    In regards to using the PTD app....your line counter reels need to be calibrated, and line diameter must match your line selection on the app also. These two factors are key to getting your lures to run the correct depth, using the app.

    Awesome video man! Im new to walleye fishing and ill be trolling out of my kayak. I just picked up 2 trolling combos. I was wondering what kind of line, and what pound test? Also i noticed you have a swivel on your flicker minnow, what kind is it? Thanks a lot this video was very helpful!!

    Thank you! Generally 10 to 12lb monofilament is what we use for our planer board rods. As far as the swivel goes, that is actually just a VMC Duolock Snap (no swivel).

    @walleyefishing38495 жыл бұрын

    what was that clip that you clipped the line to the board? I have those boards, but they just have a simple snap clip. Problem is, unless you use heavier line (20#) the clip won't hold the line, and in choppier water, it eventually pulls out as well.

    Great explanation! I've always run lead core instead, dumb question but do you need to then take into account the line from the board to your reel? IE if thats an extra 10 ft the depth curve of the lure changes or does it start from the board to the lure?

  • @littlewar141

    @littlewar141

    Nope, the dive chart would be determined from the length of line from the back planer board release. Line from the reel to the front planer board release has no relevance to the baits running depth.

  • @MadisonAngling

    We have to agree with Pete. The only distance that influences the lure's dive is the line from the lure to the board. Awesome to see you run leadcore! It's a dying art!

  • @MadisonAngling

    In this video we were using 10lb mono. As far as leadcore goes, it all depends on the speed you are trolling and the dive curve of the baits you are pulling with it. Generally if I am trolling water less than 15 feet I don't run leadcore, however, that's just me! Here is a video I shot with Todays Angler a few years ago using leadcore: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i62Lt8hwf5vWk5M.html Hopefully this summer I can get out and shoot a more in depth leadcore video!

    That was good. Since the side planer is attached to the line, when you are pulling in the fish do you have a friend pull off the planer or do you do it yourself and how do you keep the tension on the line?

  • @MadisonAngling

    @MadisonAngling

    6 жыл бұрын

    Ken, That is an EXCELLENT question! It does work best to have another person in the boat who can take the board off for you, that way you can focus on keeping tension on the fish. It certainly can be done solo, but it takes practice.

    Would just a regular spinning rod work for this?? My dad and I talked about using planer boards in the Boundary Waters for YEARS....but for portability, we're somewhat limited to carrying in one or two rods per person in the canoe. The planer boards would be great for getting the line out and away from our paddles while we travel from place to place....another great way to put more fish in the boat:-).

  • @MadisonAngling

    Absolutely! Offshore Tackle actually makes a mini planer board (OR38) that is perfect for spinning rods and other light tackle applications. They are quite a bit smaller than the regular OR12's as seen in the video, and are very portable and packable!

    How do you know how much line to let out to get to your depth

  • @MadisonAngling

    @MadisonAngling

    5 жыл бұрын

    Every lure is different so the dive curves vary. Some lures like Berkley Flicker Shads have a dive chart on the packaging, while others do not. The precision trolling data app is a great tool for looking up how much line to let out to get just about any crankbait ever made down to whatever depth you desire!

    Generally if you are on White Bass, it is time to move to a new spot. Another thing you can do as well is slowing down. The White Bass tend to like baits that are moving fast.

    Perhaps you might adjust the drag such that a fish will not meet any resistance when it takes the lure??

  • @MadisonAngling

    @MadisonAngling

    7 жыл бұрын

    The resistance is what actually sets the hook on the fish, so we do want some resistance in this case.

  • @superdad4sure

    @superdad4sure

    7 жыл бұрын

    We reset the drag to a light tension without the planer boards peeling drag and when the fish strikes,, the reel and planer board give and lets the fish take the lure and turn and get hooked. Otherwise at the first feel of tensionl the fish will open its mouth and spit the hook . That's what we have found to work for us. David aka Superdad4sure

    @@superdad4sure if you are trolling at roughly 2-3mph, and a fish slams that plug with 2 treble hooks, it isn't going to spit it, it should get stuck pretty good. It isn't exactly finesse fishing

    How do you tell if you have a fish on if you don’t have a tattle flag system?

  • @MadisonAngling

    @MadisonAngling

    5 жыл бұрын

    Brian, It certainly depends on how fast you are moving and how big the fish is, but typically without the tattle flag system the board will drop back from the weight of the fish. That said sometimes fish (especially walleyes) will swim with the board after they are hooked so it can be somewhat difficult to tell if there is a fish (especially a smaller one). When in doubt crank in some line to feel if there is any added resistance. Worst case scenario you bring the line in, unclip the board and feel the line to see if you can feel the bait thumping or if there's something pulling back. Hope this helps!

    We are running 6 to 8 lines for suspended fish that are spooked by the boat. The boards not only keep the lines from tangling but also get the baits away from the boat to help prevent spooking fish. Sure, if the fish aren't bothered by the boat you don't have to run boards, however, the point of the video is to show how to use boards.
