This video shows some of the great features inside of Fabfilter ProQ3, and a side-chain trick using a button I wish I knew sooner. This is a cool trick, that is easy to do, and a great solution to using dynamic EQ and compression to deal with frequency masking. Here we use side-chaining kick and bass as an example.

    I also use this to fit vocals into a mix. Routing all instrumental tracks to an instrumental bus, the using the match EQ option to find overlapping frequencies with the vocals. Then I just drag the overlapping ones to zero and apply a really subtle dynamic EQ for all of them (usually no more than -1 DB). Not only will it clear the mix, it also helps to show when vocals are too quiet because then this setting will be more obvious. Trackspacer is another good plug-in dedicated to this, even lets you adjust the attack and release.

    @@audioedges Depends on workflow, suppose… I set the default template on Soothe2 specifically for that purpose, so it’s good to go right away - versus extra steps with ProQ of another instance on other track, setting for the visual overlap with it, manually figuring out the frequencies, and few steps to set dynamic EQ - so is significantly quicker, though perhaps wouldn’t be that big a difference if working from Soothe2 starting from scratch. Still use the dynamic on ProQ alot though as is great. Both totally replaced Trackspacer for me though, lol. 🍻

    Where is attack and release settings for that compression?

  • @audioedges

    @audioedges

    2 ай бұрын

    Interestingly, Pro Q-3 doesn't have manually adjustable settings for the dynamic EQ. It's been carefully tuned and is program dependent, meaning the attack, release and knee depend on the audio, frequency range of the band and the dynamic range. So the EQ customizes itself, aiming to give a really natural and smooth compression based on the manual. Pretty useful for several applications, but if you want to get into the details of the attack and release yourself, I'd recommend going with a dedicated multiband compressor instead :)
