How to unclog a slow drain

    Also, consider checking the p trap under the sink for clogs before doing this. From my experience, a slow draining bathroom vanity is often just a clump of hair in the p trap. It can usually be removed without tools and is easily accessible. If that's clear, your clog is further back. This trick is pretty useful, as is very hot water. Keep in mind though, you're often times not removing the clog, just moving your clog further down the line and COULD make your issues worse over time. Friendly PSA. If you do use chemical drain remover, it doesn't work and then you call a plumber: TELL THE PLUMBER YOU USED THE CHEMICALS. We won't judge you for trying to save money, and we'll quickly figure out if you're lying or not. We just wanna know so we can take the necessary precautions. Chemical burns are quite jarring when you're not ready for them. ...Sorry for the essay.

    I recommend hot water and using only vinegar or baking soda as mixing the chemicals might lead to calcification and clog the drain up even more. I've seen this happen to my pipes and drains.

    Acetic acid (vinegar) eats calcium, so it's a non-issue. However, it will become more neutral because of the baking soda. Idk why he is mixing the two together, a strong base or acid will do the job fine, old hair and skin is not hard to remove. Mixing the two just makes it work less.

    Vinegar is acid, baking soda is basic and when you mix them, they neutralize each other. Basically this does nothing. Vinegar by itself works way better because it is acidic. This guys problem is his pop-up. The pop-up needs to be raised up higher so the water can drain better.

  • @TheDeathLove

    This is absolutely false. During an acid-base reaction, salt is created along with a lot of carbon dioxide. That intense pressure essentially pushes the clog out into a more open area. It could further clog down the pipe also but usually doesn't happen.

  • @MeDmAnQcA

    It's usually better to just deal with the grossness of snaking the drain since clogs are usually buildups of hair, pushing it further with something like a sink plunger or slowly with a build up of CO2 has the risk of just moving the clog into the main drainage system of your house.

  • @Shonicheck
    @Shonicheck Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, that way you are doing little to nothing to the clog, since the whole "schtick" of the method is that it breaks down the hard mass of the clog by producing co2 in its structure(same thing as you do with your cake), which is hard to do if you set up the reaction all the way up. What you want to do is deliver baking soda to the clog - either by creating a thick water solution of it and slowly feeding it for a while(and then letting it sit without any or atleast little to none other running water for a while would help too). That way you can get the clog somewhat saturated with soda, and then by providing "acidity" to the water(either by adding vinegar, or with any other acid, like lemon acid) you set up the reaction all the way deep in the clog, which makes it way less stable and easier to remove for either running water or other solutions(like your plunger, snake or an air plunger)

    I try to do that once a month. And if you live in a house that has septic tanks, it’s a must because cockroaches or palmetto bugs mainly live in septic tanks and come up through the pipes. That’s why you find them in your bathroom. When the palmetto bugs eat the baking soda, they explode because they can’t burp so baking soda is excellent for getting rid of palmetto bugs, but do it in the pipe system because you definitely don’t want exploding palmetto bugs and cockroaches all over your house. Yikes. This was learned by owning rental property where are you have no control of how people keep their homes.

    Bubbling and fizzing doesn't mean it's cleaning... You don't need the baking soda. The chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda just does nothing for the clog. The unreacted vinegar is what is helping with what's in the drain. The chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar results in water, carbon dioxide, and sodium acetate, which is useless in cleaning drains or anything at that. For this case, just use the vinegar in the drain. If you are cleaning anything else, use either vinegar only, or baking soda only (when using baking soda only, add water to make a paste and scrub, or just let it sit) If the food-safe vinegar is not working, use cleaning vinegar, it's more concentrated (food-safe vinegar is 5% acetic acid, cleaning vinegar is 6% acetic acid--20% stronger--the remaining 94-95% is plain water) and will work to dissolve stuff that is in the drain. That said, the vinegar reacts with calcium and rust, which helps the sink area (like soaking the towel and letting it keep in contact with the mineral buildup). That's where the bubbling is a good thing, because the vinegar is actually reacting with the thing you want to remove. If you add baking soda, you're wasting time and money.
