To make an image black and white with GIMP, open the Saturation menu by navigating to Colors > Saturation. In the Saturation menu, bring the saturation slider all the way down by clicking and dragging it to the left.

White reveals, black conceals! Switching to selection tool for larger area is a good idea. What step would come next to save the masked over area to later edit it? How to save this project: - with its layers masks separate? Will the file be really big? How does merging layers come into the process? What's flattening? Do you work on the image as a jpg and switch to different format ( to use whileworking on it) ... and then save in that format? ... and then do you also Save As as jpg if you image will only be printed 8"× 10"? I'm rusty at this. Thanks you!

Ohhh boy, I'm a noob. You said "white reveals, black conceals", then you go ahead and paint the mask with black to reveal the background. Am I missing something?

Basically, white reveals the original image while black conceals it which allows the second layer to shine through instead. So painting white reveals the first layer while black conceals it. I hope this helps!
