Correcting my messed up sleep schedule was one of the first things I noticed when I embarked on my first 36 hour fast this week. The shorter fasts didn’t do anything for me but oh man the 36 hour one has impacted my brain in ways I don’t even understand. For so long, I thought my circadian rhythm was broken. I’d get to sleep between 3 and 5 A.M. and sleep until noon, sometimes later. Since my 36 hour fast it’s like a switch flipped in my brain. Over the past days, I’ve naturally been waking up between 6 and 7 A.M.-fully alert-and getting tired between 9 P.M. and midnight. I am completely FLOORED that a single fast has alleviated my sleep troubles. I didn’t think I’d ever sleep normally again. The impacts of fasting on the body are nothing short of amazing.

@@rjthomasindyusa Hi, thanks for your reply! I have. I once fasted 5 days but it didn't improve my circadian rhythm (i broke my fast at around 6 pm). Then a while ago, after my rhythm started get a little more normal, I did a fast again and broke it at around 6pm and it completely messed it up again. It makes doesnt make me start to feel awake until 6 pm. So I have a theory that after fasting for a few days, the moment you break your fast is the moment which your body will see as the "correct wake up time" and will calibrate your circadian rhythm according to that time. So I was just curious, did your circadian rhythm improve During the fast, or After you had broken the fast? and did you break your fast in the morning? Or at a different time? Thanks!

I got on testosterone and I started using a CPAP a few days ago. I defiantly getting good sleep now but I need to figure out this circadian rhythm. Its 2:18 AM right now... lol. I was eating late too. So I stopped eating earlier and I think I am going to set an alarm and wake up at a normal hour and go outside for 20 minutes. My bedroom doesn't let a whole lot of light in... I found out 2 years ago that I could eat almost the same amount of calories/food and either I could lose or gain weight depending on what time I eat. I used to snack around 11:30 PM when I got home from work and I did this for almost 10 years. With this routine, I slowly gained about 30 lbs in 10 years. Two years ago I decided to stop snacking at night time (but still consuming the same amount of calories/food). I just moved my snack time around 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The same food that I snack at night time I moved it in the afternoon. Glad to know that science backs it up!!!

It might also just be metabolic, I was over exercising, under eating and not getting enough carbs which resulted in several nutritional deficiencies after 6 years etc (thought I was being healthy, felt great in the initial years) unknowingly I was putting my body in a catabolic state which will cause the body to stay awake and alert, as it is meant to. Think about what you are doing and what messages you are sending to your central nervous system via the way you eat exercise and live...you might be putting your body in survival mode and its simply doing what its meant to be doing. I cut back and changed the way I exercise opting for more anabolic promoting activities with ample recovery time, ate more frequent balanced meals and also allowed myself to take naps. It has taken a long time for my body to balance out and recover, I now don't even need to bother with or think about sleep hygiene, I get tired and sleep. I hope this helps someone in a similar predicament, the worst part is not knowing what is happening and how to recover.

Hi, Thomas! Here's a suggestion: please do a video on the deleterious effects of having too low estrogen/estradiol for men. It can't be too high, but if it's too low this is the end result (note: excerpt from an article): ****** Testosterone is powerful--in the male human body and in the American pharmacological marketplace. From 1993 to 2000, prescriptions for testosterone replacements increased fivefold, boosted by advertising campaigns that invited aging men to “talk to their doctor about low T” if they were experiencing decreased energy, sex drive or muscle tone. Until now, however, physicians haven’t really known just how low testosterone levels might produce these symptoms, and just how low testosterone would need to drop to cause changes in a man’s energy level, his body composition or his sexual function. In fact, while men were lining up in droves to get tested for “low T,” physicians and researchers really weren’t sure whether the problem was testosterone at all. In a curious twist, it turns out that some of men’s “low T” symptoms are, in fact, attributable to a deficiency of “the female hormone,” estrogen. That’s right. Low E, not low T, may be responsible for the decline in many men’s sexual function and their accumulation of body fat. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday. The new research explored what mix of hormone levels in healthy younger men might bring on the hallmark symptoms of male hypogonadism: loss of energy and strength, sexual dysfunction and depressed libido and changes in body composition that add flab and sap muscle tone. Because a portion of a male’s testosterone is converted to the hormone estradiol--a form of estrogen--researchers knew there was more to the hormonal mix than just testosterone. So they recruited more than 300 healthy men between 20 and 50 and tinkered with their hormonal balance to see what the effects would be. All the men had their testosterone hormone production suppressed by four monthly injections of the drug goserelin (marketed as Zoladex) and either a placebo testosterone replacement or actual testosterone replacement that ranged across four levels, from very little replacement to complete replacement. These men were further divided into two groups: half getting a medication that blocks the conversion of testosterone to estradiol, the other half not. The results help tease apart which of men’s mid- or late-life symptoms may stem from testosterone loss and which from a failure to convert enough of that testosterone to estradiol. The results also flesh out the levels of testosterone loss that are typically necessary to induce symptoms such as low sex drive, body composition changes and flagging energy. The accumulation of body fat was seen in most of the men whose testosterone was less than fully replaced, but such increases were particularly widespread in those whose estrogen levels were low. Sexual function suffered among the men whose testosterone was was less than fully replaced as well. But again, the effect was much more pronounced in men whose estrogen levels were also low. Reduced testosterone levels alone were enough to degrade a man’s lean body mass, the size of his thigh muscle or his leg strength. Those weren’t further degraded when a man’s ability to convert testosterone to estrogen was blocked, suggesting that these problems are largely caused by low testosterone alone. The result may be the first step to a more precise diagnosis of those “non-specific symptoms” that men complain to their doctors about, and which lead to them with ever greater frequency taking home a prescription for hormone replacement. It may also be a reminder to men that testosterone alone is not the source of their vitality: estrogen too, plays a role. **********

I try to sleep everyday for a long time but when life gets in the way it’s hard btw I work night shift and I lost 63 lbs and I don’t sleep at night at all. I sleep at 9am to 5pm :) than I’m awake to 5pm till 9am. I work nightshift as a nurse. But I don’t eat at night! That’s the true secret! I eat my meal at 5pm and 9pm and fast all night all day till next day at 5pm

Okay - quick disclosure. I'm about to watch the video but I can relate to the title so much. This is what I've noticed too when I fast for over 24 hours. After a full day of fasting, I'd have to deliberately fight drowsiness to stay up late, and would wake up the next morning instead of sleeping in regardless of whether or not I stayed up late.

Ive had a bad sleep schedule for the past 14 years, but dont really care to change it. My body is weird and gets sleepy when the sun comes up. I have a hard time sleeping when its night. So I usually get up at like 12 or 1 eat my 1 meal at 7 or 8 ish and go to bed at 6am. Just a night owl. Heck when I worked in a bakery I went to bed after work so I used to sleep at noon. Those science things though are on point with what the mayo clinic taught me. They did say though as long as you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day your body will produce the melatonin at that time dark or not

Yoi can look directly at the sun at any time of day, its safe and I do it all the time, it only improved my eyesight. Also make your own blue blockers that are super cheap and better than any you'll find, because safety goggles fit tightly on your face and don't allow light to enter from the sides, just stretch adhesive tinted foil (red or orange or yellow or a couple of them) find some on eBay that are made for windows.

I have some medical problems that cause a lot of insomnia and I take melatonin every day for months while I'm having trouble, once the symptons are gone I stop taking melatonin. First day without melatonin I sleep like a baby, taking melatonin longterm has no adverse affect on me.

my circadian rhythm has been messed up since the chemo (2013!) it causes insomnia so they gave us all Ambien- that night we all fell out of bed! the next night thy gave us Temazepam (generic for Restoril) and after 10 pills I was addicted-ended up in the ER with E. Coli-they said stop Temazepam immediately-you're not waking up tp pee and the longer the urine stays on the bladder the bacteria over grows (?) so I had to quit-NOT that they were helping me sleep (drugged sleep is not quality sleep) Then onto Melatonin-didn't always work, 5HTP-slept 2 hours, crazy dream with both, couldn't turn my thoughts off -so onto Theanine which works sometimes-did everything I knew to do-then found out what I didn't know to do-so will try this (except I'm never hungry in the morning :(

Thomas, before you demonized MELATONIN I highly suggest you read the research by Russel J Reiter Ph.D who is the pre-eminent MELATONIN researcher of our times. Exogenous Melatonin does not create a feedback loop. Furthermore, MELATONIN production decreases with age so exogenous supplementation is highly recommended for older people.

According to research, it gradually starts to decline in your 30's and by your 70's you are producing less than 50%. MELATONIN is mostly known for its influence on sleep/circadian rhythm and less known for its superior antioxidant properties, much greater than vitamin C plus you can't overdose on it. Search youtube for Russel J Reiter and MELATONIN o better yet, buy his book.

Just quit caffeine. It's rough at first and you might think you can't live without coffee but you'll be shocked how much you need coffee because you DRINK coffee in the first place. I quit caffeine when I started keto and I sleep better, fall asleep almost instantly and I wake up way easier because I get better quality sleep. My migraines are also significantly less common and less severe.
