Thanks for recommending this video Katie! I really love this look, it is genuinely like you described it. Looks like it was sitting out in a shed in the country ❤️💯

AAAAck, I did not know milk paint would do this!!! love it :) tfs, Laura
Beautiful!!!! Great job 👍 I saw a video once where this couple found a beautiful piece of furniture that was perfectly distressed and chippy and no doubt antique, it was perfect ., Ant to my horror they took it and made it look brand new and glossy 🙄 I was screaming No!!!!! Well you can imagine it was not pretty anymore 😫
How Katie it looks beautiful I love it I'm gonna try it on my wardrobe godbless hunni ☺️👌👍
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️love beyond words❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Amazing piece and amazing artis. Love the color but for me half the chipping would do. Your piece is beautiful!!!!
It came out so perfect!
I enjoy watching your videos but am nit a huge fan of the simple classic designs. I loved this one! Pls do more like this!!!
Love it! I've also seen where people left the center door and bottom trim a stripped light finish and painted the rest. I wonder how that would look in the chippy style.
I love this piece! I have a large armoire that I would love to try this on with a white paint. It’s a light pine color though and I would want a little darker color wood peaking through the chips. How would I be able to achieve that look? Would I be able to stain the piece first to get a darker wood, seal it, and then do the milk paint? Or would I not be able to seal it until after the milk paint? And if I have to seal it in between the stain and the milk paint, what kind of sealant would you recommend?
This video is just what I needed. I want to obtain the same look for my dining table. Should seal it with the same top coat or something different?
Loved the tutorial! Beautiful piece

Thanks Holly! Glad you had a chance to watch 😊
Not my taste but great tutorial should I ever want to try this.
Did you apply the 2nd and 3rd coats right over the chipping?
@salvagedbykscott
3 жыл бұрын
Yes! If it’s already chipping in an area it will continue to chip there.
Does it flake or chip more where you pre-sanded less in those areas, Katie? I'm wanting super, extra-chipping for something I'm working on.
Katie if it starts to flake, crackle and chip on the first coat do you just paint right over that with you next coat or do you run the flakes off first?

I like to just keep painting until I’ve got the coverage I want and then I see where it all ends up 😉
I absolutely love this! I want to try on an existing cabinet I have but it's cherry. Will I get bleedthrough with the milk paint? Thanks so much!
@salvagedbykscott
3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Unfortunately any waterbed paint will activate bleed through on cherry. You can apply a few coats of clear spray shellac to seal in the tannins before you paint but it can cause extreme chipping like this.
That’s super cool 😎, is the piece surface natural wood or veneer ?! Thanks 🙏
Great tutorial! What if I wanted to get another color layer in there? Would I use 2 different colors of milk paint? So the chips would show another color layer.
@salvagedbykscott
4 жыл бұрын
For sure! I’d do a base colour, seal it and then add another colour on top. You just have to remember that milk paint does whatever it wants to so don’t plan on a specific look 😉
I loved it. Thank you for your detailed info about milk paint. One question please, did you lose all the lovely crackles you showed (almost in the middle of the video) after sanding, if yes, what is your advice to keep some spots with these crackles? Thank you in advance for your time.

You cannot control milk paint. You get what you get and you need to be ok with that 😉

Hey Maha Zappa! So I recently painted an old chest white white milk paint. I wanted to keep some of the crackles too. So what I did was sealed them in. I bought a spray shellac and gave them a good 3-5 coats. This made them harden and “seal” so I could keep that beautiful crackle effect. Hope that helps!
The hemp oil you referred to in the video….is it the same kind you ingest?
What’s the best paint to use under milk paint in your opinion?
Quick question and sorry if you already answered this. How long did you let each coat dry before applying another coat? Great tutorial!!!
@salvagedbykscott
3 жыл бұрын
Dry times really depend on the weather. Usually not more than 1 hour between coats but I just keep an eye and once it’s dry to the touch it’s ok to move on to the next coat 😉 thanks so much for watching!
I've just started my "quarantine" milk paint project - first time. It is scary because the coats are so blotchy. If its chipping after first coat, do you just paint over the crackle and chipping with the second coat and third coat? Won't the chips come off on my brush? Thank you
@salvagedbykscott
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, just keep adding paint until you get the coverage you want. Paint will chip off into your brush, but that’s just a part of the chippy look.

@@salvagedbykscott Thank you so much, I appreciate your help.
Question: If you do not let the milk paint sit for 10 minutes... What would happen. You you get a unbalanced effect, darker here and there? Mmmm, it would be worth a try. Have you done that? Love the color, but to much “Chippy” for me. But Gorgeous!!!! Love the blush color.
@salvagedbykscott

You need to wait the 10 minutes to let the powdered pigment dissolve. Otherwise you’d just be brushing sandy water.
What kind of paint brush do you recommend when painting with milk paint? Thank you!
@salvagedbykscott

I really love Zibra paint brushes for milk paint. They seem to hold the thinner paint really well and give you lots of control. Specifically the Zibra Palm Pro 😉

Katie Scott SALVAGED by k. scott Thank you!!!❤️ Love your work!
Question-Does sanding increase or decrease the chances of chipping effect? Tia, Laura
@salvagedbykscott
3 жыл бұрын
Hey! The more porous the surface is the more likely that the milk paint will absorb into in instead of sitting on top and chipping. But if your original finish is too shiny and you don't sand at all, sometimes ALL of the paint will chip off.

Question? Where do you live? I see you paint in you garage. I do that too. But in winter time a have to stop. What you do on the winter time?
@salvagedbykscott

I live in south central ontario. We have a heater in our garage so I can paint through the winter months.
Chippy is not my style, but I love the effort and hard work you put into all of your projects.
what brand furniture wax did you use?
@salvagedbykscott
3 жыл бұрын
On this piece I used FAT wax.
Why would my milk paint not be cracking? It just looks like normal flat paint? Not sure what I did wrong.
@salvagedbykscott

Milk paint does whatever it wants. You can’t ever predict what will happen. Sometimes you can coax it along with heat, like a hair dryer or putting it out in the sun to dry.
I’m glad you explained how milk paint reacts. That’s not for me.
What Artistry? Milk paint you've got another disciple.
great job on the piece, just not a fan of the chippy paint 👏🏻
Well done but not for me. I like clean, tidy appearances and this just rubs me the wrong way. I guess I’m not a shabby chic person. But then if we were all the same it would be a boring world.
You are painting the front and we see the back, can’t even see what you are painting
