I thought this hand was pretty straight forward. Heres my logic on it.... Villain had a pair, based on his J high claim, likely JJ. He initially did the "I have a pair so Hero has AK" read. On flop he raises big because no one folds AK on that flop for min raise or even 2x. On brick turn he decides to put Hero to test agaun, and basically hopes if he's behind and Hero calls its check check on river. When Hero shoves, villain accepts his JJ is most likely no good and makes a disciplined fold. He tells Hero he had J high because he's a poker player and always misrepresents his losing hand, esp to not let Hero know that he's willing to fold JJ...

I like the jam on the turn. TT/JJ will probably call off as well as FDs, maybe AK if villain is really sticky. Any A,K, or club on the river is not good for us yet we would still have to call down. Sure we can be getting trapped by aces/ kings sometimes (aces more often) but most live players will want to get as much money in pre as they can so they don’t have to navigate situations like this

Great Call and analysis. In theory land I think the solver is way more polar. Solvers are gonna be checking back open ended straight draws and non nut flush draws because they hate bet folding that much equity and/or calling it off with a potentially dominated draw. Alot of villians bluffs will come from shitty gutshots like 55 and 44 and 0 equity hands that dont interact with OOP folding rrange and dont care to bet fold. (Not positive, I've just seen this concept alot) Great work Bart!

Had a similar spot last week. 2-4 1k eff. UTG (assumed reg) raises to 20, MP calls. Hero BTN raises to 80 with JJ, both call. Flop comes 2-3-4 rainbow. Check check and hero bets 110. Now the UTG raises to 580, MP folds. This didnt make sense at all to me, maybe some A5 56s type of hand that is fast playing, but the sizing is way too big. I either have to jam or fold in this spot and after tanking, I exploitatively folded. Afterwards I think i shouldve jammed, because maybe 10s or 9s even takes this line as a weird protection bet for overcards. Any opinions as if this is just always a jam?

  • @modestomouso1234

Hmmm, yeah that’s a very weird x/r from UTG. If he had A5s, why would he play it this way, allowing you to fold all your over-pairs and AK/AQ? Would he play 33/44 this way? Or AA/KK he chose to slow play pre and didn’t 4bet? Another hand I could maybe see doing this would be 55, but again, why raise so large? Really weird spot. Did you find out what he had? Your action in 2-7 isn't *just* because of betting. You also get to see how many cards the other person draws. If you were going to play two round (preflop, whole board) HE you would only have the betting to base a decision on. That is 1/2 the game of NL 2-7. Arguable TD 2-7 with draws and betting has more info than HE. It just feels odd to players who are use to community cards.

If the villain is a really good player, and is aware that this guy usually plays smaller stakes, isn’t a regular in this game, he may have seen the small flop bet as someone playing with scared money, and felt like he could bully him in position to buy the pot. He probably deduced that the small bet was maybe a blocker bet, or an ace high bet, and decided to try to outplay him.

"Jack high". lol - He's either a terrible liar or a brilliant liar. Either way, he's a liar. I'll sometimes tell people I folded a hand that would make absolutely no sense for me to play the way I played it just to confuse them. That might be what happened here. More than likely, he had a hand like J9 that included a J so he can credibly say he had a J. He might have also had JJ. But that just seems so bizarre. Is he bluffing with JJ? Did he just get scared at the turn check raise shove and figure his JJ was no good? That would be like a 4th street chicken if we're using the terminology. The question then is why not check it back on the turn with JJ and try to get to showdown. But then he's raising a super dry flop, checking back a brick turn, and then what on the river? He's afraid of facing a river bet and not knowing what to do or where he's at. So, he sets the price on the turn and gives himself the chance to fold before facing a bad river spot. I don't know if that's what happened but it makes sense.
