Regarding that moment where Stoick said "you're not my son" it's for only a moment, but when we see him on the other side of the door, he stumbles back a step and has a look on his face like he couldn't believe what he just did and said to his only son. But then that warrior mindset sinks back in, pushing him forward since it's what he may think is best in long run. Not the disowning part, he definitely would've TRIED to make amends afterward.

It's a good soundtrack, but my favourite is still WALL-E (though it is kinda cheating using Hello Dolly too).

I’m usually very critical of sequels but this trilogy is amazing from start to finish.

Honestly, one of the only issues I had was that they kind of cut the personalities of the side characters. Maybe that's just because they gave them so much more to do in the show than the movies, but especially with Fishlegs, he's super smart and analytical in the first movie and the shows have him as basically Hiccup's righthand man, but in the next 2 movies he just kinda turns into a Ruffnut simp

I just cant stand how utterly one-sided are the villain characters. The 1st movie had a primary antagonist in the general sentiment of the people, and the alpha dragon was just an obstacle. But the 2nd and 3rd movie have just a generic "Im baaad hurr durrr" villains.

I would argue this is just an issue of screen time not writing differences. The show is the only thing that actually made them more than one dimensional characters. The movies always had them have one trait the whole movie.@@CrownofMischief

An important animation detail that often goes overlooked, but is very important in Stoick's characterization: After he tells Hiccup that he's not his son, the animators chose to linger on him and show him hesitating after walking out and slamming the door. If they had just ended after he walked out, we would just see him as this horrible person. But instead they showed that saying that to Hiccup had hurt him just as much as it had hurt Hiccup.

6:30 Hiccup is probably the most viking of the vikings, he's bold, pragmatic and a good deal reckless. As a son of Scandinavia, Hiccup is definitely one of us.

My Husband and I watched all three movies in theaters and we loved them so much that we went down the Aisle to "Test Drive" and had our first Dance to "Romantic Flight" (Astrids Theme, that plays when they fly together)

My favorite thing is that the animatiors used the physicality and characteristics of a cat as the baseline for Toothless and now when I see him it's all I can see!!!

What's hilarious is that Jay Baruchel, the voice of Hiccup, was also in the live action film The Sorcerer's Apprentice the same year this film came out (2010). In both films, Jay plays a lanky nerd with a connection to dragons and a crush on a blonde girl who has to defeat a great evil XD.

Fun Fact: - For Toothless/Night Fury, the crew designed him based on a multitude of animals and other objects. Behaviors of a cat and a bat, the wing shape of a manta ray, the black coloration of a black panther, and the flying style of a jet fighter. This rule also implies creating the other dragons to capture their behavior and character. - The reason why Night Furies can retract their teeth is to protect them whenever they fire their plasma blast which is hotter than fire. - Toothless meant to draw Hiccup's face since he saw the latter drawing the former. - The grass Toothless was rolling is officially named by Hiccup, dragonnip. Similar to catnip but for dragons - You can't blame the Vikings for wanting to kill every dragon after 300 years of fighting. Even if the dragons only doing it cause want to survive, especially being controlled by an evil alpha, the damage and loss they created weigh heavily on the Vikings' side. Years of countless battles grew to hate and frustration that neither side could find another alternative solution. One side sees them as monsters that constantly attack and ruin their lives, while the other sees enemies getting in the way of survival. It is understandable why Stoick calls Toothless "Devil", cause he thought he had lost a wife during previous attacks. - Here are the names of the team's respective dragons: Astrid = Stormfly, the Deadly Nadder Snotlout = Hookfang, the Monsterous Nightmare Ruffnut and Tuffnut = Barf and Belch. the Hideous Zippleback Fishlegs= Meatlug. the Gronckle - The huge alpha dragon is called the Red Death

i tear up during the scene at the end where hiccup and toothless are walking toward the door to the house, you can see that they're respectively missing their leg and wing on the left side specifically. it's a short but beautiful sequence to show another aspect of their connection

Easily one of the best animated trilogies you’re going to love these movies!

I always loved that scene with the dragon manual. It really solidifies the movies theme about ignorance, because the thing they fear the most is the thing they understand the least about. And that fear and ignorance makes them resist trying to learn and understand

First time I've seen someone not blame Stoick for the arena part. Like would you let your child walk towards a dangerous animal without any armour or weapons? It's easy to say "well he was showing them" but Stoick had only ever seen the bad side of the dragons. So it's 100% logical why he would want to stop that fight and protect his son

Senior year of high school, I got to play the music from this movie in one of my final concert band performances. To say it was one of my favorite concerts would be an understatement. We played music from Star Wars, How to Train Your Dragon, Monsters Inc, and more, and it brings me so much joy relistening to the score of this movie.

​@@sillykola50 race to the edge is deffo worth it, but to get full context you'd have to watch riders of berk and defenders of berk which does have shoddy animation but the story makes up for it, especially in race to the edge

The way they make the animation feel real is amazing! Great visuals, great writing, great characters...this movie has it all.

My favorite line might be: "Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile"

Personally I think the best line in the whole movie is Astrid saying. "First to ride one though". I feel like often in life all we need is just one person to believe in you and nearly everything becomes possible.

The soundtrack really does pull this film to a whole other level.

I have a real connection with this movie: I always felt like Hiccup during my teens through the mid 70's to the early 80's, with my dad being Stoic The Vast. during my childhood I was always terrified of him, and I always thought he hated me. but during my teens was when we started getting along, and when I came home from the Navy, you would have thought we had always been friends. my dad passed away 10 years ago this year, and I was going through some serious issues, but after a few years of counseling and dredged up everything about my childhood, I came to realize that my dad really did love me during my childhood, it was just that he didn't know how to show it until I became a teenager. and I discovered that I had been suffering from some serious mental issues all my life that didn't even have names at the time I developed them.

When this movie was released my father nicknamed me 'Soluço' (the Portuguese translation of 'Hiccup') because I looked and behaved so much like him at the beginning of the movie (and I liked a girl who looked similar to Astrid). I took it as a compliment, though, for he's awesome.

This will be forever be a favorite movie. Whenever I was flipping through channels and this was on, I had to watch it. Seeing your reaction was like watching it for the first time all over again. Thank you for that.

The "How to Train Your Dragon" series (all 3 of them) are truly excellent. Better than you would think a series of animated movies have a right to be. The story telling and the thought that goes into each of them is really, really good, and they're all an emotional roller coaster. Looking forward to your reaction to the next two. So glad you enjoyed this one.

This is one of the few gems where each movie in the series is its own separate masterpiece

Toothless is legitimately one of the most incredible dragons across any genre and any medium. The cutest, most badass, and most personality. I'm talking Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Eragon, even Vox Machina! And even if Hiccup is a bit of a punching bag in the beginning, he character arc is one of the best either. When Astrid asks him if its all "to save your pet dragon?!?" and all he says is "Yes".... That is such a strong moment. Not to mention, he is the ONLY one to kill a dragon in the whole movie.

And then her relenting with "okay" after a short pause. I'm not sure if it's her respecting his resolve or her realizing she agrees with his choice, but either way it's amazing. Feels like they subverted the trope of them fighting over that, instead giving her a moment of beautiful empathy that really redeems her as a character. Also I want to add that aside from unnecessary meanness, I don't think Astrid does anything wrong given the culture she was raised in. She was taught that killing dragons is the only way to protect her people. Once her views are challenged she adapts incredibly well. Only reason I'm saying all this is some people can't seem to get over her early characterization, but I think she has almost as good of an arc as Hiccup.

I hope so badly that you watch the tv show that takes place in between the first two movies!!! It’s called ‘Dragons: Race to the Edge’ and it’s absolutely wonderful. Gives tons of character building and just generally adds a lot to the world. I think you’d love it ❤️

Fun fact, Hiccup's not being facetious when he describes where Burk is at the beginning. Those locations like Hopeless, Freezing to Death and the Meridian of Misery are canon

@@funnylilgalreacts he absolutely is🤣 Hiccup is smallest, Toothless is long and lankey, and Stoick was a beat up, hefty big boy (between 5-10yrs old) stray that lived outside on my porch for couple months. So the name just fit perfectly 🤣

Spitelout was the random Viking who often yelled "Night Fury" He's also Snoutlout's dad, and Stoick's younger brother. Meaning Hiccup and Snotlout are cousins. This was more important in the novels

David Tennant narrated all of the audiobooks for the novels that this film was loosely based on. I assume because of that, he does the voice of one of the minor viking characters in this film. Hard to pick him out, though.

Stoick didn't tell Hiccup he was proud of him only because he saw what Hiccup could do. Stoick's always loved his son, but the beginning of the movie makes it pretty clear that they both approaching their frayed relationship with a misconception about the other. Hiccup thinks Stoick is disappointed in him because he's small and weaker than all the other vikings, but as we learn from Stoick's talk with Gobber, Stoick loves Hiccup very much, he just doesn't know how to handle him being different, so he worries about him. Stoick's disappointment at the start of the movie is rooted more in something he made clear while admonishing Hiccup after the opening skirmish with the dragons; Hiccup's established a pattern of going outside during the battles when he's not supposed to, putting himself and other people in danger and causing destruction to the village while trying to capture/kill a dragon to prove himself. Stoick told Hiccup he was proud of him because he recognized that even though the two of them are vastly different people, Hiccup still came to his people's aid, even after being shunned and disowned. He realized that his son hadn't been putting himself and other people in danger because of some selfish desire to win favor and get a girlfriend, but because he wanted to belong, and more than that, make Stoick proud. He wanted to make sure Hiccup knew that he's proud of him for who he is, and not just for what he can do.

Loved this movie! The scene when he reaches out to touch Toothless, and Toothless moves in... So good.

I can't think of another film or TV show that so well captures the sheer beauty and joy of flying.

i’m one of the rare few that actually doesn’t love the trilogy as a whole QUITE as much as everyone else (just the third one honestly) but this one? this one will always and forever be a 12/10 for me. easily one of my favorite movies of all time! so happy to see you enjoy it. 💙

36:00 Spitelout is only in a couple of scenes in the film(s), but he is one of the higher ranking members of the tribe. (Apparently, according to the original book series, he might be Stoick's brother, but I haven't read them so I can't confirm, and the canon of the books is completely different to the canon of the films, so that may not be the case here). He's the one that Stoick commands to lead the men to the far side of the island when the big dragon shows up. He's also Snotlout's father. He gets a bit more fleshed out in the tie-in TV shows (Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk, Race to the Edge), and Tennant does reprise the role, so if you want more of him, that's where you need to look.

As a Scandinavian, I just want to say that the dragon boats are actually historically accurate 😂 Also, this is one of my favourite movies, so happy you watched this! ❤

The parallel of Hiccup losing his left leg after Toothless lost his left tailfin...and that after giving Toothless a prosthetic tailfin, Hiccup got a prosthetic leg...so good! The music was definitely a main character in this film, Just perfect. HIGHLY recommend "Dragons: Race to the Edge", the TV show with most of the OG voice actors, including Jay and America. Great extended foray into the universe of HTTYD.

The story, narrative, dialogue, characters... they're all amazing but the soundtrack is what gave me chills the most!

When he says hes proud to call him his son it's not because of him riding a dragon its because he showed true spirit and curage showing that he isnt just hiccup but is really a strong and confident kid. stoic didnt mean what he said at the hall and wanted to reconcile

Something I just noticed now: Hiccup and Toothless's relationship begins with Hiccup helping Toothless to fly. At the end of the movie, Toothless helps Hiccup to walk.

Wonderful reaction and mirrored mine (and most everyone's). I had no idea how emotional the movie would get me so this was a great surprise. You're practically the perfect person to react to this movie! : ) It's I think the only Dreamworks Animation movie that stands shoulder to shoulder with Pixar's best. The trilogy is really worthwhile.

It's already been mentioned that the animators based Toothless' movements on cat behavior, but go back and watch his pupils. When he's feeling threatened or aggressive they're like a cat's eye, but when he's more relaxed they're round, and very expressive.

Fun Facts: Hiccough almost didn't lose his leg, but it got great reviews from the kids in the test screenings. The montage where Hiccough trains Toothless wasn't originally dialog free but when they got the footage and music together it was felt the dialog took away from the scene. I'd have more but I haven't watched the commentary track in years

Spitelout is Snotlout's dad and can be seen standing next to Stoic along with Gobber in some shots. And to he honest, I didn't even know he had lines in this movie. He does have lines in the shows Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to The Edge which I would totally recommend you watch before the second film, along with the shorts Legend of the Boneknapper, and Gift of The Night Fury.

Absolutely love your heart! This is one of the most beautiful films ever made. I, too, had a solid black cat who didn't like men, but for some reason, loved me. Probably because when I first met him, I did what Hiccup did ... let him come to me and didn't pursue him. I cried like a baby when I lost him. I now have a Russian Blue, who i adore, but can be a bit of a turd from time to time, but loves to cuddle up to me on his terms. The dragons bounce back and forth between catlike and doglike, which is one reason people fall so in love with this movie. The two sequels are well worth watching, but keep the tissues handy for both of them. I'll look forward to sharing them with you, you are certainly a fun virtual companion to share them with. This movie and Coraline were the only films to ever really justify seeing it in 3D. Both were life-changing experiences in the theater.

Glad your watching these, This is what i would call a perfect film. Brilliant script, amazing cinematography, epic score, epic acting. In fact it is one of those rare instances where the entire trilogy is perfect. Not going to lie i did get tears several times through this trilogy. I watched it in HD the other day and it is still utterly breathe taking, i really don't understand why they are instant on remaking/ doing live action for this. It really doesn't need it, its perfect the way it is.

This whole trilogy is FIRE! I know you will love every one. And yes toothless is a mix of the animators pets, mainly cats.

A nearly perfect film. Did you notice the parallel between Toothless's disability and Hiccup's disability? Although Hiccup can walk without Toothless, at least at first, they show Toothless holding Hiccup up so that he can walk. They help each other. It's a beautiful parallel, and disabilities are so infrequently represented in movies, especially with main characters.

35:58 sadly David Tennant only had one line in the movie, at least that made it to the final cut. In the opening dragon attack, he's the viking that tells Hiccup "Get inside!"

This quickly became my favorite animated film and I just ate up every form of media from this world. This is one of the best film trilogies. Definitely check out the other films.

LETS GO. This is by far one of the best animated film trilogies ( though lately I have been on a real Into the Spiderverse kick ). This trilogy is so cute and fun and more than just a kids movie. Absolutely cannot wait for the rest of the trilogy reactions!

John Powell's music for this film - and its sequels as well - is absolutely phenomenal. Every single theme is its own distinct earworm. They're so much fun to listen to, and you can hear the characters develop through their themes. I didn't enjoy the sequels quite as much as this one, but the music continued to be top-notch throughout. Much of Toothless' movement was indeed based on his lead animator's cat. This should explain everything. This movie was among the first in the wave of 3D animated features that were actually made for 3D, and it is one of the few where I felt that the 3D component was so imaginatively used. If you thought the romantic flight with Astrid looked beautiful, it was breathtaking in the theater. The fight with the giant dragon at the end was epic in 3D; the shot where it's frustrated and blasts a trail of fire in the air around it was stunning. I'm not a huge fan of 3D, but this was an exceptional use of the format (Up and Martin Scorsese's Hugo also used 3D to best advantage). There is an IMAX 3D conversion that sometimes gets theatrical showings. I can't recommend that enough.

I actually understood Hickup's father. He is a leader, and as such, has to make decisions about what's best for his people. He has preconceived notions about everything, which, okay was wrong, but based on everything he knew, was right. Anything that questions his beliefs MUST be wrong... until he sees for himself that he was wrong and is not ashamed to quickly admit that. It takes a pretty big man to admit he's been wrong all of his life.

Hearing you say that fighting a dragon hand to hand is insane made me remember my favorite movie of all time, Reign of Fire. If you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend it for once you’re done with this trilogy. It doesn’t get nearly enough reactions on KZread for how great a movie it is. The cast is surprising A-list and the effects are still amazing 20 years later

I haven’t thought about that movie in a while. While it is definitely no masterpiece, I agree that it is thoroughly enjoyable and worth at least watching once to form your own opinion about it.

Man, protagonists like Hiccup are great, much better than I would of been at his age. If I had an entire community treat me the way they were treating him, I would of been a very hateful and cynical person that kept to myself for my whole life. Goes to show that when you let other people's false perceptions and assumptions about you affect your own sense of self, you will be the one hurting in the long run. Great movie.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies and this is one of the greatest animated trilogies of all time! It has maybe the best score, especially the flying theme called First Flight and the Hiccup and Astrid love theme called Romantic Flight.

Sooooo excited when this video popped up. How to Train Your Dragon is one of those rare trilogies where every movie is amazing and all together they are perfection. Can't wait for you to watch them all!

One of the best movie trilogies ever. Of any genre. All 3 are 10/10

Since you asked about David Tennant during the end credits: I looked it up and apparently Tennant has a small cameo: @5:17, listen for the voice that says "I'm with you Stoick!". That's him. Tennant also lends his voice for the audio versions of the children's books that this franchise is based off of.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it before, but Spitelout, voiced by David Tennant, doesn't have any speaking parts on camera, but if you listen, you can tell it's his voice that always call out the frantic warning "Night Fury!" whenever Toothless shows up.

I really liked this movie and I loved the way you invested yourself into these characters ! I love it when people can enjoy this type of animation as more than just a cartoon. It's hard to find a Kindred spirit !

The shows (and micro series* of shorts originally packaged with the movie) tells us about different classes. Toothless is what's known as Strike class. Characterized by high speed, good firepower, and keen intelligence. So yes, one of the smartest dragon breeds. And one of the only sociable ones of the Striker class.

So happy to see you watching the How to Train your dragon series!! Have you watched the Kung Fu Panda series as well? I think outside of Pixar series like Cars or Toy Story, these might not be as well known but they sure have amazing stories!!

There are also a few animated specials that take place immediately after the first movie and then there is an animated series that takes place after that and before the second movie.

Agree that this is one of my favourite animated trilogies! Great work from the voice actors, the animators, everyone else involved in the production! Enjoyed seeing you react to this, and looking forward to you watching the other two films. I am pretty sure you could not post a reaction on KZread to watching them, but really think you might enjoy seeing Heavy Metal, and Wizards. Two great animated films in my opinion!

One of the best things is that Hiccup keeps his Canadian accent instead of taking on the Norse accent. This was intended to speak to kids who grow up in a different country than what their parents did, and thusly end up having different accents.

Probably like many people, I once had a midnight cat with green eyes that, I would swear, was the personification of Toothless. Rama was fantastic, and he was, for many years, my little dragon.

Just before Covid, my family pooled money together and helped me get a wheelchair accessible van, which are MASSIVELY EXPENSIVE - a brand new one is about $75,000... she was, at 13 years old, just under half that. When I named her Toothless, everyone just balked and stared at me. Previous cars were Green and Blue-y.... but I had the PERFECT bumper sticker with Toothless' goofy face peering out from a window, and... as a van with a LOT of features that look scary and complicated, but really aren't, I saw she had a lot going on that people could only see if I let them. She's third-(or fourth?)-hand, so she's been through a lot, and half of her doesn't work properly, the door will open and close when she decides to let me in (or out) .... so it's taken awhile to understand her little nuances and quirks... so the name was far more fitting than I realized at the time. Toothless is, unfortunately, a shade of silver (not at all black, like I wish), but we have an understanding... she gets me where I need to go, and I don't complain (much) when she challenges whether I can get in or out on my own. Every car I've had, has had the personality of a pissed-off scorpion, and the temperament of a raging teenager... so Toothless.... is pretty tame, considering.
