How to thresholds. Cut and install floor transitions. Easy!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey Home Menders! Dustin shows how to cut and install oak wooden thresholds for a new floor. There is nothing worse than an awesome floor with a cheesy transition....That means no carpet trim, laminate paper thresholds or no transition at all. You can cut and install solid oak, stained to match your floor that looks like a top dollar installation for a fraction of the cost of pre-finished material. Don't forget to check out the tool box below for some cool stuff! You can do it!

    YOU'RE SO AWESOME! I spent the winter month's giving my entire kitchen a DIY facelift from top to bottom! I'm just now today finishing my new vinyl flooring and didn't know what to do about the transition's, which I have 3 of,...one goes from the new vinyl, to a carpeted bedroom, another from new vinyl, to vinyl (same level) in bathroom, and the 3rd, new vinyl to ceramic tile foyer and I was starting to panic having coming this far and wondering what I was able to put down! You just saved me a TON of undue stress!!!!!! I commend you and LOVE your video's and you as a person are so cool,....excellent musical intro too! I'm a 54 yr old rocker and always will be :) Thanks a million!!!! Audrey

    When i bought my house, i hired some craigslist guys to install my laminate floor. They did an ok job with the floor, but for reasons pertaining to their poor work ethic, i let them go with the transitions still remaining. They've been in my garage for 6 months, and i'm using these social isolation days to do projects. Thresholds today. I noticed i had both T-transitions and the step-transitions still in the box. Youre video did a perfectly fine job of explaining what i've got, and how to install them. Time to go to work. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

I don’t have the T piece yet but want to go as far as possible today. I’m seeing online that I should leave a 1 to 1 1/4 inch gap and that sounds insane. Wouldn’t it just be 1/4 or maybe 3/8 in order to accommodate just the middle lower part of the T? The rest of it sits on top of the flooring right? Thanks for any insight!

    Hey audio. Great question, I have run into this, you can miter the edge shave off of 45 of a one by six, if you mitered both sides you can create a decent transition for a wide space, you can use oak or pine both but both would work great. And then push in the threshold to it? None of the flooring is leveled. Am I using the wrong one? Any recommendations? Thanks!!

  • @homemend

    @homemend

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey josh. The u shaped ones with the track are for laminate flooring. I would try to use one like I had here. The solid wood is easier to shoot down or glue if needed. Sometimes you have to take the best solution even if no solution you come up with is the correct one, is it possible to trim out the edge of the laminate floor with a flat wood transition and then possibly grout the gap in the tile? If it’s going to look ridiculous than the answer is no, but I can’t see it. If you want to get plugged into the meeting at work you can send me messages upload pictures and we may be able to come up with a solution. 🙂

    I got some t molding going from lvp to carpet. Screwed in the transition track and now trying to snap in the strip. It absolutely will not snap into place and I am using a rubber mallet to try and snap it into the track. It will not snap in and the teeth on the strip are constantly breaking to pieces. Any ideas please?

  • @homemend

    Hey RB. I have never use the snapping kind because well as you know they are terrible. Are usually use hardwood as in this video. Then you can either shut them down, screw them down or glue them down. I hope this helps

    @@homemend thank you. The track was to narrow so I spread the track further apart so the transition strip would actually snap into the track center.

    Shouldnt have you've used a U Channel and then insert it into your molding that is glued into the concrete? I see what you did and it looks good. Is there a lot of videos out there that tell you not to do it that way? Lol they claim you'll get worse like that longevity? I'm just confused

    Hey Dave, I never like those prefab U-channel deals. I like to use straight red oak or white depending on your floor. Whatever works for you is best. You got this

    Thanks for the video. I know it would be a pain in the ass but that shoe molding looks like crap around the transition. A better final product would be trying to cut around so the shoe molding was still going over the top. It was tight, though, so might not have been possible. Does not look great. Imo shoe molding sucks, anyway. Last resort type of trim.
