How To Use BMW Steptronic Transmission And Drive Modes - BMW 520d

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We look at how to use BMW Steptronic transmission and drive modes in this practical video. The BMW Steptronic transmission or semi automatic transmission is very easy to use. The drive modes allow us to select a Sport, Comfort or Eco Pro mode. The steptronic semi automatic is available in each of the drive modes.
We look at how to use the BMW Steptronic or semi-automatic and also why we might choose to use it. We use a BMW 520d for this demonstration of transmission and drive modes. The BMW 5 series is a big luxury car but has a lot of the sport and performance feel of the smaller BMW cars in the range. The driving modes give us the option to use the car for different conditions.

    Hello, I know your videos are-year-old but I’m looking at one to buy. I never had a clue how these things work till the weather BMWs, but I haven’t had one like this. Thank you very much indeed for explaining in such a comprehensive way how they stand ColorWorks, I’m told never to buy one because there’s nothing but trouble, but I just like him and thank you again Eddie.😮

    When you move the transmission to the left into S/M it is still automatic, but with gear switches that happen in a higher (sportier) rev range. On your dash you will see it changing from D to S1, S2, etc depending on what gear the transmission is in. Then when you start using the paddles, it will switch to manual, with gears denoted by M1, M2, etc.

  • @ChimpOnCars

    Yes it is exactly as you describe it. The sportier engine revs are first noticed as the car changes down a gear often but remains an automatic until you use the paddles.

    I use amzn.to/3X5AV7E and a normal screen mounting phone holder. I have put go pro mounts onto these also. Nothing special needed to get started. If you are in the North Kent area of the UK then stop by for a chat sometime.

    Should I release the accelerator pedal when I shift gears or not.. Will it cause any damage if I do not release the accelerator..

  • @ChimpOnCars

    @ChimpOnCars

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question, the cars throttle position is adjusted by the cars computer so there is no need for you to release the accelerator. The gear shifts up or down are reasonably smooth without you needing to adjust the pedal position.

    In flappy paddle mode will the car automatically gear down on its own accord when slowing down?? Or does the driver need to down shift

  • @ChimpOnCars

    @ChimpOnCars

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question, the car will change gear to avoid stalling when slowing down and it will avoid over revving when speeding up. The computer will always have the final decision on a gear change.

  • @Sullzyy

    Might be an obvious answer, but how well to the paddles work when you need to downshift while turning ? Would you just switch back to automatic if the situation requires?

  • @ChimpOnCars

    @ChimpOnCars

    Жыл бұрын

    You can easily switch back to auto but the paddles work whilst turning too. They are long so easy to find and move with the steering wheel.

    Is there an easy way to go from sports manual back to sports automatic other than flicking the selector over to the right and back over to the left?

    You can just use the paddles when in auto which puts you in manual for a short time. To go into the full sports manual you do have to move the selector stick.

    Great video, thank you. I'm buying a G20 3 series soon. I live in the country and drive on roads like this very often - I will probably be driving in manual mode all of the time. Do you need to put it in park when stationary in steady moving traffic?

  • @ChimpOnCars

    @ChimpOnCars

    Жыл бұрын

    Awesome car, you will enjoy using the manual mode on those roads. I have grown lazy and just let the car do it most of the time now but maybe that’s typical for a 5 series old man owner. I don’t use Park in slow traffic. I use the electronic handbrake and leave it in D. You could also use Auto Hold as shown in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIx8yK59Xb2xqs4.html which my wife prefers. Either way makes use of the Stop/Start but I switch that off if I’m only stopping for a couple of seconds.

    Good point, I did until I became an instructor. It’s part of the training to use different words for things and situations and that was one of them. Try saying accelerator in a first driving lesson when you are guiding a bit more, a bit less, foot off, etc.
