Try Jive Radio. It is NPR stories from Latin America with everyday people speaking in their normal voices with an transcript and an English translation that can be activated next to it. It is for students of Spanish. You hear and read it as many times as you would like and then listen without the transcript. It really develops your ear.

I found with both french and spanish that watching shows with subtitles ( in french and spanish) was crucial for learning how to distinguish the words. With both, initially * couldn't hear what they were saying at all, despite knowing the language fairly well. Subtitles allow you to split up the words from what initially seems like a continuous stream of undifferentiated syllables, and gradually you learn to interpret the spoken language at speed. Even though I know french quite well now, I still tend to put up subtitles - mostly I don't read them, but every now and then a phrase or perhaps even just a word is not clear, and I can quickly look at the subtitles for clarification. That way, I don't miss out on learning opportunities.

Could you do a video on how you learned English. What steps you followed and how long it took. Did you live in an English-speaking country?

You know what? That sounds like an interesting idea. ¡Gracias! I did live in the US for a little bit but I mostly went there on vacation all through out my childhood. That and the level of exposure we all get to American English really did it for me. ¡Un abrazo! - Maura =)=)=)

Gracias, Maura 😊.

🤷¡Gracias a tiii! Un abrazo de vuelta - Maura =)=)=)

It is the same for me Tom. I think it's because the Spanish in the movies and series is super advanced where you'll hear phrasal verbs or idioms. The Spanish is very fast and it seems like the words are more amalgamated together. I remember listening to Spanish podcasts at level B1 and they at the time sounded very fast and again with the words amalgamated together. I can listen at B1/B2 and advanced podcasts and understand more or less all of them now. The difficulty could be partly because when we are watching a series or movie, we are trying to listen and understand but we are also watching what is happening in the movie at the same time. With a podcast, visual or not there isn't much happening in the podcasts so maybe our listening comprehension gets better. I think we just need to keep watching / listening as much as we can to advance our listening comprehension.

If you are using Netflix, Prime Video or something like that, check to see if audio description is available in your target language because that also introduces a lot of vocabulary. Por ejemplo, "un coche azul para delante de la casa. Un hombre rubio que lleva gafas de sol sale del coche."

got a question about verbs in spanish. I've found a lot of free online resources to learn about verbs and I've been focusing on present tense verbs. But I feel ready to start learing past and future tense verbs. Anyone know of any free online resources to explore the other two tenses? :)

@georgebender7519 I can understand your frustration, but the fact that you don't understand a word shows that this content is above your current level. This level is just right for me because I understand just enough to follow what she's saying, but I still have to try really hard, and I don't get every word. That's kind of the idea. Find videos that are simpler and start there rather than here. Have patience with yourself and realize you won't understand everything. Not every video is for every level of learner.

@@aprilaronson1012 I appreciate your kindness to my frustration. I hear reading books is just the same way as learning, as kids do learning English. So this, yes, is above my level. I’ve been trying for two years and not to successful at it. If this company has easier lessons I hope to find them. I apologize for my whining. 🙏
