    ❤ Thank you. Perhaps you can help me better understand this. I’m 70yr old and new with gimp. I’m having trouble conceptualizing these”masks” and the white/black nature. I understand the difference between black/white masks, but I have NO idea when to use a mask, and which type to use. If you cannot answer can you recommend a book or video that can assist me? I believe it’s the terminology that throws me off; I’m trying to incorporate my understanding of a mask with photo editing meanings. Why is black transparent? Why is white opaque? Black is opaque as well? See what I mean?

    Maybe I have a different version. When I use the brush I get white or black painted over the image depending which color I pick. When I use the eraser I get the result shown in the video. OR I missed something important. I followed along as much as I could, then began experimenting. Still the video was helpful. Thank you.

    What if I want to use a layer like a stencil? I haven´t found anything about selectively blocking parts of an image from editing. My idea is to use a black and white image such that the black spots block the editing of the layer below. Then the mask would be replaced by another and so on... in order to create complex multi-colour patterns. Thus setting something transparent won´t cut it. PS: sorry if it´s a total n00b question.

    great tutorial. Keep them coming. Very easy to follow. I have just one question. . . Why do we not just select the erase tool on the layer above the lower layer and erase the part of the image that we want from the lower image to show through?

  • @GuruGal

    @GuruGal

    4 жыл бұрын

    We are trying to prevent destroyed pixels with this method. Meaning we don't want to permanently erase parts of an image.

    @@GuruGal I guess this is where I get confused. So picture this... I open an image of a car. Then I add a layer mask. Are you saying that I erase my original image when I use the erase tool say on the wheels. Ince I use the eraser it destroys the pixels in that image and permanently removes them in the original image. I guess that would make sense except for the fact that I hadn't exported over my original car image with the wheels still on the car. Sorry I'm imagining permanent as permanent..or I could not open the image in it's original form unless I saved it again. Does that make any sense? Cuz I've hit the undo button after the eraser tool and the image is restored as far back as I'd like to take it. Even to its original.So I'm not following you entirely. And I over complicate things sometimes. Lol thanks for your help.

    I know what I'd like to know... how does someone apply a sequentially ordered number (like a increasing value watermark) to a series of related photos? I'd love to know a way to put a #1 on the first image of a sequence, a #10 on the tenth, a #25 on the twenty-fifth, etc. It seems logical that it would be in the Batch Image Processor plugin, but I don't see (or it is escaping me) that ability in there anywhere. Thanks.

  • @GuruGal

    @GuruGal

    Layer masks are useful for full control of transparency in your project. A layer mask prevents you from destroying pixels on a layer, and allows you to "erase" and bring back pixels without worrying about losing parts of an object.
