    The screenwriters said that out of all the kids, they needed Astrid to represent the island's "old ways," and she had to be a hard-arse and the absolute hardest one to convince, so that her conversion would symbolize the progression of the entire way of life. (And I love her dragon ride, the point where she waves her arms in the air and smiles like the young kid she really is, for the first time in the film. It's a rough culture.)

    Fun fact; toothless’ cuteness isn’t a mistake, and it wasn’t made from scratch. They modelled his behaviour and movement on cats! The way they animated him was, as they said, ‘like putting a cape on a cat’. That’s why he’s so bouncy and curious, he’s literally acting like a giant kitten with wings

    The dad being desperate to stop the fight makes perfect sense to me. Imagine your kid training to be say, a lion tamer. Only to remove all their protective gear and attempt to pet a lion clearly growling with anger. [Spoilers for the 2nd movie] It's also said that Stoic was defensive about Hiccup acting the way he was, because that is exactly how Valka got taken away from him, and for all he knew she was killed by the dragons. He was trying to save Hiccup before history repeated itself.

    @@AtomixKingg Yes, yes! But he's Stoick, and has no other love language besides "GET BACK INSIDE." ❤️ The thing that a lot of people don't pay attention to as well is how nearly *every devastated, awkward, or confused expression on Hiccup's face* is followed by the same or similar on Stoick's when they interact, but they never see it on each other. (This is my favorite film. So yes, I have watched it in slo motion and in different languages and transcribed about half of it on LiveJournal in a botched attempt to brush up my French. I am weird and must learn to embrace it. 🤣) Cressida Cowell began the book series to demonstrate the the complete lack of understanding yet steel strong love between herself and her own father, and raved about how well this film captured it even with a very different plot. That shocked-pride look on Stoick, watching his baby flying on a Night Fury and saving them all, is worth everything ❤️

    Some little small moments / details in the movie (that I can remember off the top of my head): - being able to tell Toothless' moods from how dilated / slitted his pupils are - Toothless being a little shit and flying like a wild dragon, and only stopping after Astrid apologized - The fear on Toothless' face when his tail is burning during the final battle, diving straight down with the Mama Dragon right behind - Toothless only revealing that he had saved Hiccup after Stoick apologized (Toothless and apologies, man) - Toothless losing his left fin on his tail while Hiccup lost his left foot - I suppose it's karma but at the same time, I think it's a beautiful parallel instead sorry for the long comment, I'm just a really big fan of the entire franchise ansnvajnfdrf

    At the end, after the Queen is killed, and Stoick is kneeling over his son, I imagined that on the rocks above and behind them was a whole flight of Valkyries waiting to carry him off to Valhalla, if he had died. Because, seriously, a kid who, had the courage to stand against his Father, Chief, and village, when he knew they were wrong, was the first person to take down a Night Fury. Them tame befriend and ride it, create a whole profession of Dragon trainer/riders. Then rode them into battle, and with just him and his dragon, killed the Queen that the entire tribe combined, couldn't scratch. If ANYONE would get a Valkyrie escort to the afterlife he would. Hell, they'd probably fight over getting to take him.

    The giant dragon (called a Red Death) is not a "momma," it's a tyrant. More specifically, an alpha species of dragon. It's commanding presence directs other smaller dragons to collect food for it, even against their wills. It's because of the Red Death that the other dragons raid Berk in the first place, and the only reason the dragons attack them at all.

    So as it's explained in the TV show (which starts before the 2nd movie), in Berk, Hiccup is a name given to the runts of the baby animals. It's a name meant to symbolize weakness and clumsyness. Obviously, it's a name Hiccup's mother would've chosen for him, not Stoic, likely as a way to show that even someone who is born weak and clumsy can (as in a possibility) grow up to be strong and stoical.

  • @UniqueKwon
    @UniqueKwon2 жыл бұрын

    the two statues in the beginning of the movie are actually Hiccup and Stoick. The statue on the left represents hiccup, the carvers weren't trying to exactly carve out Hiccup, but it symbolizes Hiccup. Hiccup doesn't have a mustache or anything like that but he does have a broken horn on his helmet in the books and is a fearsome swordfighter. The axe wielding statue on the right represents Stoick.The statues are basically the guards of Berk. They would meet any outsiders entering the island. This suggests Hiccup and Stoicks are integral guardians of Berk. Hiccup isn't a hero during the first movie, but after defeating the red death it totally makes sense now. Also, notice how the camera pans towards Stoicks statue in the first movie and in the gift of the night fury? But at the start of how to train your dragon 2, the camera pans towards hiccups statue assuming he'll be the next chief of Berk. The next time Hiccup acted as a guardian of Berk was when Drago and his bewilderbeast attacked Berk. The bewilderbeast crushed the axe wielding statue. Until this moment Stoick has been a great chief to Berk and a great caretaker of the village. Once that statue was destroyed, Drago then attacked Berk and the people needed Hiccup... the only statue standing....

Also, consider his point of view; he is a single father raising a son who thinks and acts completely differently than him, who's wife was killed by a dragon, all while also trying to lead a village, and deal with near nightly attacks from giant fire breathing lizards that even when they don't kill people or steal food that could lead to the entire village starving to death cause significant property damage leading to long and hard work of rebuilding homes and buildings. There is NOTHING in the first move to suggest that she's still alive somewhere and I H A T E that they retconned her into the movie. The accent is rather hard to explain away 🤣. The series' author Cressida Cowell based her atmosphere on the Scottish island her family used to vacation on, so I'm happy to consider it a tribute. And in her books, the Vikings are basically immigrants to Berk (only about one or two generations, if I remember correctly, though their relationship with dragons is quite different) and found the dragons there, so my twisted logic is that the adults have their original "home" accent and the kids developed a sort of Creole. Really there's no explanation but that the casting director really liked their voice actors.

  • @LangkeeLongkee

    @LangkeeLongkee

    Actually Vikings were mostly scandanavians and they voyaged a LOT so Vikings were all pretty much polyglots and had different accents from knowing so many different languages. So it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility to have different characters with different accents in a Viking village, especially for the adults to sound different than the kids.

Hiccup sparred Toothless when he had a clear opportunity to kill him, so Toothless did the exact same in return. A Dragon repaying a life debt to a human. 2)- Toothless's trial- He shows distrust in humans to the point where he wants them to reach their lowest point and show honest remorse. And he has this smug face like "Yes. I wanna hear you say it." Only then does he open up and trust them. He did this with both Astrid and Stoick. 3)- Stoick and Hiccup are opposite sides of the same coin, and this is confirmed by the line "I did this." Each character says it when he made a very grim mistake. Hiccup shooting Toothless and Stoick being too hard on Hiccup

    Hey, hey now. We do NOT pity the 'mama' dragon for being a cannibal and exploiting the workers with mind control! (Worse in the books where the dragons are sentient and speak.) [I also have to point out that while the kids are initially mean because kids are mean (until the see his competence and turn, which I love), the adults are "mean" to Hiccup because they literally want to keep him *alive*. He is VERY SMALL. For now.] Also this might be my favorite commentary vid about this film. (It is also my favorite film. And I am in my 40s now. I don't care, I adore it. I absolutely love the parent-child evolution and all the tiny details they incorporate, the cloth and the fire and the hair and how Hiccup is left handed and has a tiny scar on his chin through the entire franchise. It is ART.) I admit that the second film did not touch me as much, and I have not seen the third, but everything else (mini films, 2D cartoon short with Gobber, LOL, Christmas special, Netflix series), I've seen and enjoyed. (I read the book series during a really bad period of depression while working on a[n incomplete] doctorate, and honestly they were as lovely, but in a very different way. Geared toward a considerably younger audience, and with very different worldbuilding-although Cowell wrote in dragons big enough to ride after this film came out! :D The series is geared toward a considerably younger audience, but I believe that despite the massive divergence, the books and film series wound up ending the same way.) For me, nothing tops the story and production first film.

    As funny as it was, at 20:00 I was like "And she just throw herself on top of Hiccup to defend him from the dragon" As rough as you were for Astrid before her first flight, I would like to point out that she never picked on Hiccup for jokes, ones she jumped on him for not chosing a side, she also observes Hiccup and gave comment about him that was actual criticism, not isult (there is a big difference in intention). She actualy wishes Hiccup best, she just believes best is to become usefull in fighting dragons.

    I like watching people react to the first movie and them be like "Oh how could Stoic be like this! He's such a bad dad!" And then get whiplashed by the second movie. Stoic ain't the best dad but when you can see why he does the things he does, you really sympathize with him. He tries his best to be a dad AND a leader. And I think that's an amazing character right there

    Something that a lot of people don’t know about this movie is that it’s based off of a book series. And thing is, the movies are totally different. But both, are absolutely amazing in character and worldbuilding. It’s one of those rare instances of two separate masterpieces based off of one another yet totally different. I mean seriously, Astrid isn’t a thing in the books and has another girl who’s literally like Astrid except she’s super small. Then Toothless isn’t a Night Fury, he’s a Green Gardening Dragon which is super small. Probably the only two things similar between the movies and the books is that Hiccup is named Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. And Stoic is still exactly like Stoic. That’s pretty much where the similarity ends. The books are amazing, I seriously suggest reading them. They’re so different from the movies and it feels as though it’s a different story, because it is a different story.

    14:28 killed me lmao Btw, at 15:52, one of the vikings in that line-up says "nobody will miss that old nuisance!" which is why Stoik assumes he's gone. The villagers made it sound as if he left, rather than just meaning his "old self" is gone

This franchise is one of my favourites, and I was lucky enough to see it on my birthday when it was first released, so seeing someone watch HTTYD for the first time and capture on camera that whimsy and wonder that has long since faded into comfortable nostalgia is a joy!! Thanks for sharing, hopefully you enjoy the other two!!

    Stoick didn’t need a redemption. He wasn’t wrong. Hiccup gambled with the lives of the entire village. Hiccup secretly knew it wasn’t really a gamble. He should have lead with a warning, an explanation, before demonstration. But he’s a kid. He’s not perfect. And it was still overall rather impressive. What Stoick needed to do was apologize for overreacting, even if it was understandable. And he did. Now that I think about it, the movie centers around relationships. Stoick and Hiccup didn’t know how to communicate with each other. By the end they gained an understanding of each other and that finally allowed them to communicate properly and come closer together.

    when you say, "They lost a lot of men, right?" actually, if you look closely, you see that all ships are more crowded than when they first set out, because they lost a ship in the fight, but that also means they lost less than a single ships crew of people, so rather few people. Stoik is at least a very good leader in battle.

    Fun fact: in the books, Fishlegs is in fact Hiccup’s only friend. And in Race To The Edge they’re pretty great too. Which, btw, absolutely worth watching- having seen the series makes the last two movies hit ten times as hard. (Even though I’d already seen the second one it still added context that made what I’d already seen hit harder. Said context freaking tore me apart at the end of the trilogy lmao)

    4:32 "how come his dad has an accent and he doesn't" because Gerard Butler(the dad) is Scottish and was told to speak with as much of an accent as he could while still being understood by Americans. Hiccup was played by an American actor who was told not to even try an accent. So according to various sources that I do and don't trust this was because of centralized language and accents. All of the teens have a mild American accent (or normal accent) and all the elders have a Scottish accent because they still speak the proper old traditional language rather than the new version that their kids speak.
