    Agreed! I was baffled that the laminate flooring mfg we chose didn't have any threshold strips. I was wondering how to tackle exactly this application, the sliding door and even the front door. I've watched so many "how to lay laminate flooring" videos but NONE cover the little details like this that can stall finishing the project. Plus I could have cut the laminate incorrectly if I didn't prepare for this transition.

    This was extremely informative, even though I bought a house that already has flooring up to the door wall. Mine is not correct, as was a lot of things that were done. This makes it dangerous for people to walk on. I’m on my 60’s and need a smooth transition. I actually fell hard because a friend’s sliding glass door tracks stick up about 3” over the floor. I sent him a message talking about how to remedy the situation snd he thought I was kidding, but when you get older, you need to take these things into consideration. I also liked the T mold transition. What do you use when there are two wood floors? The previous owner just has a piece of curved wood because they are different heights. I heard you say you need a reducer. I’ll check into that, because I constantly either catch my foot on it, or get my sock stuck in the nails! Thank you!

    I patch it beforehand and works fine plus add the T holding or white weather strip looks like an L shape that holds the bottom area to attach on top of the plank then glued it. I think you can used that T holding transition in boiler room area when they don’t have wall for the plank to attach to.

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    3 жыл бұрын

    Your boards should not be butting up against the frame, you might have to cut them. If they have been there years and there has been no expansion problems, then just find a molding strip that is flat to glue along the edge by the frame. But preferred method is to leave enough space from end of the flooring to the metal frame to fit your threshold piece.

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    5 жыл бұрын

    John, on my T-mold in the second half of this video, no the center stem part of the T-Mold was not touching the concrete floor, but there was a thick bead of PL Adhesive put down, so that the stem would be embedded in it. Typically with T-Molds they come with a U-channel strip of metal which screws to wood sub floor, then your T-Mold stem will snap vertically down into it the U-channel like a clip. But with concrete floors you can't screw a U-channel to the floor, and with the depth of some tiles, sometimes I glue the U-channel to the concrete floor, sometimes I don't use the U-channel strip at all and just embed into PL Adhesive.

  • @paulegan2252

    @paulegan2252

    3 жыл бұрын

    If the depth is too deep for T molding to reach the u-channel on floor, why not place a plywood strip down first? This would also provide support when stepped on and be easier to remove if needed thsn glue. For concrete floors, could you not use a masonry bit with anchors and screws for u-chsnnel? Thanks.

    Very helpful! I've a question for uneven tile to laminate flooring. Laminate is 1/2 inch (12mm) and underlayment is 1/8 inch felt/vapor barrier. The tile is standard 1/4 inch thick. Should I go thick on the tile thinset to try to raise it up to the laminate level so I can get away with a T-molding transition or not bother and try to find some reducer transition strip? I'm thinking the latter choice may be hard to find something exact.

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    5 жыл бұрын

    Interesting idea. If you are using tile greater than 12", you should use a 1/2" trowel, which will mash down to about 1/4" thick, Then your 1/4" thick tile will make the stack-up 1/2" total. But you should see whether you can put a t-mold on these 2 floors which will now be 1/8" difference in height. I would experiment by just duplicating this 1/8 height difference with 2 pieces of tile, on resting 1/8" higher than the other, and lay a small piece of T-mold over it and see how it looks. Also keep in mind, other laws and building codes depending on where you live, if you are in a condo above someone, you are required to put 1/4" cork down under the tile first. Any time you tile a floor over a downstairs neighbor, you are required to sound proof the tile first. If it is just your single family home, no problem, but I'd still recommend some type of sound and vibration isolation if you are tiling on second floor.

    @@jeffostroff I went to HD to grab some laminate T-molding (what crap that stuff is but at least it shows me the size). I'm going to try and stain some hard wood T-molding. Anyway my house has a concrete slab so no downstairs neighbors unless gophers count! The tile is going straight down on the concrete with no underlayment. They are 12x24 and I usually use a 1/2 trowel but maybe I should really slather the thinset on so it raises the tile up to meet with the top surface of the laminate which will be at around 5/8 roughly. I'll experiment. Laminate is going first this weekend then the tile later. This is a kitchen area that we are tiling (we? I mean I, the "we" in our family means me)

    If you can, get a thin set mortar where the bag designates the mortar as LFT (Large Format Tile) or LHT (large Heavy Tile). This will be an enhanced low sag formula and look for the ANSI A118.15T number on the bag, the "T" at the end specifies a low sag mortar, this will hold the tiles up higher on the troweled out ridges. Also if you back butter the tile thick, that will help elevate them even more.

    After searching youtube for info I just watched your vid and you explained everything so well, thank you so much for this I have been searching for an answer and now I know the flooring in my home has been installed incorrectly. I bought the house recently but it's about 10 yrs old, the installers when it was built fit the planks right up tight against the tiling in the hall and there are no transition pieces from the living room to the hall, its straight up to the tile with just a pencil line width crack showing, the french doors don't have a threshold either, the floor is buckling up in front of the french doors and then right at the door it dips down a lot :( It's parallel to the french doors and the tiling in the hall, not going with the incoming light like you mentioned in your comments, Oh boy what do you suggest I do, I am willing to have a go but do I need a pro for this?

  • @jeffostroff

    You could either live with it or hire another company to come in and re-do it. Looks like the subfloor was uneven and they should have self leveled parts of it by the French Doors or installed shims to level it out.

    jeffostroff 2 hours ago Most of the wood flooring manufacturers make what they call Stair Nose, Which goes on the top of the step and make some nice rounded front of this step is this what you were looking for? You can Google it and see pictures of existing pieces. For exterior front door transitions, they usually use a metal plate that goes across the door, about 4" wide x 36" long, you buy them at Home Depot, and you have to use an angle grinder to cut it down to match the width of the door, then the plate is screwed down. Not sure which particular case you are talking about.

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    Are usually lever quarter of an inch to a 1/2 an inch and it depends on what the manufacturer of the laminate flooring tells you to do. Also if you're going to the sliding glass doors and you're using a threshold piece you leave about a quarter of an inch to a 1/2 inch gap underneath the piece from where the laminate flooring would hit the piece so normally I use a small piece of the threshold and do a dry fitting with it ahead of time so I know how to cut the laminate

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes you could have used floor leveler 1st one I don't know as depending on the thickness of that floor leveler do you have to let it cure for 28 days or not so you have to look at the instructions on the bag & see, depending on the thickness of your poor how long do you have to let it cure before putting any load on it. Of course in reality there is no load on it because nobody's going to be walking right there on top of it most likely. I would let it dry a couple of days before gluing down on top of it give all the humidity a chance to evaporate out of it.

    What would be the max height difference you would use the TMoulding on? I currently have a engineered hardwood (1/2") to an old 3/8" hardwood floor. I am currently hesiting on on using between a T-Moulding, a surface reducer that I would need to sand/trim by the hardwood height or a carpet reducer (found one that height match nicely, would sand down to ease one drop on one side).

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    6 жыл бұрын

    Erdanx0 I would try to make sure both floor surfaces are within an 8th of an inch of each other in height. You might get away with a quarter of an inch difference in height however your T molding will be at an incline which may not be too much of a problem as long as it doesn't look out of place. Others might look for a reducer piece instead.

    Hello. Do you have a solution for an improperly seated slider? There is a 2 3/4” difference between the floor and the top of the encasement causing a “step over” rather than a “walk through” the door. The deck is a “step down” which is natural, however, once a person steps over and down this can cause tripping. The distance is awkward to say the least. I.m seeking a safe solution or myself and my guests.

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    4 жыл бұрын

    That seems really out of whack! For a height difference like that, no one makes any transition pieces that high. You might want to look at having someone who is a finish carpenter mill you a transition piece that might start at the high point flush with the top of the step over, and gradually grade downward in a gentle slop. This might have to be 3 to 6 " wide instead of your normal 2" wide transition pieces.

    There are two ways that you can find strips like this. Down one of the hardware aisles right next to the construction materials I'll is a display where they have all sorts of metal tubing and metal strips and stuff like that and elbow angle brackets and that's where they keep them in standing up vertically in those little displays. Sometimes when you buy the T-molding over on the flooring Isles, they come with a little metal channel strip and I take that strip out and I flip it over to use it to give me just about 1/4 of an inch lift off of the floor.

    This piece would probably not work at your front door because if you look in the video you'll see that it needs a channel below the floor to rest down into. What I have done one time as I just ran Lee would all the way up underneath the doors transition plate the metal plate. So I would unscrew the plate install the flooring up to within a 1/2 inch or so of the end of the doorstop and then put the plate back down over it. You may also have to slice under your door jams in order for the wood flooring to fit under the molding.

    @@vrglcom It's really hard to visualize what their situation is. I keep a lot of 6" profile sections of T-molds, thresholds, etc., then we play what if games at the front door to see what fits and what does not. Often you visualize using one piece, but once you try dry fitting and the rubber hits the road you often realize you need another piece. Something that fixes one dimension often breaks another dimension, that causes you to revisit the drawing board.

    c v I have seen cases were the concrete floor came almost as high but never hire of the mat that would be a big mistake on somebody's part when the place was built. If you run into that you still need to have that threshold piece there but the problem is that it will be higher now than you probably intended to the floor of the door, probably not high enough to cause any problems for people walking through the door. If you have the tools and want to take the chance of performing this task, you can try to grind down the concrete and form a channel there so that it is now below the metal frame and then just set your threshold piece down in it.

    I just purchased solid wood flooring for a bedroom. The living room and hallway are already hardwood and were installed approximately 10 years ago. I’m planning to install the bedroom floor myself. I see that in other areas of the home it appears that they have installed right against tile. In the hall, they laid flooring perpendicular to floor as a transition at the door. All is flush. The floor has withstood this for ten years but I’m not a professional installer. I really like the look of that flush transition. Am I wrong with how they’ve installed the floor or is there a way to install it where it is flush like that and has the appropriate expansion gaps? I will have the exact same scenario in one doorway of the bedroom. Also, the home is very dry right now, I can tell the floor is in a very contracted state. The new wood is still acclimating but I’m worried that it will be so dry that it will have problems come summer time and the humidity levels rise. Is it just a bad time to install? What counter measures should I implement?

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    5 жыл бұрын

    Maybe the installers of that wood floor nailed it down and maybe it won't expand as much as a floating floor. If they installed against the tail, they might have gotten lucky and the wood pressed against the tile but did not buckle, and expanded the opposite direction. Who knows, but I always leave a room to room gape large enough to seat a T-mould transition piece. Also, you're going about this whole temperature humidity thing wrong, you should not be guessing, you should be using a humidity test meter to test the humidity level at the sub floor first. Your flooring instructions usually give you max limits of moisture levels that are allowed when measure by a meter. So that will take any guesswork out of the equation as to whether you can install ti or not. See our other video where we show you all about this and preparing the sub floor for installing wood/laminate: kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5WsrthuZdOtZ84.html

    This floor cannot be floated. It is solid 3/4” hardwood. I plan to nail down. I believe the existing hardwood is also nailed/staples. I will look into purchasing a meter. Is it only subfloor and hardwood moisture to worry about or also RH of air? Btw, it’s all being installed at grade over a crawl space.

    Maybe your installers should have watched this video first. Send them the link so they don't mess up other people's floors. You don't have data sheets on the laminate planks they used?

    @@4G64SicKShoT You have no clue how a T-mold works. The vertical part of the T-mold is supposed to land in the void, but you are supposed to make the void wide enough to fit the T-mold down into it. Remember, a t-mold barely offers you 3/4" of overhang for the wood planks to slide under it anyway. that has no connection to how wide your channel is. You are also supposed to cut the ends of your wood planks so that they stop 1/2" away from the center part of the T Mold, which is just barely underneath the horizontal overhang of the T-Mold. You obviously never read any instructions from the manufacturers or the wood manufacturers. You should NEVER glue the T-Mold onto the wood, because each plank can expand at a different rate. The mold should always remain stationary while the planks expand underneath it.

    These are all my properties. Those 6 foot long transition pieces cost $60 each at Lumber Liquidators. There is nothing wrong with having the seam in the middle or have it off center since no one will notice it, and is usually hidden behind vertical blinds. But you will find yourself growing tired of spending $120 to make a perfect seam in the middle of a sliding glass door. If you are a floor pro, I can bet nearly all of your customers will balk at paying that much for a strip of wood.

    Looks like your first problem is that you didn't properly prepare your floors before installing. A little self leveling cement would have completely solved your problem instead of that flimsy metal bracket that will spread out over time with people walking on it. Also, why did you only notch out one side of the transition strip between the tile and the wood flooring? That looks like crap.

  • @jeffostroff

    @jeffostroff

    2 жыл бұрын

    It is so easy for uninformed people like you in your armchair quarterback recliner to try to pick apart work that is done correctly. So for example you're handwaving about preparing the floors with self-leveling. That budget buster in a $70k condo would have cost almost $2000 in labor and materials to self-level the entire floor of that length of the dining room and living room. In fact, the last time we had one of those done in 2012 it cost $1400 in a townhouse. When it's obvious that you don't need it done all you have to do is cement down this metal track that the manufacturers provide with the trim wood and this is done every day, it is secure, and strong, not weak like ignorant people with no experience claim. So you're trying to make a failure mode that doesn't exist. Also this is a threshold piece at the very end of the floor people aren't walking on it because it's at the sliding glass doors and for most of it's going to be covered by the Vertical Blinds in anyway so you're completely making up false scenarios that don't even exist, maybe their toe touch it, but this setup with this grade of thick adhesive is like a rock even with full weight load. Ask for the notched transition piece between the tile and the wooden floor a number of people looked at it with me and conferred that notching it is the best way to do it it looks more professional to have the piece wrap around the corner than it does to just have it go straight it looked awkward if you were to cut it straight. So bullet points here you're batting zero you completely knew nothing about it
