    Hi Jeff, I noticed yesterday in my KTM 2017 that 13 mm of outer spring preload causes 0 mm of inner spring preload, so this is the point when inner spring starts to work. In this setting both springs start the work when power valve wants to start opening. Isn't it the main reason why you suggest to set exactly 13 mm of preload?

    Ive lost some performance on my 17 300 XC-W I bought new. I purchased a Lectron Carb from you which is awesome other than the float bowl gasket gets wet damp after a ride you can see it a little dirty. But lately I feel I have lost some higher rpm. Is My powervalve out of adjustment perhaps?

    Thanks for doing this Jeff. I set my 'Z' setting per the manual but when I look up in to my exhaust port my flapper valve is held open by a good 35%. So I readjested my PV rod to where the flapper valve is just bottomed out with slight downward pressure, because I assume this will greatly improve low end power. Is there any reason that I shouldn't be doing it this way? Thanks!

    Around the 12:45-13:00 mark Jeff mentions he would rather you lower the engagement point of the PV because if you raise it too high there won’t be enough preload... I thought adding preload (turning in the brass adjuster) raised the PV starting point and lessening the preload(backing out the brass adjuster) lowered the PV starting point. Am I missing something?

    Does the PV make a knocking or clanking noise when it's not under proper pre load? My 22 tc 250 with 6 hrs on it makes a noise with no real pattern to it coming from front of engine. The power doesn't seem very smooth either. Doesn't make the noise in neutral free revving. I can feel the PV opening and closing if I go down long straight road in 3rd gear, steady throttle slowly increasing throttle not over a quarter turn. Feels like it opens slow and maybe too low rpm. This is factory setting with yellow spring. Should add I've rejetted mikuni with JM and new block gasket. Already pulled pipe off and PV covers, everything is tight.

    Hi Jeff, all the other reading and information I have come across says that the green spring is the softest and gives the best overall power curve without such a hit as opposed to the red. However they were saying it's because the green spring allows the valve to open sooner not later like your manual says? They said that red means it will build up more rpm before opening which means it hits harder, but this is the opposite of what your manual says. Any clarification on that?

    Red is softest, so it allows the valve to open more easily, giving you the harder hit. The stiff green spring holds it closed, and gives you the "soft" power curve.

    so I assume if you do not have the initial 13mm you should back the adjuster in or out until your close? My power valve arm rattles inside the housing when it is engage/disengaging, I recently service the pv and nothing stood out as being suspect, it is a 06 so it has some hours on it, is this rattle something I should be concerned about? Thank you for your time and consideration Jeff, I appreciate all of the resources you offer.

Maybe I'm confused here, but I thought you would have to add more preload to get it to open at a higher RPM. Am I missing something? Thanks

Are KTM just covering their arses by stating this?

    I don't fully understand what the 13 mm preload information is doing for me. If you make an "adjustment" later do you loosen and measure again to see how much it went up or down. How do you use the tach to help set power valve? I am aware making adjustments will increase or decrease initial opening of the valve. So why is the 13 mm important?

  • @GertBowker

    @GertBowker

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yeah me two, no idea So why is the 13 mm important? I guess the 13 mm is the amount of clearance for you to adjust should you turn it all the way in I guess. Jeff ?

  • @codyjoseph44

    @codyjoseph44

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'm guessing he has done the testing, and found out that 13mm of preload (with the yellow spring) is a great starting point to get him in the ball park of the PV starting to open at the recommended 5,600 rpm's. That way it will just take minimal adjustments to fine tune it, and the marks on the case and adjuster gives a reference point if you want to start over at 13mm preload. That's how I took it anyways. I'm sure there would be a better starting point for the red and green spring. No matter what spring you are running, you want them all to START opening around the same time. This is where the tach comes in if you want to be very precise. You can pull the PV cover, rev the engine and see at what RPM the linkage arm starts to move. Then you just adjust accordingly so that its starts to open around 5,400 - 5,600 RPM. The difference between the springs is just how long it take for them to FULLY open, not when they should start to open. So obviously the light red spring will fully open much faster than the stiff green spring. The quicker the PV opens (red spring), the bigger and more noticeable burst of power you will feel (harder hit). The slower and more gradual the PV opens (green spring), the smoother and more manageable the power will feel. The yellow spring (most preferred) falls in between the other two. When choosing which will work best you must consider your other modifications, riding style, terrain, size of bike, and of course your personal preference.

Take care and happy trails man!

  • @keithcastleberry3993

    Gert... the 13mm is just the "magic" number (distance) he achieved using that specific spring and "lightly" putting bolts in to hold cap up without compressing the spring any. Just very light tension on spring. Now, once pressed in and snug against case...there is 13 mm of "preload" . The mark he made consider that zero. Turning PV adjustment screw clockwise will increase preload on spring and ccw will lessen preload. If I understand correctly, with the engine running and the PV cover off, turning the PV adjuster screw will change when the PV starts to open. The goal is to adjust it, rev it and watch linkage and RPM (get a friend to help) Try to dial it in to when the PV starts opening when RPM's reach the 5400-5600 range. As Cody mentioned to me above, ALL springs start opening at that RPM range. The lighter springs allow PV to open fully in a narrower RPM band. The heavier springs will make the power feel more linear and manageable by opening up fully later over a longer RPM band. I hope I made sense. I believe I got it now and wanted to try and help. Hopefully I did. Good luck.
