Thanks for this video topic! It helped clarify some questions I had. I usually use decodables with my lowest ability group for intervention so that they are very short texts and have them go back at the end and highlight skill words. I usually use the copyable books so they can highlight and code words and then keep them.

I like to have my students go back and highlight the skill we are working on after we read the book. I really like your white board idea when it is a book that cannot be written on. Another thing I do with those books is to use mini erasers (that you can get in the Target dollar section) and I have my kiddos put the eraser right above or right under the word that shows the targeted skill. It works well for my students who are tactile and they get very excited (and I think more engaged), especially when I use holiday/seasonal erasers.

Thank you for explaining how to use decodable readers. I get mines from TPT that have the questions at the end of the passages. We also review the word patterns before we read. I look forward to your videos each Sunday. Blessings

If I’m following my scope and sequence for grade 1, very early in the year we get into digraphs. So based on assessments 75% of my class has the alphabetic principle down solidly, then they are all ready for digraphs. At that point I would really need my decodable book lesson to be essentially whole group. Otherwise I’m pulling three small groups and teaching them the same skill, and my fourth group is my lower one where we are still working on alphabetic principle. How would you make small groups with this class? By April, they may be more spread out in their skill mastery, so then it’s easier to make small groups.
