I'm on my school's phonics team and we have worked this past year on writing explicit phonics lessons. As I worked on these throughout last year, we got into a routine on each lesson. Each new skill took us about three days to move through our introduction. We reviewed each day with sound cards and concept decks. Through the 3 days, we introduce a new sound, practice decoding single words and nonsense words, practice reading in decodable sentences, write words with new sounds, write sentences, and finish with the introduction of heart words (nonphonetic and other words with spelling patterns and rules we haven't introduced yet). I went through OG training and one of our reading teachers is an OG tutor so our lessons were built to be similar to an OG lesson. Right now, we are going through LETRS training. The hope is that we might gain more insight into how we might tweak our lessons from what we are learning. Your reminders are great!

Thank you Ms. Jones. So grateful for your tips. How should phonics be taught to kids whose second language is English and first language is a native dialect? Will appreciate your response.

I have a 8 year old that struggles with reading(she knows letter sounds) and doesn't know how to spell at all. Any ideas on where to start help her to thrive? Any ideas and suggestions are very needed and helpful.

Phonics can quickly become boring for students so using a variety of creative and contextual activities is a good idea.

Why does your voice nflection go up at the end of the sentence? It's really annoying. Why not just teach synthetic phonics? Use "Reading with Phonics" by Julie Hay and Charles Wingo. Sometimes the older teaching materials work the best!
