I'm so grateful for videos like this I put in a maintenance request almost a month ago for my clogged bathroom sink but they never came . I'm so glad I was able to do this myself and the clog was a nice wad of hair mostly and it was where the plug is #1 I went ahead and took the p-trap off anyway because I needed to clean the drain out. Thank you for creating this video. If I can do this anyone can!

Hey man thanks for this video, I got my sink cleaned up in a jiffy. One tip for anyone looking to do this, if you have the style of drain plug that you need to undo from under before you can take it out, I'd recommend that you leave a bucket underneath your sink while doing it to keep any looseness from letting water fall down.

Great tips! I keep a Zip-It handy around the house for bathtub clogs where hair gathers, but I've also had a lot of success with a plunger for bathroom sinks. Typically the soap scum and slime gathers on the sides and at the bottom of the P trap. Using a plunger and a full sink of warm water will loosen and flush that junk down the drain in no time.

Always #2. But that means the stopper screen is doing it's job. Ever since I started using that style I have not had to remove a p trap. If I am installing new faucets, the p trap gets replaced, and a good push to close/open stopper (usually included with the faucet kits, for those who don't know). Thanks. My bathroom sink has a push-'plug' and a plunger wasn't effective in unblocking the very slow drain. I came upon this video by chance....and I fixed the problem in 5 minutes. I couldn't get the inner bit out (my Allen key was too small) but I could remove a lot of hair & gunk around & below it. Saved possibly A100 in plumber's fees .

why throw plastic away unecessarily like that?...we should be making as much use of it as possible instead of throwing everything out there to end up in the oceans etc...if it's not cracked, worn or leaking just take a few moments of your time to clean it out...I use disinfectant and a bottle brush...job done.

Thanks Scott. My last problem was worse. I did the three steps, no success. I then removed the gooseneck again, note auger did not work, so I used Turkey baster several days to drop vinegar and baking soda. Still no success. I then used Turkey baster to carefully put drain cleaner down wall pipe. Since I wanted to protect pipes, I swiftly put sink back together and flushed with water. It worked. Note, drain cleaner melted the top of my Turkey baster. Need to be careful with your hands to keep drain cleaner off.

Can you pour different types of soda soft drinks down the sink or will it damage the piping? The Common problem I have with my sink clogging the pipes is my tooth paste turns into a very hard cement which nothing seems to work at breaking up the harden tooth paste. Do you recommend using anything to break down and break up the old harden tooth paste that is sticking to the pipes?

Love your videos! Any chance you could add a segment about the tailpipe? I did not clean that out and it turned out to be the (embarrassing!) problem…

Hi and many thanks for your valued info. On a side note, I don't have a blockage but I do have push type drain stoppers that keep getting stuck in the down position. All of the waste is always clean and I spray a little WD40 to try and keep them lubricated, but every couple of months they stick closed. I'm actually considering removeing and replacing them with the good old fashioned rubber ones, but not being chrome, they'll probably look rubbish. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Got my subscribe with that zip tie trick. I have a small snake with a bristle end which I always use - cheap at 2-3$ but the zip tie is a cool repurpose trick

#4……..The drain doesn’t go straight down (joist is in the way), I noticed this when the home was built 18 years ago. I cleaned the p trap, etc and it still drained slowly. Next step would be to auger the next 3 feet of pipe around the 22 degree fitting to pass the joist. Thanks for your video! Jim PS……after the holidays…..

My older apartment sinks (and bathtubs) get hair clogs a few feet into the drain that I have to snake on a pretty regular basis. Any advice on how to keep hair out of the sink and tub (aside from the standard screw-on tub screen). Some of the bath sinks are back-to-back so the snake wants to run across to the other sink instead of into the wall and down the drain. I invented a little guide to tease the snake down where it belongs.

I have the pop-up type with a screw cap which you can just unscrew the top and pick out the grunge to return the sink to proper drain performance in most cases without needing to disconnect the under sink pivot-rod connections.

I am at home that has no stopper installed someone installed abs p style but all glued there is no serviceable parts other than cut it all out. Hot water didn't change any time difference in draining. But at least it's not solid clog. I ran a 1/4 4ft snake and didn't run into anything so it's past the inside pipes. Would the lye be wise or call a plumber.

In my experience it has been the down tube. I take a rag and tie a string to a corner and a weight (like a nut) to the other end of the string. I drop the weight through the down tube and pull the rag through.

You video is very helpful but I think I need that “cheap udder”. Where can I get it?

A bottle brush can be good for cleaning buildup out of sink-pipes, just as paper towels will work.

Thanks for the video unfortunately after doing all 3 steps my sink drain is still clogged. It was still good to learn about the 3 steps.

What should I do if I cleaned the drain and can't get the p trap back on sufficiently with no leaking?

I've done all those things in your video. Plus I've tried Draino, Dawn professional dish soap and vinegar with soda. A plumber has tried an electric snake. The drain is still clogged and I haven't a clue what to do.

My bathroom sink appears to be clogged all the way back into the wall drain. What do you recommend?

8/5/23 I messed up. I have a pivot rod type drain stopper. The stopper was in and I thought I could get the plastic orange snake in between the holes in the drain stopper. I got it all the way down but it is STUCK. I tried using a wrench to unscrew the nut to where the pivot arm is but it is on so tight from the plumber. I cannot unscrew it. I hoped I could unscrew it, release the pivot arm and the drain stopper (with the plastic snake) would be released. I hoped I could pull up both the stopper and the orange snake. Now, I think I have to have the plumber come. My landlady uses one of those roter rooter services. I would prefer the push up stopper like I had before. It was easy to remove and all I did was use the snake. I hope I did not break anything. Can a push up stopper be put in instead?

The best DIY drain fighting tool I've ever used? A wet/dry vacuum. When the tub-shower gets clogged with my female roommate's long black hair, I get my 3 HP Ridgid wet/dry vac, set it to "wet" configuration, run hot water in shower until about 1" of hot standing water is above drain, then shut off water and shove the wet/dry vac's round nozzle onto the drain and hold it tight to the round drain hole for 3 seconds. Remove vac nozzle from drain hole, turn hot water on again for a minute, and check drain rate. Repeat process one or two more times until water is flowing freely, or until enough long hair has been pulled halfway up out of the drain that needle-nose pliers can remove the rest. Dump filthy water from vac into gutter and then wash out inside of vac.

Do yourself a favor and get a hair strainer from the big box store. It'll be so much less work for you. I used to have to snake out my shower drain regularly for the same reason. I had a plumber in the house for a different job and mentioned the recurrent problem to him and he advised me to get a hair strainer. I didn't know they existed. Since I bought it years ago I've not snaked the drain since. They make all kinds, out of plastic. But they also sell a metallic assortment of 3 different sizes that are the best. The medium size fits perfectly in my walk-in shower floor drain and since I am the "plumber" I get to easily clean it before my shower. I don't mind the daily job when I think about the old way. The small one fits a sink if you were to take out the pop up drain plug and I use the large size upside down taped and sealed over the garden tub drain when I bathe (shower) our dog. If you have a regular tub with a shower just look around for something that fits. Good luck.

My goose neck is made of metal and does not have a way to pull it out. I think the clog is in there because the P trap and other parts are clear of guck. Any ideas? I thought of using a drain auger, but I don't know if I can bend it around the goose neck.
