal passages.

Always good to rinse the nasal cavity with such a rinse even if one does not have overt allergies. Think of the nose as our body's air filter. Unfortunately, we do not have the luxury of twisting it off and rinsing it like some HVAC filters. This is as close as it gets to washing the particulates that may settle on the lining of the nose which may cause congestion and postnasal drip. Of note, I would stress use of distilled water, and ensuring proper cleaning, making sure all 3 parts are disassembled with each cleaning.

I've had thirteen sinus surgeries (for reoccurring polyps) and rinse twice/day with two packages and one vial of budesonide--at the direction of my ENT. I use the NeilMed bottle and pre-mixed packages. I gently squirt a portion of the mixture into one nostril, stop squeezing and hold for ten seconds. I alternate nostrils four times, then use half of the remaining mixture on each nostril. I find this really gets rid of crusties. When I drain, I first tilt my head forward, then gently blow until the flow from both nostrils becomes a drip. Next, I tilt my head to one side, about ninety degrees and blow out gently. I repeat this for the opposite nostril. This drains my maxillary sinuses. Next, I gently blow my nose, and I'm done. I wait a half hour, then use Xhance. I have been polyp-free for four and a half years, now. Before, at four and a half years out, I would be completely blocked. Rinsing sinuses works. So does Xhance. I thought I'd share this with you and and your viewers. Thanks for video!

@@miguelanderson5185 Pain really depends on the doctor. My first surgery was a Caldwell-Luc as well as standard polyp removal. The Caldwell-Luc was very uncomfortable as was living with the sinus packing for a week, both the kind that dissolves and you swallow it and some kind of sponge packing in the sinuses. There were five surgeries with that one ENT who used packing. The last one, the thread used to keep them together cut into my septum from the outside--it hurt badly. Then I moved. The new ENT used computer guidance with a headgear and didn't use standard packing. He used fingers from a surgical glove, slit and packed with gauze. The packing was removed the day after. Then weekly appointments for about a month for debridement along with rinsing. Debridement was uncomfortable. But after that, zero pain. That went for seven surgeries. My final surgery was from the ENT's son. It was painless in all areas. He used a different kind of packing and it was removed the day after surgery. One debridement and rinsing. So, ask all the questions you can--especially about packing and type of packing used. Also ask about debridement and rinsing. Do not skip rinsing after surgery, if you're directed. Follow directions exactly. With rinsing using budesonide, one round of Sinuva implants (they fall out after about six weeks with rinsing, so don't worry if you get them) and Xhance, I've been polyp free for five years in June of this year. So, no in my case I have the A-triad so recurring polyps have happened after 12 of my 13 surgeries. I don't think they'll come back as long as I stick to the treatment plan. Good luck with your surgery. If you have more questions, I'll be happy to answer them as a patient.

So I have had a CT Scan and my entire right side is blocked. So does that mean I won't have rinse going in either side and coming out opposite side? It just goes in up on the left side and fills up as much as possible and drains on that same side. Then I do the right side and hardly any goes up in there and very little comes out because that side is completely blocked and requires surgery? ENT says it's all blocked. Just looking at expectations. I am about to go on a 14 hour flight and a 12 day cruise. My ENT missed the blockage for almost a year. After a year of antibiotic biotics. Is there any chance this will unblock the blocked sinus? I purchased the Nirvage which sucks the rinse out. Is that no going to work with a blocked sinus? Or will it pull out the clogged sinus? Your thoughts please. Anyone's.

I was recently advised to use this for my pollen allergies that persist from the end of winter until the start of autumn. The doctor told me to use it 2 times a day morning and evening for 3 months while additionally mixing a capsule of 0.50 mg/ml Teva-Budesonide inside the saline solution. In the beginning I used it quite frequently but recently I feel like it's making my throat feel dry all the time. Is there a way to avoid the solution from reaching the back of my throat and only passing through out of the other nose hole? I tried tilting my head closer to the sink but I still end up accidentally swallowing some amounts of the solution...

I have some weird allergies I guess..I live around a bunch of trees and the home central heat and air brings the outside air in through the filters but seems like I am getting an odd taste and smells like outside trees inside..this has been gradually happening to me over the last 5 years..I went to an Allergist and had all these tests ran onme and not much showed up..this year it's been ramping up and tired of it so I bought this kit this morning and came home and tried it 15 minutes ago..I did like the instructions show and somefar so good..the soltion ran out the other nostril and then it did the same on the other side..I know one thing I am cleaned out and hoping this is what I need to keep this from happening.

Yes, my ent mentioned that this may help with eustachian dysfunction or may worsen it because when blowing, the mucus can actually clog the tube so you just need to be really careful

I formed the seal, squeezed gently and no water came out of the other nostril. Seemed to hit a block. I squeezed a bit harder and nothing came out. I tried the other nostril and I felt like I was drowning. My nose feels completely clear so I don't understand why the solution didn't travel all the way to the other side. Any ideas?

I used this, and maybe I did it to hard? I had to push it back out, it was all mucus for the most part and after the fact, one side hurt more then the other. it felt better but still kinda congested 😢 I think I did it wrong and I’m definitely going to try again.

I was interested in seeing the demonstration of the pamphlet instruction of tilting the head to one side and gently blowing the nose … before proceeding to the second nostril. I feel like this video demonstration is inaccurate (keep mouth open to breath while rinsing, not closed) and incomplete. The demonstration does NOT include how to blow the nose before rinsing the second side. I will be searching out another video.

I have used this kit over a number of years. I pull up through my nose and bring it out through the mouth. And I always use warm boiled water with my packet of solution as cold water is more uncomfortable to use.

Dr. O'Donovan, my issue is that I have to clear my throat an annoying amount of times. Especially when laying down in bed. My sinuses aren't clogged, but I was wondering if doing this or the Navage, might help with phlegm (I guess?) building up? Thanks!

Gargle with a glass of warm water thats been bolied and a tea spoon of salt, several times a day and especially when you wake up.Its the phlegm settling in the throat. Do not use a sinse rinse 1.5 hrs before lying down as it continues to drain into your throat

Hello there, im wondering Can i use my sinks tap water and soap to clean the neilmed sinus rinse bottle and tube and tip. Because in the booklet it says to use either distilled, reverse osmosis, bottled, some micro filtered thing, or recently boiled and cooled down water to clean. But i feel like id be going thru tons of distilled water to just clean the thing and get all the soap out. Would cleaning the neilmed sinus rinse with just plain tap water and soap cause any issues with like amoeba getting in your brain? But then still use the distilled water and packet for the actual sinus rinsing?

I wouldn't use tap water( bacteria). I would boil water ,cool, use that water to clean...then use distilled water for the rinse, & use half packet, to be sure it's not too strong.

I've only have used tap water with antibacterial soap to clean, a good rinse and then let it air dry upside down on a clean paper towel for the last 2-3 years using warm water with no problems. I hesitate on microwaving the bottle because of my personal concerns about the impact of microwaving plastic chemicals.
